Whenever I see this movie, i cry continuously... The innocence of jugal hansraj is really heart touching... The moment when he said 'Sorry Aunty' is breath taking.. After knowing all the truth that his father doesn't want to accept him, he worried for others...
And that song is i think always be no. 1 song in every era.. One line is from that song I like so much "jine k lia socha hi ni, dard sambhalne honge"......... EPIC

Maturity in Rahul's character is uncanny. As I was getting too emotional watching the movie, I checked it thinking if the roles were reversed, Rahul as Indu's illegitimate son. All our emotions would go down the drain. We as a society are hypocrite.

We owned this film on vhs in Karachi Pakistan when me and my brother were children in the 1980’s. We used to watch and enjoy lakri ki Kathi and it was a very popular song amongst the children then. Little that we fully understood this movie back then but I watched it years later and the last scene bring tears of joy to the eye now. What a beautiful emotional film with emotional and happy ending.

Not talking about the movie. It was, is and always will be a masterpiece. How hard I try to control those, tears keep flowing down constantly in many of the scenes.
What surprises me most is that -- even reading the comments and empathising other people's feeling make my eyes wet. Maybe as a father I can relate to the feeling of other dads - don't know for sure.

This is one of the most beautifully made movies ever. The acting, the dialogue, the expressions, the superbly shaded nuances in each performance are exceptional...and the exquisite music and lyrics to the songs just drive that emotional knife that much deeper to the core of you...it breaks your heart into a million pieces each time you watch it. By the time you reach the deeply satisfying end, your eyes are almost too swollen with tears for you to cheer but doesn't matter...your heart can cheer instead!

one of the best movies ever made in Bollywood! seriously, every scene and dialogue in this movie is directed with finesse. i don't think any director in Bollywood would be able to come closer to Shekhar Kapur in terms of direction. also, the brilliant performances of Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi and the child artiste Jugal Hansraj (of course!) elevates this movie to a whole new level. seriously, this movie should have been nominated for the best foreign film for Oscars. it's just a masterpiece!

I get amazed to see the beauty of nature, flowers, colours, emotions, dialogues, music, script. This movie made when I was just 7 years. But saw it first time in 2004. I can say Gulzar saab, Shekhar kapoor, Nasir Uddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Sayed Jafri. All of the character artists are amazing. Maybe one of their best performance of their career. I feel like it is a story that made all of us so humble to each other.

Obviously at that young age, I didn't understand the concept of extra-marital affair or why children born out of wedlock were looked down upon by the society. As an 80s kid I used to enjoy the song lakdi ki kathi a lot. My sister and I would sing it in every family gathering.
The symbolism in the film at many place is really heartwarming. Naseeruddin Shah's guilt when he sees Jugal Hansraj's sketch of his father who he had never seen, wearing glasses. Naseer asks him does your dad wear glasses and the child emphatically says yes. Naseer suddenly realises that he is also wearing glasses and guiltily proceeds to remove them.
Shabana Azmi feels motherly towards the boy and comes to his room to cover him and out of curiosity looks at the photo frame with his mother, returns to her room hurt and feels that she has been replaced by Jugal's mom in her pictures with Naseeruddin shah. Anger and jealousy seizes her as she remembers that Jugal is symbol of her husband's extramarital affair and angrily declares after tossing the boy's bangle box gift, "Le jaao apne bete ko."
Shabana Azmi getting startled in kitchen when the boy suddenly calls her mamaa and then recovering from the shock and declaring coldly, "main mummy nahi hoon" and storming off.
Naseeruddin shah's dejection at not being able to give his son his water bottle and then being pleasantly surprised to see the boy happily squabbling with his half sisters in the car. The relief on his face when his wife smiles at him for the first time in months saying "yahi baithe rahoge ki ghar bhi chaloge". The new family photo in the end with Jugal sitting on Shabana Azmi;s lap. Lovely.🥰
I found the above symbolisms more touching than the melodramatic climax after the boy is found by the police.

This is the most heart touching movie I've ever come across.. such simplicity plus genius acting by the entire cast. Naseruddin Shah melted hearts with that perfect performance and then there was jugal hansraj , who cannot love a child like that ?? The most classic masterpiece. I can watch it for a million times.

I remember watching this movie as a kid and who would think that Urmila Matondkar would become the superstar she is today, all because of this as her first movie in 1983? This movie is from 36 years ago when Urmila was only 9.
