First heard this song while in Amarillo assisting the Marine Corps Reserve Center in 84-85. One of the local tv stations played this at the start of their broadcast day. Had a Marine named Cates from Amarillo and his dad owned a bar. On my way to Quantico to become a Warrant Officer, I tried to find his dad’s place and let him know I just left him in Saudi before the Gulf War started and he’s doing good.

I'm Cuban and I'm in eternal debt with the people of Amarillo and the Texans, for ever. Now in Virginia but missing my adoptive city of Amarillo a lot!!!
Terry Stafford, sole writer of this song, was raised age 7 in Amarillo, Texas & died there at the young age of 54. This song was named "#12 country song of all-time" by Country Music Television.
My favorite line of the song! First listened to this as I was crossing the border to go to Mexico when I was 18. First time away from home, and George brought tears to my eyes with that line. I found the strength and now listen to this every time I'm ready to move. We move to a new city on Saturday and it's scary... but George makes me calm!
"I ain't got a dime but what I got is mine, I ain't rich, but Lord I'm free..." Favorite line in all of country. The older and wiser I get, the more it means.
To anybody reading this, I pray that whatever is hurting you or whatever you are constantly stressing about gets better. May the dark thoughts, the overthinking, and the doubt exit your mind may clarity replace.

Country music has George Strait, the Blues has BB King and Rock and Roll has Elvis, The Rolling Stones and Chuck Berry. Country music and Blues are the two best genres of American music that this country has given to the WORLD. George Strait is in my view, THE MOST prominent country artist since Merle Haggard to come onto to the scene and I thank GOD for the talent he has given this man. A George Strait comes along only once in TWO lifetimes as far as I'm concerned. I'm a Southern boy at heart and ALWAYS will be and George gives all of us a darn GOOD name. There is a reason he's called "King George"

Never knew he was so popular until the 2024 record concert crowd. He seems to have safe formula, nothing too flashy.

What is the number one song CMT named number one..😊

My favorite line of the song! First listened to this as I was crossing the border to go to Mexico when I was 18. First time away from home, and George brought tears to my eyes with that line. I found the strength and now listen to this every time I'm ready to move. We move to a new city on Saturday and it's scary... but George makes me calm!
Who’s listening? Everyone…. You’re dead on, the man is an American legend.

The only American legend was Nelson Mandela .. watch your mouth
I love this song and I love George Strait. I play this video and listen to it every morning.
He is a true cowboy and great singer.

This is one of the greatest songs I’ve heard in my entire life. I hope I’m listening to it when I’m 90.
@George Strait wow, thank your for your response George. I’ve only been listening about one year, I’m totally new to it. This girl I was dating left me high and dry but she did introduce me to your music…worth it.

Will never be another George Strait . They broke the mold on him.

The right voice for the right song. The "marriage" of the two are perfect
I think you said it perfectly. I have loved this most simple of all country songs for years on the radio and today thought "Is that Jimmy Buffet?" and looked it up. Good ole George Strait.
If you grew up loving the country music of the 90’s, you have George to thank.

One of the greatest country songs of all time. Top 5.
true
I was raised on mainly on gangster rap and rock. I used to hate country so much, I would plug my ears whenever I heard any country song (with the acception of Johnny). I never thought I'd be saying this back in the day, but this is not just one of the best country songs of all time. This is one of the best songs ever and one of the best artists out there. This was the first song that I ever heard by George Strait and I was hooked! I love Rap, Gospel music guides me, but George Strait is special, God has blessed him with a great voice , great lyrics, and the ability to make his songs stories that we can all picture ourselves in. God bless you Mr. Strait.
Alan Jackson got it right when he said George Strait is just naturally cool.
2 good artists
2 great artists. They both are the Kings of Country today. Along with Garth, they are all probably worthy of being on the country music Mt. Rushmore, but add several other artists because at least 8 belong there probably.
Allen Jackson can be added to that list of greats with Randy Travis as an Honorable mention.
