This news coverage is terrible. It shows first down (spike), another play (run), 4th down (spike), and 5th down (score). Showing 4 plays to demonstrate a team getting 5 downs, then calling a play "2nd down" with some vague reference to the play marker, then saying it's 4th down on the next play... confusing as hell, and just as bad as what the refs did really.
No, it shows a spike on 1st down, 2nd down is a run by Bieniemy to the 1..3rd down is a run by Bieniemy that gets stuffed at the 1 as he is trying to leap over the pile. 4th down is a spike, 5th down is QB keeper
One of those what might have beens. If the downs had been correct, Colorado might still have won. The Buffalos spiked the ball on what was supposed to be fourth down, thinking it was third down. Had the marker been correct Colorado would have probably run a play. That could have resulted in the go ahead score.
@@michaelcole9171 I'll agree it was a very close play but the referee signaled touchdown. Now let's talk about who really cheated before the game, by watering down their fake grass, so Colorado's much faster running backs were constantly slipping in the game. Missouri came out for the game with their foul weather cleats on. I wonder how they knew the field would be so slick?
If Georgia Tech had played CU, they would have been slaughtered. CU's non conference games that year were Tennessee, Stanford, Illinois, Texas and Washington. 2 at home, 2 on the road and 1 at a neutral site. Of course they also had to play Nebraska, Oklahoma and Notre Dame. That year they played 8 teams who were ranked at the time they played them. Of the thirteen games they played, 6 were at home but 7 were away. Maybe one of the toughest schedules anyone has ever played. GT did have a nice win against Virginia that year, oh and against Chattanooga.
You tied Duke! And they went winless that year. Slow your roll Andrew. Sorry for the reply 10 years later, I know that makes me the ultimate Delta Bravo but whaddayagonnado. Have a good day.
Stuff like this, the "clipping penalty" in the Orange Bowl vs. Notre Dame and that Illinois loss are why I think Georgia Tech should've won the title outright.
That clipping penalty was a legitimate foul and Notre Dame would not have scored without the illegal block. It was definitely the correct call. CU played 7 ranked teams, and 3 top 10 teams in 1990 (the most ranked opponents and top 10 opponents) of any team in the nation, and only lost 1 game. They were undefeated against top 10 teams. They were head and shoulders the better team over Georgia Tech. It wasn't even close. Georgia Tech did not deserve even a split championship. The only reason Georgia Tech won the Coaches Poll is because Tom Osborne refused to vote for CU at all - not even in the top 25. He was a complete ass who lacked any sportsmanship. He voted his own team #1 and Georgia Tech #2 - even though Georgia Tech beat his team in the Citrus Bowl. That's why the coaches poll is a complete joke.
@@thecatsfan Despite the fifth down I think Colorado should have won the title outright. That year, they faced FOUR conference champions that year. How could you possibly change the outcome of the game, without replaying the game? Colorado thinking it was 3rd down when it was really 4th down, downed the ball to stop the clock and talk about it. Colorado would not have done that unless they thought it was 3rd down. On fifth down Missouri was lined up ready to play also thinking it was 4th down. I get so tired of everyone claiming CU stole that game. If there was a crime committed that day, it was made by that artificial turf in Missouri. CU players slipped running with the ball over 30. Was that a football field or an ice skating area? CU would have scored a lot more points if not for that evil turf.

Some CU players said they knew it was 5th down, but the refs lined the ball up for another down
I'm surprised the outcome of this game was not changed as long as a protest was filed.
Why is it called fifth down?
Because the Buffs scored the winning TD on 5th down: resulting from the downmarker, while on 2nd down, never getting changed.
