  • I was asked to put up a couple of side by side comparisons for folks far away. Here's the first one.
Remember to subscribe to this channel and to Daigle Autoharps! I'm doing this all on my phone while I'm away, and can't get to the control buttons to make a subscribe button for Daigle over here on my channel. I hope to rectify that soon! Meantime go search him and subscribe to his channel, you won't regret it. Also, remember my lessons and my patreon: www.halweeks.com for lessons, and / halweeks to help support this channel! Costs money to come here, folks!
This is a video comparing Autoharps side by side.

I'll be saving up for a daigle. But for now the OS will have to do. And the OS will ride in the 18 wheeler and the nicer daigle will live at home. Your videos are the best on RUclips. Thanks.

I've quite enjoyed some of your videos. I play viola and a little piano, with no auto harp experience. But I know the tune you played first, and its been really interesting to hear the contrast in style that a different instrument creates. Each note on the fiddle is very deliberate, and the performer has to use speed and technique to give the impression of chords. The autoharp seems like the reverse- chords are natural and immediate, and the tune arises from the performer's effort. Sometimes it isn't even all there- the music gestures towards the tune and the listener follows.
If I decided to pick up another instrument, the autoharp would be high on the list. Next to the concertina, I think.

Big difference in price. Kinda like comparing a Martin D-28 guitar to a low priced laminated guitar. Hal you can make them all sound great.

I don't think the C-model Schmits sound as good as the older ones, even with new strings. I have a theory that that big ol' heavy string-through tailpiece has something to do with it, but I dunno. They don't seem to "shimmer" as much, and sound kinda flat and featureless.
I have an old B-model Silvertone from the 60s that I put a 21C chord box and new strings on that I really like. Looks to have a spruce top and a spruce plywood back and sides, and lacks a sound hole. The bass isn't as fat as the ones with a sound hole, but it has an airy shimmery tone that I think sounds really good. It's not loud enough to keep up with other instruments without amplification, though. And nobody seems to sell a set of fine tuners that will work with the A and B models.
But I dunno. Maybe I am full of it, lol.

Wow ...yes the luthier one has balanced mids compared to the Oscar Schmidt

Does the sound of new, facotry-made Oscar Schmidts still benefit as much from playing over time or does that hold true more for luthier-made harps? I bought a new OS Americana and it feels heavy, solid, and sealed. I'm afraid it's tone is never going to hold a candle to my 1970s OS-12B. Thanks for the video!

The new ones, alas, will never sound as good as the old ones. They've made too many cuts in the quality to keep up with the price point. Luthier harps are actual wood, not laminate (although d'Aigle makes two laminate models) and they change and ripen like old wine and old violins...just get better and better...provided they are played! So a luthier that's right out of the factory is a little "green" compared to what it will be in a few months, and a year or a decade down the road.

@@wildautoharp Thanks so much. I'm going to do my best to return this new one and convert my old 12-bar into a 21-bar. Many of your videos have been helpful to me!
