Depends on the purpose of a handneld. There is no activity or little on 220 and 50 mhz in our area. We have radio that cover that too. 2m and 70cm is not even croweded. If you live in New York, Toronto, etc, a different matter.
We use it mostly when we are off grid to communicate with one another, while camping, hiking, fishing, ice fishing, with bluetooth, I can monitor on a bluetooth speaker, etc. We have grandkids and can monitor them.
The ID-52 Plus, is a digital radio, one can use it for DStar either directly to a Dstar Repeater or via Terminal mode using the internet. We had other icom and I must say, it way better than the ID92AD, actually the id92ad was not worth it. The ID-52 screen is fantastic. Better than the TD-H3 or TD-H8, though we use it alot when roughing out.
Despite the price, I prefer the id-52 plus over all the radios that operate on vhf/uhf. I suspect for vhf/uhf receiver, background noise, interference rejection, it a bit better than the IC-705. It has better audio receiving and better mic audio transmitting than the IC-705. It keep surprising me in a positive way, as I use it more often.
LOL, I have no connections to Icom, just telling you what I am experiencing.
The IC-705 covers all hf bands and vhf, uhf. Love it and I use it as my base and portable stations for vhf/uhf. The IC-7300 I use strickly for HF.
I have no need for aprs. I must say the GPS on this unit, provides me location, distances and can be use for foxhunt tracking. Let me knnow how far a repeater is from me. Handy when you need direction in the bush. Though, my iphone does the same.
Unfortunately, prices are going up and up and up, due to world scene. The unit is a great gift to a ham radio operator, if u looking for a great thank-you gift to someone you care. I can recommend this radio.

@ You make a compelling case. I love Icom and of my collection of roughly 30 rigs and 20 HTs, they are my favorites. While my main rig for a decade has been the KW TS990, I have the 7300/9700 twins on the side desk, the 905/705 twins for the field, ID-51 and the 7100 in the faraday pelican case. I am at the age where I won't be making any more major purchases but would've probably sprung for the anniversary edition if I didn't already have the FT-5D and the KW 74. 73 de KI1Y, Cocoa Beach FL.

Nice, we been a advance ham since the seventies, the tube days, converting discarded military radio for ham, heathkit, Yausu units and in the end settle on all sort of icom gear. We did a lot of SSB on 2 and 70cm in VO1 and VE3 land. Slow scan tv, packet radio. Ran our own fm and digipeaters for awhile in VE3 Land.
Per queston regarding use of DStar on Icom 705 and ID-52 Plus, I end up doing a video to answer people question, so, another video on it will come out. I expect it will apply to other brands that use dstar, fusion, dmr, etc. Another ice fishing video will be out later on.
      Keep in touch,
