Dhaniram brings a trucker named Gerulal to Jugni's house so that he can rent a room. Jugni lives in dilapidated house with three young daughters, all of whom are of marriage age. The eldest is Mimki, followed by Mithu, and Chinki. Her husband is an alcoholic and wayward, and comes home every few weeks. Jugni past was sordid and involved dancing in a brothel. Jugni and her daughters labor for a living. Gerulal gets settled in, and becomes part of this family. Then when he gets news of his maternal grandmother's passing, he leaves and does not return for several months. When he returns, nothing and no one is the same anymore.

Such miserable sad ending. Can't a poor , humble person aspire a little happiness , a little joy in his life ? Are they born to suffer and lead lives of destitution, deprivation and sufferings ? Gulzar sahab should not have been so pessimistic in writing this story.

ये वो कुछ चुनिंदा फिल्मों में से है जिसने अपनी छाप लोगो के दिलो पर छोड़ी है। ये वाकई उस वक़्त की खुसनसीबी ही है जिसमे इतने जबर्दस्त कलाकार थे जिन्होंने अपनी कला से इस कहानी को अमर कर दिया। आज के दौर में शायद ये संभव नहीं है।

This is one of the best movie ,i have ever seen , what a marvelous story ,the direction ,the acting was so perfect .Hats off to Sanjeev Kumar - He was a true gem to Indian Film ,and was and still is so underappreciated ,his acting is so effortless ,so genuine so true that we can never separate his character from him - his acting,his work personifies him and though he is no longer with us ,he is alive with his work .He is phenomenal .and Gulzar sahab is again a legend ,a giant in the world of art .and the writer -Samaresh Banu ,How can someone write qnd portray something that is so sensitive ,so real and at the same time so sad ,This is a real movie .I can never forget this movie .
Yadav jee. You have expressed so eloquently and nicely that I feel my language would be inadequate to say anything more. In fact this movie is so genuine and true that you feel it in your heart and it lingers in your mind for days together. In my opinion if the films, the characters playing in it and and it's sincere presentation by the artists go out of your mind within a couple of hours or just a few days after you have observed , then the film is not worth to spend our time with. Yadav saab, I wish I had read your beautiful narrative earlier. A good presentation of a good creation of art make me feel very clean and honest. An art like film, of course leave you very sorrowful at times. Like this film would.

First time dekhi aur ab roj mdekhunga
It is difficult to visualize a film like this can ever be made again. It doesn't have a compelling story that could be noticeable in an advancing plot, yet it has a powerful, poignant theme that held me hostage for its entire length. I am not sure how history will bear me out, but not everything always gets recorded in the history books. Also, perhaps, Gulzar Saheb, Sanjeev Kumar, Sharmila Tagore, Shabana Azmi, and Waheeda Rehman will not be reborn. I have already watched it twice in three years and am quite certain I will do it another time, when the heart will have its reasons to shed a tear or two.
निशब्द हूं, यह केवल फिल्म नहीं है हमारे समाज का आइना भी है।हर इंसान को अपनी जिमेदारियों को पूरा करते हुए समाज के कमजोर लोगों के लिए भी कुछ करने की कोशिश करनी चाहिए।।
I saw this almost 40 years back. I was mesmerised by this amazing masterpiece. that was way ahead of its time. In hollywood it would have deserved an Oscar.

Sanjeev Kumar was one of the greatest actors ever in Hindi film industry. He is right at the top with likes of Amitabh and Dilip Kumar but never got that much recognition

I've watched this movie 5 times over and over again. And I intend to watch this movie many times as long as I am alive. What a movie, what a direction, what an acting, everything about this movie is so pure and wonderful. Makes me feel go back to that era and have a laid-back life. Such purity in story-line, it teaches us simplicity is greatness.

इस पिक्चर की नस नस में दर्द भरा है । ऐसा जीवन जीने वाले लोग भी हैं इस दुनिया में, मुझे एहसास है ।
इस फिल्म को देख कर इनके हालात देख कर एक शेर याद आया। के घरों में कब्रिस्तान बनते हमने देखे हैं रिश्तों की लाशों का बोझ उठाते इंसान हमने देखे है।

I don't know how many times I have watched this movie, but Everytime it's comes fresh to me. Sometimes I see myself as a character and feel ups and downs as movie goes by and at the end it left me speechless. I wish I could visit the same house where Sanjiv Kumar stayed one day.

Bhai u r right. It was the best time of Bollywood when it had sanjeev sir like true actors. It was a time when movies did not required six packs, hot scenes, item songs or any other such shit. Movies used to be very lovely and watchable. Every actor used to give their best performance for the audience. Really R.I.P sanjeev sir.

Started watching this movie at 11 at night thinking that will see half today and half tomorrow.. But the movie was so interesting that I couldn't leave it midway and watched it even it got late.. Worth watching.. Gulzar is renowned for making sensitive, heart touching movie and this is great example of his genius!!! Recommended!!!

Although it's only a story. But there may be many characters like Sanjiv in the real world. He ties a relationship with everyone in that isolated family, yet fails to tie the knot with anyone. He never investigates who changed the words in his letter to his mother. When Namkin shows her commitment to the family and ignores him for the sake of her responsibility towards her mother and sisters, he fails to negotiate a solution. He leaves them suddenly at the call of his livelihood and doesn't return to inquire about their welfare but only waits for communication from Namkin. Finally, when he returns after 3 years it's too late, 3 of the members are dead. For the late Sanjiv Kumar, may his soul rest in peace! Forever. Thank you.

It's been 40+ years since I saw this movie, reviving old memories,this movie also makes feel old.i was already 50 above when I watched this movie,I am 91 years old now,still strong and energetic thanks to the yoga and kriyas which I practised in my young age and still practising.

Saw this movie after hearing the wonderful song ghir ke aaiyo phir se badra. Never thought that this movie is so sensitive and beautiful. Infact I was confused by the title and never bothered to see it. Honesty thy name is Sanjeev kumar. हरी भाई अमर है. ❤️
