Who's listening to this in 2024? You are truly a legend.

Me!
3/2/2021 one of my favorite
If they're not listening to this in 2021 they're not in the right state of mind lol
I remember driving through Amarillo back in 1979 when I moved out to AZ. I was 21. Now I'm 66 remembering.
The good old days 💯
2007 I was heading out to California starting in upstate NY, then to Chicago then to Ca. I swung south to make sure I could hit Amarillo just because of this song. If I recall correctly, I had to turn around cause I drove right through it. Just one light I seem to recall.
I’ll be 66 next month & cannot believe it’s been 42 years since this song was sung by GS ❤️🩹 I drove out to the west coast with my college boyfriend in a rusty chevette in 1980 to attend grad school
Memories are what holds some of us together.
I remember stopping to buy gas at a chevron station in Amarillo,Texas. To much Snow.
My father will have left this world seven years this summer. He was always somewhat emotionally distant, undoubtedly due to his time in Vietnam. I was born later than was ever anticipated, in Amarillo. My father had always loved rodeos, cattle roping, and country music. I don't remember much about my earliest years on this Earth, but I do remember this song, the first song I knew how to sing, and the first song I shared with my father. "I'll be looking for eight when they pull that gate, and I hope that judge ain't blind" is a line I ascribe to my father entering the last frontier, and it will live with me forever.
that’s beautiful ❤️
My grandfather nor my uncles never spoke of the wars they were in either
Yup ❤️🩹 my boyfriend went to Vietnam @ 17 then married the first girl that he knocked up & after 50 years with 2 kids as well as 4 grands they called it quits ❤️🩹 he came to Florida for a boating retirement & we met @ a yacht club ⛵️ we bought a sailboat named Paradise & planned on getting mart but he was too messed up in his head so he kept on leaving home… final song that he posted on FB was Amarillo & it was the truth… his truth
I am a Viet Nam Vet as well. I would say that your Dad loved you very much. War changes everyone, but I bet I know what was in his heart, and it was you!
My condolences. May your father and mine REST IN PEACE..❤
George Strait has been a constant in my life since I was born. My parents listened to him and passed on that love to me. He would fill the house as my mom cleaned and cooked on the weekends. My dad would have him playing over that little radio in the shop as he was working on whatever hunk-of-junk he'd brought home that week. My wife and I danced to him at our wedding and my son loves to sing at the top of his lungs on the way to school. Thank you George for always being there, through good times and bad, first loves and heartbreaks, moments of joy and times of pain. I can always count on George Strait to have a song to fit the mood and help carry us through.
Well said !!!!!
@George Strait why are you commenting on here on a fake account
Just heard this song for the first time a couple days ago. What you described I was privileged to experience as a boy and as a father and husband but alas I let it slip through my fingers but reading this and hearing this song brings me tears of hope. Thank you.
Beautiful story. Thank God he still alive.
Spot on, great explanation of his music.
My second wife, long since passed, loved this song, as it was our first dance back in '84...Still touches my heart.
R.I.P. I lost my grandpa in 2019. I know how you feel.

Shes still listening.
Sorry for your loss.
I am so sorry for your loss. This was my wife and mine first dance back in 92. Today we are celebrating our 27th anniversary. I am so blessed to have her.
I am a retired cross country truck driver. In over 40 years on the road, I must have listened to this a thousand times. This is one of the greatest songs in history, in "all" of music. A true music masterpiece.
👍👍👍
I don't like country music but for some reason I love this song?!
@@rev.dr.yvonneray2035 You probably just don't like "modern" country music. I can't stand that either.
@@nihility. I actually don't like the old twangy country music. Occasionally I hear a "country" song I like and I find out it's "country pop" or "country rock". I just know that I like it. I'm not good about classifying it. But George Strait is apparently credited with a different type of country music that used a lot of background musical instruments. I like that and his singing voice.
I agree!!
I AIN'T RICH, BUT LORD I'M FREE. THE Most powerful lines ive ever heard in all of music history.😢
"Aint got a dime but what I got is mine. I aint rich, but Lord I'm free." That line changed my life and I keep it in the back of my mind at all times. So simple but so powerful, that's what I love about George's music the most.
😂
@UCpIRnoYM02XEJY7_qF3IBbg You don't need money to be free man. And It takes having money to realize that.
Then you haven't heard much music.
Actually he came from a wealthy family, but ok
It's the fiddle that does it for me in this song. Pure country and western feel.
Its got the 90s all over it.
The 1890s?
No just pure country

You can't play in Texas if you don't have a fiddle in the band
My son is in the army. He was just stationed in Texas last night. I sent him this song. Neither of us have been to Texas, but I imagine it feels like this song.

This is real country music. This comes from a country girl with generations of country running in her blood and sung to her every night before bed. This is the music that makes me happy. The best . Great video too.
@@lanehenkle6400 yep, I grew up on a ranch not far from Chris Ledoux. His version was the first one I ever heard. George does a great job with it too.
George to me has always been "true" country music. He has a quiet self confidence , free of over the top promotion. Most importantly he is what he sings about, I'd be extremely shocked if those closing clips are not of him personally.
His movie Pure Country touches on that very subject.

I first saw George Strait in 1976 , I was living in Austin Texas and had never heard of him, I was listening to the radio and the Disc Jockey , kept talking about this guy from San Marcos that was a cowboy and a wonderful singer , I think we saw him at The Broken Spoke but he was wonderful, the real deal, Austin in the 1970s and 1980s had some great country and blues music around town, Alvin Crow , Doug Sahm , The Vaughn Brothers, Lou Ann Barton, and the list goes on, but George Strait took off when Amarillo By Morning came out, that was over 40 years ago and he is still great
I'd like to wish George a happy birthday, this Thursday he'll be 71 years young! Still Playing And Singing...a true American Music Legend, then, and now!

My father was a great fan of George strait...he bought so many tickets and have been on several concerts.
George strait is a man with so much honor 🎖 🥇 I don't often listen to country songs but I love this very one.
Are you watching from the United States? 🇺🇸
Damn, the 80s were a good time...George strait, Houston was a small town, urban cowboy, and Reagan was president
Please tell me what good about Reagan?
Jerry Liptak good religious conservative man
Yup in the 80's we had Reagan, Johnny Cash, and Bob Hope. Now we have Obama, no cash, and no hope.
I miss those times......................
No cash, no hope indeed...............
+Finis “Marshall” Lee I see what you did there
This was one of my dads favorite songs. He passed away this last Monday due to depression and the horrible disease of addiction to alcohol. Im only 20 years old and he was 56. I will always love and miss you forever, dad. You’re finally free now in heaven.
Respect
So very sorry 😥
🖖
I'm an alcoholic. I guess those deployments had a lasting effect on me. I was the medic with the squad. It's sad b/c I can't even save myself.
You're not alone my friend I lost my dad to that disease as well
This is still the best country song ever best fiddle and words and the best singer. I love it every time I hear it.
I am one of your fans in Cape Town, South Africa .

Elvis Presley was the king of rock and roll, George Strait will forever be the king of country. True Texas man with a big heart and a passion for singing. Thank you for all you do George, I tip my hat and raise my glass for you.
I agree.
No, johnny cash is the king of country.👌
Marco Lopez No, George Jones is the king of country
Ed Harris no Hank Williams Sr. is the king of country

King of country was Tammy Wynette :p

I love how in back in the day instruments were used to compliment a great voice, now it seems for the most part instruments are meant to mask a second rate voice.
mathew idicula what do u mean second rate voice?
SECOND RATE VOICE = VOICE THAT SUCKS!
true
Matthew, you got that right. As much as I appreciate the guitar playing talent of Keith Urban and Brad Paisley, it'd
be nice to concentrate on the lyrics, also. By the way, I think they could have lightened up on the fiddle hear.
Now wait a minute, you don't mean Mr. Strait's do you?
His last concert was Saturday sadly.... He was and still is my hero, role model and favorite singer I'm glad hell still be writing songs but all I can say is this is where the cowboy rides away.. Thanks King George
I was there!!

@George Strait llevo 3 meses. No conocía tu música. Yo conozco y he visto en España en concierto 4 ocasiones a Bruce springsteen. Lo sigo desde 1984 y ahora te sigo a ti 2023.
@George Strait I cross my heart. Es expectacular Para dedicársela a una chica
@George Strait no no estoy.
I listen to this song every chance I get. It's just great. I'm in love ❤
One of the greatest country songs of all time. Top 5.
true
I was raised on mainly on gangster rap and rock. I used to hate country so much, I would plug my ears whenever I heard any country song (with the acception of Johnny). I never thought I'd be saying this back in the day, but this is not just one of the best country songs of all time. This is one of the best songs ever and one of the best artists out there. George you are a beast, right along with Floyd and Pac.
Friedrich Schmidt
Easily top 5
I could listen to this over and over..love it.
Love the Country Violins in this very Beautiful George Strait Song 💖 love good music 💖
The King's music is Texas fiddle. It ain't like Florida or Smokey Mountains or like Alabama. Texas Fiddle
Fiddle, but yeah
It's a fiddle when you buy it but a violin when you sell.
@@marksofa7216 haha... i 💖 that mark :)
The end of the songs makes you feel as if you really want to go there.
Best singer ever! Didn't need anything special. Just stand there and sing a great song.

George is STILL dreamy😊😍
I’m here because I genuinely like George Strait 😂
I love country music and read about Strait having the most number 1 hits (over 60!) and had to listen to debatably his best song, or at least his most popular.
Same
Nothing brought me here but me
