That's the impression that I got as well. I especially dislike the Veil Jumper. Seriously? Walking through an eluvian is some joy ride, cartoony trip? The necromancer reminded me a bit of Hammerlocke with his skeleton reminding me of Sir Daniel Fortescue.
Calling it borderlands is an insult to borderlands, well if you dont account for the last few entries.
It looks like they had two art teams that didn’t communicate during the entire development process.
Or the old game was scrapped and a new team started another game.

Definitely agree, I’m on the fence on this, I’m a new Dagon age fan that started in 2018, love all three of the games but this trailer makes me think of a mobile game being promoted on ads. I was expecting the same graphics in dragon age dreadwolf trailer shown in 2020

There is a comic called "The Missing" which established the Veil Jumpers and they took Varric and Harding on a little adventure. Only a handful of people liked it. Any reasonable person - of which there were many - knew that this was lore breaking and stupid. Many called it out for being bs, but the writing was on the wall. To anyone who didn't read the comic, which was a lot of people, the veil jumpers won't make sense. Her being Asian is also not only lore breaking, but the fact that, yes, jumping in and out of the fade almost whimsically and not needing any object with immense power or magic is also lore breaking. This game screams bad writing by a mere two trailers. The "wait for the gameplay" crowd is just coping hard. The characters look exactly as they do in this trailer, and your character customizer will look like something out of Saints Row III. This looks absolutely horrible. No amount of character work can supplicate these god-awful character designs in 2024. Emmrich looks like a PS3 character. RIP BioWare.
In Origins the city elf storyline revolves around humans invading the elf quarter and taking the elves off to a human estate, the bride/groom is murdered and the there is an attempted rape.... leading to your character escaping the city and humans putting down a "rebellion" in the elven quarter as the elves fight back at their treatment.
Doubt youll see that sort of hard hitting writing here....
Then there’s stuff like Hespith’s creepy scene about how they create Broodmothers. There’s no way a scene like that can match that cartoony style.
Or how about learning that making a broodmother involves forced cannibalism and forced breeding...
And I believe from my memory the orphanage in the elven sector of the Capitol had some messed up shit going on as well.

The first trailer dread wolf had a completely different tone than this it's supposed to be the end of the world and yet everybody's partying?
It could deliver on both. Subvert expectations with the most recent trailer and draw in new fans, while in contrast to the trailer making it dark and traumatic enough to satiate those who've been invested from the start of the franchise.
Who are partying? They are fighting in every part of the trailer.

Even when I was a teenager (which was admittedly a long time ago) I wouldn't want to play a game like this. I like grittier realistic looking games. Even DA2 looked more realistic than this.

I was really looking forward to the new chapter but than I saw the trailer and my only thought was:

People liked the multiplayer in Inquisition. It wasn't nickel-and-dimey, progress was decent, the classes played differently, but were balanced...
So naturally, they wanted a loot-box filled, season pass microtransaction hellscape to build the new game on.
Completely missing why people _enjoyed_ the multiplayer.
I wouldn't _want_ a live service DA and I don't know anyone who would. The multi was cool because _after_ you finished the games, you had extra content that let you try out the classes and tactics you _didn't_ choose in the main game.
And as a final true, but joke point, in a multiplayer game, you can't just leave the prompt open for 20 minutes while you google the correct dialogue path that leads to you getting to smash the lizardwoman librarian. And things like that are integral to the Dragon Age experience.

The trailer is bloodless... Dragon Age with 0 blood. The whole motif of Origins was the blood splatter.

I watched the DA2 and Inquisition trailers after watching you play the Origins trailer. Cinematic, gritty, tense. Not cartoonish characters, flip comments, and a sorry excuse for a hero entrance.
This trailer was not made for long time DA fans. After 10 yrs of waiting, and they expect to release this fall, just a few months away, we deserved better than this. I'm so heartbroken.

That Origins - Sacred Ashes Cinematic is exactly what I think of when I think Dragon Age.
What's hilarious is that some fans high on copium are using it as an example that Dragon Age trailers didn't always represent the actual games very well. In what world is the Sacred Ashes trailer in the same league of "not looking like Dragon Age" as Veilguard???
@@Veloziraptor111 They might be misremembering. Because there's definitely a couple Origins trailer which do not properly convey what the game is. "We Are Grey Wardens" is a good example. There was also another one with Marilyn Manson music blaring but I forgot what it was called.
I think the game informer article showing some in game shots gives me a little hope that this trailer was just outsourced and stylized. The article showed normal looking characters. Not cartoony.

They do say that it's rendered with game engine, so what you are seeing is within the realm of possibilities
The trailer does say in the bottom corner that it is cinematic and doesn't show real footage from the game. They had a teaser made in the same style when they announced the title dread wolf, but mentioned as well that it was not the style of the game and also had some shots of the Solas model from the game which looked realistic. It's possible that the trailer was just made as a standalone video rather than as the actual style in the game.

I don't find anything wrong with this style and all it was just very unexpected coming from Dragon Age and feels like an odd fit to the thematics of all the previous games. Different things have their time and place D:

Just completely misses the point of the original Dragon Age. It's like they took a game series with name recognition and a fanbase and wore it like a skin suit. This is not Dragon Age, it's whatever the new dev team wanted to originally make with Dragon Age slapped on the title for sales.

So.. we had Dragon Age Origins, a Dark Fantasy RPG set to be the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate, then we got "Dragon Effect" which speaks for itself as the identity of the game; Later, Inquisition tried to stay in the middle, with a slight shift towards high fantasy, and if it had an end to the story, it would be great, but I guess its "good enough".. And now.. we get "Dragon Avengers!" EA excludes any kind of darkness, serious mature storyline and goes for the "feels good family fun saturday afternoon movie to entertain the kids" ... I hope it can find an audience, but sure as hell it won't be the same audience from Origins! Makes me sad...
The lead dev is a troon who worked on Sims4.
It gives me the feeling of D&D Honor Among Thieves. That's not a bad thing in the sense that was a great movie and that style and premise set in Dragon Age's Thedas could work. The music choice "We can be heroes, if just for one day" could also work if you were gathering a band of thieves, criminals, assassins, etc. who have to come together to be heroes in this one adventure. All of that CAN WORK in the Dragon Age franchise.......
It should NOT be the direct sequel wrapping up the Inquisition storyline. I feel like it's almost an insult to have a new protagonist to wrap up Solas' story instead of the Inquistor for that matter.
Veilguard feels like it should be a new entry, completely separate from the previous games. Like a side story set in Thedas.

I’ve always hated the redesign of the Darkspawn in Dragon Age 2. I know they were basically just zombie Orcs, but they looked so much better than they do now. Now they just look like zombies with angular black armor. I’ll never get over it and nothing short of a redesign will make me do so.
someone once said that of the tone of the games The Elder Scrolls Oblivion was like Snow White and Skyrim was like Lord of the Rings. DA:O was like Lord of the Rings and we are progressing to Snow White levels of tone.

Yeah, we had the same reaction, especially to the rift walking character, it looks wayyy more like an Overwatch clone than Dragon Age and I’m hoping it’s just the marketing for the trailer to bring in a younger generation.

Art design for a cinematic announcement trailer is one thing. I mean, it is JUST an announcement trailer, with ZERO game footage (other than maybe a few landscape shots) and no real "plot elements". So, the art design doesn't bother me that much as it can be completely different as far as "in game" is concerned.
What DOES really bother me, is the concept of a "Veil Jumper" when the Lore REPEATEDLY states that entering/exiting the Veil physically is an extremely RARE thing that happens and EXTREMELY DANGEROUS when it does. And yet you have someone called "The Veil Jumper" using what appears to be an Eluvean (spelling) ... and artifact that is also EXTREMELY rare if not dangerous to use in general....... THAT is the part that has me worried.
Because it seriously looks like the LORE is being distorted in such a way that it feels like the creative team (writers) have NO concept of what they are doing, which will destroy ALL hopes of having a good experience playing the game. Because we may argue on the "mechanics" of every DA game so far, it is pretty much a given that the STORY and interaction between characters has been the main point of interest.
Also, "detective" could simply be a basic "Circle Mage" researcher, with "mage killer" simply being an Antivan Crow or a possible "Templar Rogue" instead of "Templar Warrior". So, while the titles might be misleading, their "faction background" should be fairly solid as far as being based upon existing Lore elements.

The Veil Jumpers hail from Arlathan Forest where the veil is thinner and weird things have been happening. While the rest of Thedas has only experienced a more solid veil and not been able to master crossing the veil in a safe way, in Arlathan Forest you can't get around it.
Neve the Detective is an actual private detective in Minrathous. She gets hired by others and works together with the Tevinter Templars on occasion.
The Mage Killer is indeed a Crow, a high ranking one that was presumed dead in one of the short stories. He is exceptionally good at killing Tevinter mages.
Another short story goes into the Mortalitasi/Necromancer society for example. These short stories and comics are canon by Bioware and give a bit more background into the characters and their factions plus some areas we will travel too. I enjoyed them quite a lot.
The short stories can be found online on the Dragon Age website. If you're interested in that but can't afford the comics; there are YTers doing breakdowns of them so you don't miss out on possible lore.
It said the trailer was in-engine. I don't think that means the art is going to magically be less off-brand WoW

I thought with the name Dreadwolf that it was going to be quite dark in tone which I was fully excited by. But this new trailer reminds me more of Borderlands like someone in the comments said. This trailer combined with the name change makes me think it is going in the opposite direction and instead of dark fantasy is going in the type of party humour of Borderlands and Guardians of the Galaxy that has become oversaturated for me.

I though my heart has finally bleed dry after dragon age 2 and 3… I was wrong. It’s hurt so much to see my beloved dragon age to become this abomination, the BioWare is certainly creative in way of mutilating dragon age, in my wildest dream I could not imagine how it can be this bad.
Look on the bright side, EA will be shutting down Bioware after this flops.

The last shot of the dragon at the end, is either going to be a Great dragon or a god. And looks like they are in the Black City…. 7 pillars with the gods icons ! With darkspawn so the black city IS Arlathan and it’s in the deep roads under the titan clouds. Maybe. Or maybe the city rises up from the deep roads.
I wish I wasn't too shocked at the cartoony introductions to pay attention to the lore like you are doing. I love the world of dragon age!

If it's not in the main series = it's not in the lore. I don't care about all rest. And it does destroy the lore because in literal previous game there is this whole big deal about how hard it is to open a portal into the Veil.
And I won't give them a chance, you know why? Because I've been a gamer for over 20 years, and I've seen this shit over a few dozen time by now. It’s giving me League of Legends, Arcane style, Valorant, Overwatch, but with realistic textures and lighting treatment. I’d thought we would get something closer to Dark Souls, Elden Ring aesthetics.
I still can't believe that's the new Dragon Age. Like it's just so beyond the realm of ridiculous. I can't believe it lol. I played through origins like 10x because I loved the gritty, dark, emotional nature of it... and we get this... lmao. At least it's funny.

The trailer may not have been the best, but BioWare doesn’t always hit the ball at making trailers. I think we should just wait until the gameplay footage on the 11th and wait before we make any judgements based off of a 2 minute trailer

Absolutely accurately noticed, Luality, It looks like some kind of cartoon mess like overwatch. Of course I want to see the ending of this story, but how can I endure such a schedule? Even the Inquisition, for all its color scheme and style, at least resembled a dark fantasy, not comparable, of course, with the first and second parts. Yes, I was more interested in the new part of Life is Strange.
It depends, if the gameplay that comes out tomorrow is like this then it will be a disaster

DAO trailer is still one of my favs, especially with the 30 seconds to Mar song.
The truth is that when I saw the trailer, it gave me vibes of a Jackie Chan movie from the 90s and not to mention the graphics looks very "cartoonish".

First positive comment on my third trailer reaction. Your pausing on the environment art gave me hope modders can fix the major visual problems by replacing the character art. But I have a feeling the audio and gameplay might be as goofy as the darkspawns face.

I think this does sum up my issues with DAI and probably veilguard now too pretty well. DAO and DA2 were dark fantasy, brutal rpg games. DAI felt like it could have been a new wow update or something with all the new mmo like mechanics and the brighter atmosphere (modern wow anyways, old wow was kinda dark too). If DAI was its own thing I might have liked it, or more at least I thought the combat and those mechanics I mentioned were just not fun tbh lol but its real issue is it doesnt feel like dragon age at all
This trailer has the issue I felt with the newest swtor cinematic, and speaking of WoW sort of the same there in the newest xpacs, it went from a dark and gritty stylized but semi-realistic style to this cartoony fortnite/riot games style
I'll say that its just a cinematic so not necessarily indicative of the actual game. But I imagine it will be much closer to DAI than anything else and DAI had pretty much the same issues imo
Inquisiion has very poetic DLC at the end where you bid farewell to your comrades and see how your paths will go in different directions. I still think that Origins was one in a lifetime gem without wokeness and with the most alive npc companions I've ever seen. But you can clearly see in what direction they went exactly since Lelliana's DLC. It was comics, Meridith in DA2 was comics villain. Hawke is awesome character and they went woke and cancelled him / her in Inquisition and made an Inquisitor without personality.
Harding and Varrick were from DA2, or maybe Harding was from DA3 but she was his "companion". I think? I played DA like 15+ years ago now
DA :I was most about waiting for a tmer on the misson map with advisors.
This DA:Veilguard I have no idea what the story is about stopping solas or protecting the veil or simple to go and explore the veil because it's "cool".
One thing rember from DA:O is with the landsmeet thst you had to be be careful which option you picked. And there were more investigation here that in inquisition were you should be inqusitive.

Honestly, EA's marketing team has only made one good Dragon Age trailer, the one from DA2. Every trailer before and after has been varying levels of "what the fuck is this?"
I'm gonna reserve my judgement for Tuesday, I'm still holding out hope Bioware has some good in them. Still, it shows how much a mess this whole development cycle has been

Dragon Age - VeilFortGuardNite. Setting aside the fact that they screwed up Varric's hair *twice* (He was the beardless dwarf! Because he didn't like dwarf crap! Also, he never needed that waxing), everyone who made the Dragon Age games we love didn't work on this. They worked on Project Joplin, which was canned because it didn't have live service elements. Lead writer (and creator of Thedas) left, lead designer left, and now it's just some committee somewhere making the Saint's Row reboot with swords.

This new trailer was giving me Avowed meets Fortnite meets Dota 2/League of Legends vibes. I think we can see why so many OG people left the dev team and why it’s taken so long to get this game made. It sucks when you look at what Dragon Age used to be and with how popular Baldur’s Gate 3 was last year.

The trailer by itself, out of context, looks fine. The characters seem interesting. Looks like a fun fantasy romp of a ragtag crew!
The problem is it’s not dragon age. There’s no dark fantasy or epic feeling like previous game trailers (the calling, sacred ashes, Hawke dueling the Arishok, any DAI trailer), especially since the storyline is literally the end of the world with apparently multiple godly threats besides just Solas.
It should be showing a struggle against all odds. Instead we get Saturday morning cartoon fantasy bar fight that looks more suited to old school Fable
I'm hoping the marketing people hired a separate studio somewhere to produce this think, and it has nothing to do with the game.
It could just be the trailer art style they went with. We'll have to wait for actual gameplay to see :)

'Is This League Of Legends' literally my first thought too lmao. I think we all should wait until we don't get the gameplay before freaking out because it might just be the trailer, the style in the Origins one didn't look like the actual game either, but I am concerned too
I'm not worried. People who have played the game say the tone is similar to that of Origins and Tevienter Nights. Biowares also been on damage control all night posting in-game screen shots on twitter. I'm gonna assume the trailer today was marketing dropping the ball, and it's not the best representation of what Bioware cooked.
