Honorable mention should go to the 41 magnum. It's like the red-headed step child of the revolver world.
Absolutely 💯.
Some folks consider 41 Magnum to be an ideal carry caliber. I have been looking for a CZ/DW revolver in 41 Magnum!
In my view I think the .41 is still hanging on by a ROPE instead of a thread and has a small but better position on the market than all the calibers listed in the video. Just speaking from my view and what I see within my area. Okay?
There are still older folks and folks out there who still has .41 mag revolvers. They might not shoot their .41 every time they go to the range or outside on their large property or whatever. They might shoot a box once a year or once after x amount of years, buy one box per year or something. Sometimes when you're in the rural area, country side or deep country side it feels kind of special to carry something else instead of the meta calibers.
They been saying 41 magnum is disappearing for 40 years now
I wouldn't put the .41 mag in that category. After all, revolvers are still being made and lever action rifles are still being made in that caliber.
The .460 Rowland is what I blame the decline of.45 win mag on. You can get the low end of win mag performance without a massive wildey/grizzly sized gun
the real problem with 45 win mag is cartridge length.
Yes, grips are way too big on pistols and if you want a revolver there are better choices you can make. Unfortunately I think this one is getting its well deserved death. 😢
Still makes me a bit sad considering all the work that these things take.
Great comeback video. I don't have any of these but considered 480 Ruger, I am glad you are good enough to keep the channel going. Thanks a lot for the work you put into it
Good to see you are back on! The .480 is my favorite! I received my starline brass ordered 2 years ago about a month ago. Long live the 480 Ruger!!!
My 100lb wife managed my 480 ruger no problem. Glad i saved all my brass when it was only $1.00 per.
@@marksample6230 Woman shooting big bore is awesome! You have a badass wife, sir!
For some reason, I stopped watching the development of new cartridges when I gave up my FFL and pulled the LE Pin in 1993. In 95 the Fed sued me into bankruptcy over an FMHA home loan that they put on hold for two years as my disability claim went through, then demanded full payment. I ended up moving and selling all that was left of my gun collection for enough money to buy a cheap fixer up home in my old home town. Now, with nothing to do but watch videos, I am catching up on what I missed in the last few years. Cancer took all my energy but I guess I won because the cancer is gone and I am still here after a long hospital stay and some major surgery removing damaged organs. So here I am being re educated, thanks for the info.
@JerryEricsson I'm really glad you beat the cancer, my friend. It's a terrible disease, and it's awful what it does to people. I wear a "F*ck Cancer" wrist band to support those suffering and those those we've lost. Thank you for watching, and I hope you're enjoying the content.
Hang in there brother God hasn't kept you alive for no reason. You may be the idea man for a New big bores caliber!
The 475 linebaugh was developed because there was a shortage of 348 winchester brass (the perent case of the 500 linebaugh). It's a cut down 45-70 case. Because of this there will never be a long term shortage of brass for the 480 ruger.
500 Wyoming brass can be formed by swaging a belt onto a .50 AE case - it's actually a fairly simple process, less trouble than trimming cases in my opinion. I spoke to someone at Freedom Arms yesterday about the 500WE for 15 minutes or so, and he explained that brass producers are pretty well backlogged out since COVID, but as soon as they can get a slot, there will be more 500WE brass.
In any case, since my need was for a packable backcountry revolver, he recommended the 475 Linebaugh for the time being.
I have a Ruger Redhawk Alaskan in .480 Ruger. It's a chest carried handful of solid confidence. No matter the situation, the solution is at hand.
Glad to see you back, the 414 SuperMag is one I miss, the 41mag is still hanging on, but not sure if it will still be around in two or three years.
Nice list. I would put the 460 Rowland over a few of these. Glad to see you put out new content. You are the reason I own a BFR in 500 JRH.
I'm glad your back bro
Thanks for the video.
As a resident of Wyoming, I hate to see anything named "Wyoming" going extinct.
I don't have anything in big bore beyond a cap-and-ball revolver, and I can't find percussion caps to shoot that. With people deciding that the 10mm is adequate for bear defense, some of the practical market for other big bore handguns has diminished. What we have now is good enough for handgun hunting for most people. As the world falls apart, people don't feel that they can put resources into some of these great inventions just because these inventions are cool.
Of these, the .480 Ruger is the only one I could imagine ever buying, and I'm still not in a position to do that.
Ever been to Kemmerer? I @$&ing hate Wyoming
Welcome back! You just made my whole week better!!
Thanks for another great video. Glad to see you back.
Glad to see you back at it.
Excellent comeback.
Glad I have my 454 Casull Ruger Toklat!😂
Glad to see you back!
Was going to sub, noticed I was already, so yeah, must've been a while - haha! 🙂
My 2c: Thank you for introducing me to the .40 Super. As irony has it, I remember myself thinking: "If a .40 was necked down to create a great 9mm round, why did no one neck down a .45 to .40/10mm?"... Welp, someone had! The part about "beating guns to death" though, made me think twice about getting a conversion kit... and the line made me chuckle, too must admit.
Nice vid, thank you. And loved the Critical Drinker reference with the "unknown virus" meme 🙂 Have a good one!
Welcome back buddy! Good to see a video from you. I've seen 480 Ruger ammo at gun shows; folks generally seem to be wanting anywhere from 60-90 bucks a box. GunBroker listings are often double that, though I don't know if any are selling at that price. Honestly, the existence of the round has always puzzled me a bit. I think it's greatest strength was that it was an over-45-caliber round that could be had in factory-production double action revolvers of overall 44 magnum size.
Hey hey, glad you're still around man!
*nervously looks down at the Glock 39 in .45 GAP strapped to my hip and then watches video* ... w00t! I'm still on the board!
I forgot about the GAP
Hipster autoloader glock round.
Im a huge fan of the 480 ruger.
I have had great success by finding the ammo at gun shows.
What are you paying at gun shows? I've seen some at shows where I live and it was close enough to 475 Linebaugh prices to basically call it the same.
@@EdTomBel
I am finding it between a dollar and a dollar and a half.
Great! My favorite gun channel is back!
Agreed, man. Just like the 41 Rem Mag, the 480 Ruger is a complete Goldilocks Cartridge that will fade to obscurity due to poor marketing, options, and being overshadowed by larger cartridges
It's about time 🎉🎉🎉
A valid well thought out list and ranking.
Brother, I'm glad you are back. I know life can be busy. Just keep going brother. Love this video. I love big bore cartridges. The only cartridge I can be able to afford is 45 Colt right now since my divorce. So, I'll hold on to that.
Nice to see you post again.
If it's belted, you know it's going to be a good time. Well, not for me. I'm too brittle to shoot some of those things. But I can absolutely see being a bit miffed that your multi-thousand dollar revolver is little more than a safe queen because there's literally no brass on the planet available for it, except for the few fellows who were able to hoard a bit for reloading. And you know darn well they're holding on to it as if each case was a 5 pound bar of platinum.
Anywho, welcome back. It's been a while. Glad to see you're still kicking.
Loved this video iv always been a big bore handgun hunter. In my older. Age iv settled down to the 45 mag . But still like the noise and violence of a true hand cannon. Occasionally
Holy fuck you're still alive! I've been sick for the last week and this really helps.
@MaxwellMeade - Hlad the video is helping. More to come soon! Just getting back into the swing of things.
Double tap started making 480 again
I was waiting with Midway for 480 brass. Got notice was gone before I could order. Luckily I bought 200 cases when I got the gun.
Good to see you back, bud!
The Possum guy used moon clips in a Ruger 45 lc/45 ACP to use the 45 WinMag.
Hi Sean, yes I loved the 480 Ruger in the Taurus Raging Bull. Rellaced it with a Magnum research BFR. Btw my Ruger New Model B hawk 6.5" in 41 magnum, shoots a 260gr hard cast at 1607 fps. No need for the 429 DE.
Great video and your choices are spot on.
First time viewer love this deep dive. Subscribed.
I’ve been chewing in FA’s ear for a few years now. Ended up purchasing a BFR in 500 NRH, to fill the void. But, it’s not a FA. Once you get the grip frame of a FA, it’s hard to go back. Yes, I’ve been bitten by the bug. If brass ever becomes available again, I will be the first one signing up for a model 83.
Sala: "I'm so pleased you're not dead!"
I tentatively subscribed. But once I saw the unspecified from unspecified origin insert, I was convinced I made a good choice. 😄😄
I believe if it hadn’t been for the Movie Dirty Harry the 41 magnum would have outdone the 44 mag.
I’ve read about 90% of the power and 60% of the recoil.
I’ve owned one or another 41 mag since about 1972.
YEAH!!! MY FAVORITE CHANNEL UPLOADED!!! 🥳🥳🥳🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great video!! Thank you👍🏼🤙🏽
Any cartridge that is not easy to get is in danger of becoming obsolete! Go to a big box store like Cabela's, Bass Pro, Sheels, Sports Academy, what ever is on the shelves, is safe. Whatever is not on the shelves, is at risk.
Nice to see you, man.
Great video! 👍🏻
Thanks for such a cool video!! It is well worth the time spent watching it!!!
Can't say I have ever shot a 454, I have shot the 460 S&W. I recently bought a 10mm, and I am enjoying the heavier recoil than a 9mm. I was disappointed at first because I was expecting 44 mag recoil. The reason these cartridges are dieing is because other cartridges are moor powerful and moor plentiful.
The only thing that could SAVE the 480 Ruger 475 Linebaugh is the "48" SPECIAL!
With a 420 grain hard cast at 1000 fps, its still more powerful than a 44 magnum yet milder recoil & SOUND!
Yep, ya gotta make your own 48 SPECIAL AMMO!
IT'S WORTH THE TIME!
About as obscure as a .41 Special.
How about 475 Wildey Magnum?
That is to my knowledge not sammi certified, so I don't think it would really count because that cartridge is and has always been proprietary.
Howdy stranger! I was just about to order some .460 mag ammo. It's fate
From where friend? My website just ran out temporarily
The 480 Ruger is the one on this list that makes me the most upset. It absolutely makes the most sense when hunting in Bear country
A down loaded 475 linebaugh in a gun that could just be bored for 475 makes sense?
@@logangodofcandy in that very niche concept. It is a revolver that can be handled by more shooters... is it good bear round.
I have the Alaska 480, and it’s just like no other, cheers 🍻
@@logangodofcandy I think the cylinder is too short.
Welcome back sean, bigger and badder than ever. Thoughts on a 10" 50 beowulf AR pistol? And yes I do plan to shoot it pistol style
Nice article. I am familiar with all the rounds listed and can also add a few more. It’s a shame rounds like this fade into obscurity, but you can’t escape the law of supply and demand.
I personally like the 480 Ruger and the 429 DE. I hope the 41 Magnum doesn’t join this list. It seems to have small active group of followers keeping it alive.
👍 great video
The 500 Wyoming Express is a fine round that makes it even hotter than the 500 JRH. Although you can load the 500 JRH up to 500 Wyoming Express velocities.
The .500 WE has a pressure limit of 50,000 psi. The .500 S&W magnum has a pressure limit of 60,000 psi. Since the .500 JRH is a shortened .500 S&W magnum, it too has a pressure limit of 60,000 psi. So the JRH is more powerful than the WE. The ballistics of the factory loaded cartridges of each, bear this out.
The .445 supermag, .414 supermag, 45 GAP, and the .50GI also fall into this category, just to name a few.
While it may not help since the brass is impossible to find, I wonder if 300 H&H magnum could be used for 500 WE? I have an old 721 Remington in 300 and a few split neck cases that can't be trimmed anymore. We are talking 50+ YO brass, but it appears the rims are smaller in diameter, but not much. May have to take further measurements to see
New and upcoming - I got a BFR in 444 marlin and it’s great
A friend of mines brother made a few batches of .429 out of 50AE brass. It worked but he had trouble with brass during manufacture and would have uneven crimping on some too and it ended up trashing more casings than it was worth.
Would love to see you do a video on favorite scifi guns! Maybe start with the M41A pulse rifle!
@stevenmeza468 - I'll see what I can do. The pulse rifle us my FAVORITE sci-fi gun!
@@GoBigBoreOrGoHome Might I recommend the WSTE-M5 shotgun from Marathon 2: Durandal? Imagine if the Winchester shotgun from terminator 2, but instead of working the action. The lever acted as a dynamo to power a teleporter that puts fresh shells directly into the chamber, cause thats how its theorized to work! Or if that doesn't float your boat try the Graviton Beam Emitter from BLAME! That gun is basically a simple Glock... chambered in *death star laser* can't get much bigger bore than that!
So many new cartridges are introduced to solve a problem that generally doesn't exist. The difficulty is reaching critical mass where enough manufacturers produce firearms in the caliber and enough ammunition is produced to make the costs reasonable. Unless some sort of trend begins where that caliber becomes "fashionable" then regardless of its merits it will always struggle. There will always be a few diehard fans beavering away at their benches to reload their pet cartridge, but the reality is most will just stick with the old standards where ammo is available everywhere and at relatively low prices. I always had soft spot for the Ruger 480 on paper, but never bought any thing in that caliber for the reasons already stated.
I have two 500 linebaugh rddhawks. I mt hinestly upsets me that the wyoming express is having so much difficulty. Id love to get a model 83 in that cartridge.
Since you're back, I wonder if you've heard about another channel that has recently popped up. The recreational sniper. He's done a series of videos on a light-for-caliber 454 hitting crazy velocities. Might be fun to check out.
Hate to see these fade. I used to have a Wildey .45 Win mag. Never did get a Grizzly.😢 These are all fascinating cartridges.
I can’t figure out why the 41 cal never really became more popular than it was.
Fine video.
I think you're spot-on except for the 45 Win Mag too many people shoot it still. I don't think that's going anywhere anytime soon. And with the 429 Desert Eagle. I will personally asked Justin Moon being I am part of the rod of iron Ministries. I will get back to you on that being I will get that right from the horse's mouth. Other than that I think you're spot on.👍👍
Great channel. Ruger 480 is out in trickles only or pay $99 for 20 high power lower grain rnds from Buffalo Bore. It's getting to be like the 450 Marlin Rifle round which is non existant. Starliner brass is available allegedly not sure.
I consider myself fairly knowledgeable on firearms but have to admit that the .480 Ruger is the only one in this list I recall ever having even heard of, before. When 'gun nerds' haven't even heard of it I guess it is pretty obscure.
I'd love a chance to fire each and every one of them. For me, though, the .44 Magnum is probably about as big as I would ever, really own in a handgun. I live in East Tennessee so there really isn't anything around here I can't drop with a .44 Mag (either out of a revolver or lever action pcc) and .44 Mag ammo is plenty expensive for my tastes theae day. Heck, for that matter .357 Mag anmo isn't cheap!
sean ... how come your merch store has nothing with 45 colt - the original big bore ?
I was totally ignorant of most of the calibers/cartridges on your list. The video was put together well. Had heard of the .480 Ruger and the .45 Win. Mag. Not surprised really that the cartridges/guns in the video are not selling / not popular, especially with so many semi-auto fans out there. The human wrist and hand/fingers (and our eardrums) are not made of steel and rubber. Shooting hand cannons is not enjoyable. If I lived in a big bear area, I might get another .45 Colt, but my go to gun is my .38 special S & W 4inch M & P.. It is pleasant to shoot, and I have some grocery money left over after buying a box of ammo. 😉
I bought a Ruger Blackhawk (Convertible) with cylinders for.45 LC and .45 A.C.P. in 1974. Traded it for a .22 in the late 1980's. Ammo was very expensive for the .45 Colt. The .45 A.C.P. did horrible in the Blackhawk accuracy wise. {Two different bullet sizes, .454 and the A.C.P. is .452 (or .451) which nobody had told me about before I spent the money.
I cannot argue anything you said. The cartridges you listed are near death. Economic downturns never help scarcity. Manufacturers want to sell what sells, and lots of it. That is a big part of basic business. If the economy does not improve, look for everything in big bores beyond 45LC and 44mag to dry up. I do not like it, but just being honest. I always thought the 357Maximum was a cartridge that SHOULD have caught on and been very popular, but it never did. Does anyone make firearms chambered in that cartridge? I know a few people that have had lever actions reworked for it, but that is niche thing.
Well, even 44 mag, 45 colt, and 500 mag don't really sell
@@logangodofcandy The 500 is in its own world. It has never been popular. The 44mag and 45LC are extremely popular among revolver guys. Most people shoot 44SPL an in their 44mags, and the 45LC guys mainly shoot the popper loadings for the old firearms, going about 900fps. Those are very effective for most applications. However, other than military cartridges / calibers, all ammo is going to dwindle. Current times are only going to get worse, for everything.
None of these were ever very popular to begin with. But that's just the nature of big bores.
Sometimes ammo makers make calibers that will never become popular. Usually because of the recoil and cost of the proprietary cartridge. And now the .21 rimfire that is rather pointless considering all the other fine rimfire rounds that are already available. When you look at all the hunting rifle cartridges that exist with 3 decimal chambers, you have to wonder what marketing strategy was used to create them. Original black powder cartridges (30-30, 45-70,50-70, 577) were all that were needed for any big game that was hunted back in the day.
RIP Paul
I’m a huge fan of the 480, so perhaps I’m a bit biased. I think the 45 win mag 40 super will die long before the 480 Ruger. BFR makes a 480, and Freedom Arms makes 480 cylinders for the mdl 83. Yes brass was hard to come by, but Starline is producing brass. Also brass lasts a long time. I’ve been shooting the 480 since it was introduced and am still using my original Hornady brass with some cases loaded over 20 times. I have over 5000 rounds through my 480.
The biggest limitation of the 480 is component bullets. You pretty much have to cast for it if you want to feed it. But that’s not a problem as every factory and custom. Old I’ve tried from 275-460 gr has been extremely accurate once you work up a load.
The 480 is exactly how you describe it, more power than the 44 mag (30% more area and bullet weight) but recoil is in the same ballpark as the 44 mag. I’ve shot plenty of 454’s, 475’s and 500’s and they have next level recoil
Missouri Bullet Co, Montana Bullet Works, Montana Bullet Supply (upon request), Acme Bullet Co, Matt's Bullets, Badman Bullets, Bengal Bullets, Hunters Supply, Western Bullet Co, and Jae-Bok Young all have cast bullets for .480/.475.
There's probably a lot more but that's what I could find.
Can't find the guns anymore. I want the ruger Redhawk 454 but nowhere to be found.
That's a funny way of saying 460s&w
I think Sig should have gone with 10. Would have made a nice fit in the 220 double stack they made for a while. The 10 week is now all the rage with kids these days. 🤤
As a huge fan of the 357 Sig, the 400 Corbon appealed to me, but nobody is making decent barrels (SARCO for $75, really?), but this 40 Super...I want to try that.
It's great to see you again
I haven't owned any of the gosh awful whizz bang cartridges you mentioned. I have owned a couple 500 S&W mags, a couple S&W 460 mags, and a couple 454 Casull. I still own a Taurus Raging Hunter in 454 Casull but only shoot 45 Colt in it. In the proper gun the 45 Colt can be loaded up as hot or hotter than the 44 mag with a larger bullet. Hard to stop the kinetic energy of a 265 gr hard cast .452 bullet over a hefty load of magnum powder. Back in the day of the beginning of the 45 Colt it was black powder pushing a 250 gr bullet around 900 fps. The army reported it would shoot clean thru an indian pony at 100 yards. I think I'll be ok. ;-)
255gr doing 1050 fps to be exact. The military soldier complained about this so they backed it down. It was designed to stop cavalry horses. And it did.
Wondering about the 41 mag?
sounds like i need to stock up on 45 win mag, for my converted m1-carbine.
Sadly, I don't even see a .357 Sig in the Sig catalog....
alot of law enforcement and Federal agencies are dumping the 357 sig and the 40.
Off topic guys.
"The 45 GAP". Don't forget about that thing.
I’ve always said “you don’t need anything more powerful than a full power 44mag!”’ In a handgun. 🤷♂️
I'd rather have a carbine at that point
Looking for load data for 480 ruger would you recommend .476 dia cast or stick with.475
I loved my 480 ruger but I have to say, I like my 500 jrh more.
6shot would be the advantage. But ammo capacity in these big thumpers isn't prioritized in most cases.
@exothermal.sprocket
If you can't get it done with 5 shots, the 6th probably won't do you any good either.
The 45/45 Redhawk comes chambered for 45 win mag 😺
.357 Maximum, .41 Magnum, .357 Sig...
Only one of those is a big bore
If you're a mouse, they're all cannons.
@@exothermal.sprocket That is true, but big bore has an objective definition that does not take into account the relative size of mice
@@grahamohea2424
With the .500 S&W Mag readily available, I cannot see the .500WE surviving.
I hear you're getting ready for the Big Bore Civil War.
I have never even heard of the .40 Super or the .429 DE.
Desert eagle comes in 44 magnum, but it cycles like crap, so they necked down the 50ae to take 44 bullets and uses the same 50ae magazines.
I could never see the sense in any of these super high powered handgun cartridges.
Ok ok, I'm an old school dinosaur who's philosophy is, if you need more gun than a full power 357 or a semi-hot 45LC, that's what a rifle is for! To be fair, though, I've always had an affection for the 41 Magnum, and I've owned an loved a few 44 Mags betimes. I consider anything more as downright stupid.
JMHO.
@3:33 that gun is hideous. It looks like they were going for a sci-fi or futuristic look but botched it.
You forgot the 10mm Magnum
