This was filmed during the pandemic, each of the lads in his own home. Home Free kept many people sane during the lockdowns! You might enjoy The Butts Remix. That one's right up your street, methinks.
How good are these guys? The fun & energy in this is infectious. This was done during quarantine so none of the guys were even together. The editing of this was great & was done in the Tik Tok style. Love all the guys parts, with Tim's rumbling bass underlying it all. And Adam's beatboxing is phenomenal as always including sea swells & castanets. Amazing how he increased the tempo from one song to another.
Adam Rupp is a world class beat boxer/vocal percussionist. What you hear is him. He is always adding new elements to his repertoire. I love the way he ups the tempo for each segment. He's driving this song with authority. I also love the wave sounds and castanets he's doing. You ought to check out Adam Rupp drum solo from 2015 (red plaid shirt). It showcases his insane raw talent and skills the most clearly. There are later videos of his solos that are even more astounding, but that one is the best to see how skilled he is. These guys can deliver a song like no one else. You don't just hear their music, you feel it.
If your interested in sea shanties. you should listen too "Fisherman's Friends" they are an acapella group from Cornwall UK. And one of the best groups around😁👍
Sea shanties were work songs, devised to accompany particular actions or tasks on board ship. They could help keep time among groups of sailors, coordinate physical movements like hauling ropes and raising sails, and relieve the boredom of long, repetitive tasks.
To me the best song to hear them individually is American Pie featuring Don McLean, Don enjoyed it so much he invited them when he got his star on the Hollywood walk of fame.
I’m a Norfolk girl and every year with have Shanties groups singing on the quay ( we used to be one of the biggest fishing fleets on the north coast) we also have Viking weekends with torches burning and pulling a Viking ship on the beach and then set it a light!
The fisherman’s friends from port Issac in Cornwall are a great listen for sea shanties and folk tunes, all still working fishermen and think the average age is around 60 😊
Original sound of sea shanties is Fishermans Friend from the south. Fisherman's Friends are also a lozenge made in Fleetwood lancs NW which were originally for fishermen. Great for coughs.
Peace to you too nrother ! ☮☮☮ These guys are THE REAL DEAL....yeah they lean country but they sing EVERY GENRE !!! Multi-talented....they not only sing, they also are songwriters and several of them can also (and have) directed their own videos - please do a lot more Home Free reactions...Love seeing people discover the insane talent they have....don't forget to spread the word about them too !!
Chance (first singer) was into shanties on TikTok and brought the idea to the boys. Who knew I liked shanties??? This is so good and this was done during Covid so they weren’t even together. Did you hear Adam (beatboxer) doing castanets in the last song?! Amazing. If you like harmonies, try Helplessly Hoping, Brothers in Arms, In the Blood, One Man Band, Die a Happy Man, The Driver. There are so many good songs. They also have lots of originals, Dive Bar Saints, Road Sweet Road, So Long Dixie (with guitar). They’re immensely talented. Good reaction and I subscribed. 😄
Sea shanties are (mostly) work songs that were common on sailing ships before the invention of steam engines, to make sure everyone was working together in rhythm, and not tripping over each others' feet. So they all tend to have strong beats They shifted to pop music in the 1960s folk music revival. There are music festivals dedicated to just sea shanties and similar songs around the world, and folk music bands who make sea shanties the bulk of their material (they're just not on the radio). If you really want to learn more about this genre of song (more traditional/historical than pop), I suggest checking out Seán Dagher's channel on RUclips -- he has a whole series teaching the history of songs, and then performs them, harmonizing with himself. "The Wellerman" trend started with a shanty band called "The Longest Johns" -- an indie group out of Bristol, England, who sang it while playing a pirate-themed video game on Twitch (they lean more toward the pop side, and tend to get silly; they upload a video to RUclips every Wednesday) .
Loved your reaction, mirrored the looks Home Fries get every time we listen to Home Free, amazement, awe and love. Now, it's time for their "Butts Medley". Thanks so much for the joy!
I see a bearded Home Fry in the making!!😜 I'm so glad you're enjoying Home Free! They have an awesome catalog with 200+ songs/videos to choose from in many different genres. Some are covers, some originals, but no matter which you choose....you won't find a bad one!
For something entirely different and to show how supremely talented Rob and Austin are, check out their cover of Nessun Dorma. It is beautiful. They rival Pavoritti.
So glad you liked this. These guys can be fun, serious and patriotic. Suggestions Moonshine, Hillbilly Bone, Listen to the Music, 7 Bridges Road, for songs all Harmonies no beat boxing try Helplessly Hoping, How Great Thou Art, and Go Rest High On That Mountain ( church version) very much enjoying your reactions keep them coming
My husband is active duty in the USCG and let's just say we are a "seafaring" family. So I love sea shanties! But I love Home Free more. So much talent, humor, and they're always interesting. That's my favorite thing. They are never ever boring. They are always putting out stuff that is fun to analyze and stuff where if you hear it multiple times, there's always something new to notice. Anyway, thanks for your reaction to them. Keep at it. The Home Fries will flock to your channel, if they haven't already. :)
You may want to check out The Lounge Kittens, they were a 3 part harmony cover band with a lounge twist (with a keyboard, so not quite all acapella and one song they tried adding a band, but still the harmonising) they had a good sense of humour too, they decided to call it a day just before covid and all that stuff happened
You have a huge library of Home Free videos to choose from. And that's NOT including their Home Away From Home, From the Vault, and Home Free Eats videos. A lot of Home Free videos are bits of their live concerts film by audience members. That means that there may be several versions of a live song, that are all slightly different because they're from different shows/different crowds. The many versions of both Your Man and Guilty Pleasure are good examples, and well worth hunting down the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th versions. My favorite rendition of Your Man starts at 7:23 of the 27 minutes long video Home Free Concert Morrison, IL 8/19/15. But I want to recommend live bits that show the guys interacting with their fans, so start that video at 6:52. (Of course, watch the whole thing later, right?) Home Free Falls is parts of an outdoor gig where Tim's pre-show schtick went a bit wrong and the guys wouldn't let him forget it. And then there Home Free Kearney, MO How Great Thou Art 6.17.2017. The concert got cancelled after 3 songs by a serious rain/lightning storm. The ended up in a tent, trying to wait it out, then decided to do one song for the remaining fans before leaving. There are several different versions, taken from different angles amongst the fans. A beautiful rendition.
They do this during their concerts, ie, parties. The crowd goes nuts, singing, stomping, clapping! We were part of a live stream when they did this in December in Mankato! We lost it then!
Home Free are like a burst of warm sunshine; ridiculously talented, and with a wonderfully goofy sense of humour, which you saw a hint of here. Austin and Tim often try to out-roleplay each other - Austin usually wins, by way of turning the Ham up to 11. (They did a cover of Rick Astley's 'Never Gonna give You Up,' in full-on eighties style get-up - it sounds great as well as being hilarious to watch, and Austin is a sight to behold in that one!)
It's very catchy, isn't it? I hadn't heard all these songs, but after listening a couple of times, I'm singing right along. If you notice the guys are in the boxes, it means the songs were recorded during Covid quarantine. They kept busy.
They all can sing a good lead, and the beatboxer sings, not usually lead, but solo parts and harmonizes in 5-part harmony also when he's not beatboxing too. They have a lot of videos, please go down the rabbit hole, I'm all for watching your reactions to Home Free.
Hi my friend home free are absolutely amazing and some fantastic songs a young gentleman taking RUclips by storm is ren -hi ren this video has had 3 million views in 2 weeks and it is pure genius worth a look many thanks love and respect from the UK 👍👍👍👍👍👍🌟😀😀 amazing channel 👍
I love all the guys in this. Really enjoy the way the last verse of most of their mashups is seamlessly put together. Great arrangement. Love Chance in this.
The whole sea shanty craze is so weird, since I grew up on the ocean, in a fishing/sailing community in the North Atlantic. Most of these are from my childhood. We sang the less safe for work versions though, haha. Since we're at the crossroads of Canada/U.S/Europe we probably have our version of every shanty known to men. If you'd like to check out the Newfoundland and Labrador) shanties there's Heave Away by the Fables (it's gotten super popular in sports right now because it was used for the Canadian goal music for the World Juniors). We also have Barrett's Privateers by the Irish Descendants, which is a more dark look at privateering/pirating in North America. if you're super adventurous and don't mind a dance beat behind traditional music, you should also check out Peter Street by The Celtic Connection. The story is hilarious. As is the song The Night that Paddy Murphy died by Great Big Sea. It's the music we play when everyone's half cut at a house party and we're in the mood to dance and raise glasses to each other.
Maybe one of the reasons I like this one so much is being partial to melodies in the baritone range. There's a fullness and richness to the sound of all their voices together that I love. Recommend their Helplessly Hoping cover. Very short, but to me like pure vocal dark chocolate. Also their version of Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues. It's pretty cool. Shoot, the list is just too long!
Someone at Ubisoft heard this and asked them to write an original sea shanty for their new game, Skull and Bones. Chance, who started the song, wrote and took the lead on that one. There is a full version lyric video and a shorter live performance from the gaming conference where they introduced the game. They are both on RUclips.
There's a great song called, Children go where I send Thee that they sing with Kenny Rogers. Austin does a cool guitar sound, along with Adam's drum kit sounds. It's excellent!
You are in for some amazing music from these guys. They can go from a soulful rendition of a Man Loves a Woman, to a fun romp through a mix of Alabama, , the Thong Song, and Honky tonk bedonkeydonk, plus a few others in their Butts Medley. You will be blown away with their Christmas music as well as their gospel songs. Have fun.
My two favourite vocal groups are home free and voice play, for voice play I would recommend ologies boogie song, hoist the colours and my mother told me 👍.
They even did a great rendition of Never gonna Give You Up! Yeah, no Rick Rollin you with that. And Tim showing moves you never expect from him to boot.
A great idea from Chance who likes a lot of those Sea shanty songs and in my opinion really has the voice and appearance for them. It is made in quarantine period. Besides each having their great part in this medley, I really love the beatboxing with castanets sound! It was done in the TikTok style, which is why I regularly see / hear come by at the TikTok videos
You have only just begun down this rabbit hole. I love Pentatonix and voice play, but Home Free takes the cake. They are just a different breed of acapella. Just subscribed to your channel. 😁😁😁😁
For more sea shanties, look up the four album set "Rogue's Gallery - Pirate Ballard's, Sea Songs & Chanties". An amazing production (funded by Johnny Depp) and featuring a host of artists doing their interpretations of this sort of music. From big names like Bono, Loudin Wainwright III & Iggy Pop to folk favourites like Richard Thompson and Martin Carthy to weird experimental groups and singers I'd never heard of. ((Just watch out as some tracks such as The Good Ship Venus are done as seafarers would have sung them - very rude and crude...))
Hi. Loved your reaction. As we said before, HF's quarantine videos are the best. All their songs (starting 2014) are on my playlist. Coming back for your next HF adventure.
Thank you ECB, Iv'e loved Sea Shanty's all my life, and i'm almost 80 now. Thanks again old mate. P.S. iv'e been singin, mumblein What Shall, #2, it seems, since i can remember. Good onya mate.
Great medleyV, Their harmonies were great! Adam Rupp is amazing… Did you hear the castanet sound in the last few shanty? Can’t imagine how I did that! I look forward to your next home free reaction
I'm convinced Adam Rupp swallowed a bunch of instruments, no one can change my mind 😂🤣 Love these boys so much!! 😍 I loved their cover "all about that bass" more than the original
They don't use instruments on the songs with just the 5 of them. I guess their use of the guitar as percussion on this song is an exception. They were following the pattern set by that guy on TikTok that did the Wellerman shanty song and pounding on his guitar in a similar manner. So they were trying to follow the trend and make their contribution. Sometimes they use instruments when they collaborate with other groups like their recent song, Givin' Up On You, with Texas Hill. It's generally the other group who has the instruments. For example, they did God Bless The USA on an album with just the 5 of them, but then they did another version with a bunch of military singers and a military band. But when they did a cover of Ring Of Fire with guest Avi Kaplan (bass), they didn't use any instruments because Avi was from Pentatonix, another a capella band.
They are simply the best and enjoy the rabbit hole that is Home Free. I have watched them since their win on The Sing Off and have seen them in person 3 times. I know you are a reaction channel, but I simply will say that I don't do PTX because they don't have the range, the sound and there are too many ego's whereas Home Free doesn't have those issues. To me, there isn't a comparison between the 2....Home Free is the best. So I will watch anything you do that isn't PTX and look forward to you exploring more of Home Free and others. Thanks for the reaction!
Love a good sea shanty, I've played this medley over and over on my tin whistle cos I can't sing. Then did some history on them as sea shanties are like folk songs and even nursery rhymes, they all mean something. The first one 'The Wellerman' is from New Zealand when Whaling was common, the line "Down on her a right Whale bore" means it was the right type of Whale i.e. mature adult, not in calf or with no youngster nursing. The Wellerman was a larger whaling company who would deliver supplies to their smaller independent crew, a bit like a franchise. 'Drunken Sailor' is British (how could you guess 😂) I think most people over here know that one, lots of verses which depicts many ways to punish a drunken sailor which was a no no. 'Leave her Johnny' is also British and quite sad, it's about a young lad who has no home or family but the ship and now she's too old and rotten to be sailing anymore and he doesn't want to leave her because she's all he's got 😭 'Cape Cod' is from the USA when voyages to Australia were with cargo rather than passengers. The line within the chorus "So pull her up my Bully Bully Boys" then "Pull her up and don't you make a noise" was when the companies tried to ban singing on board!! So they sang this 😂 'Santiana' is also from USA when the war between USA and Mexico was on. The term 'Bully Boys' comes from the meat they ate which came in barrels and was like Bully Beef I suppose. What I find fascinating is, the first 'songs' known were Viking songs to help keep timing with the oars so they were slow and methodic, then as ships changed through time the 'beat' got faster as ships got faster which is exactly what these boys have done with their medley, very underlying cleverness 😊
May I suggest you watch HOME FREE singing ELVIRA with the band that sang it originally THE OAK RIDGE BOYS. I would also recommend AMERICAN PIE with Don McLean.
Always love the first shanty, I find it soothing, bit the rest are great too. 😎👌 Would you react to any other singers, even if they aren't British?, If yes, the check out Dimash Qudaibergen, he's 28 year old from Kazakhstan with an astounding singing talent try either a song called Sos or Hello, you won't be disappointed. 👌
Well 3 pirates and 2 longshoremen anyway. Lol. They even created their own HF Tik Tok style logo. I'm still trying to figure out how Adam imitated castanets.
Love this whole medley but my favorite part is Adam (Adam Rupp, freak of nature beatboxer) doing the castanets. Pure talent.
And the sounds of waves crashing on the ship too!
This was filmed during the pandemic, each of the lads in his own home. Home Free kept many people sane during the lockdowns!
You might enjoy The Butts Remix. That one's right up your street, methinks.
Actually, from what I hear, Tim was in someone else's front yard, standing in a rowboat on their lawn. Which is why he never moved from his place.
Just take your pick, they don't have a bad song. Any genre, they nail it. 🤩
My Dad used to sing the drunken sailor when I was a child. Loved this. Thank you. I love the harmonies . 👍👏
We used to sing drunken sailor as kids.
Yes ... in the UK it's almost a nursery rhyme/children's song nowadays

Homefree is the BEST of all acapella groups
Subbed for the a Capella rabbit Hole of Home Free & Voiceplay! This was obviously one of the "quarantine" releases! So many great songs to enjoy!
They are hilarious too. You need to check out their Guilty pleasures video and Story time with Tim.
That was absolutely fantastic defo need to hear more cant wait. Thanks man.
This was brilliant, I knew a few of them. Cannot wait to hear more👍

Their voices are individually excellent. But together with the harmonies their arrangements have - they can't be beat.
Home Free recently put out an official live version of this. It's quite incredible.

awesome. More Home Free & Pentatonix, please.
Very clean and well groomed for pirates😂😂😂
these guys are amazing ❤🏴
Damn dude you are in for a treat. This isn't even a tip of the iceberg
Love this song!
Do more Home Free, please. You won't regret any of their songs.
Drop of Nelson's Blood - (aka Roll the Old Chariot), sung by David Coffin is amazing.
Hope you like this rabbit hole, cause it's really deep:)

Another rabbit hole to fall into... Geoff Castellucci.
Thank you for sharing this. Your reactions are awesome. I love these guys as much as I love Voice Play but for different reasons.
Did you catch the waves crashing against the ship? Adam is incredible!
But when they did a cover of Ring Of Fire with guest Avi Kaplan (bass), they didn't use any instruments because Avi was from Pentatonix, another a capella band.
the harmonics are great.
CK out Can't Stop the Feeling
Taught as kids
Looking forward to Home Free's Butts Remix reaction!
Welcome to the rabbit hole of Home Free! Enjoy!!
Another one who learned Drunken Sailor as a kid. Sang it to my babies with (ahem) slightly altered lyrics... 😉
That verse about putting him into bed...with the captain's daughter🤣
'Leave her Johnny' is also British and quite sad, it's about a young lad who has no home or family but the ship and now she's too old and rotten to be sailing anymore and he doesn't want to leave her because she's all he's got 😭
'Cape Cod' is from the USA when voyages to Australia were with cargo rather than passengers. The line within the chorus "So pull her up my Bully Bully Boys" then "Pull her up and don't you make a noise" was when the companies tried to ban singing on board!! So they sang this 😂
'Santiana' is also from USA when the war between USA and Mexico was on.
Drunken Sailor is actually the oldest, most traditional sea shanty of the group.
May I suggest you watch HOME FREE singing ELVIRA with the band that sang it originally THE OAK RIDGE BOYS. I would also recommend AMERICAN PIE with Don McLean.
EB, Have you ever heard of a 80’s British pop group, The Flying Pickets?
They always sang in
a Capella.
Check out The Fishermans Friends from Cornwall for sea shanties. They are superb. All the best
If you like Shanty's check out the Fishermans Friends from Port Isaac in Cornwall.
Good shout! The Longest Johns from Bristol are another good choice for traditional sea shanties
Watch the movie The Fishermen's Friends about a group of trawlers in Cornwall, England singing sea shanties.
Check out "Fisherman's Friends" for Sea Shanty's
Well 3 pirates and 2 longshoremen anyway. Lol. They even created their own HF Tik Tok style logo.
I'm still trying to figure out how Adam imitated castanets.
