Genuine question here: did you or others who hate ROP rate Jackson's LOTR or the recent Dune film? Because there are some very significant changes to the books in both. It seems that people actually don't mind or even encourage changes to books in lots of situations if an internet hate mob doesn't develop round something.

Finrod : [with her friends, Galadriel plays with a paper ship] It was a good ship, sister.
Young Galadriel : I made it just as you taught me.
Finrod : Do you know why a ship floats and a stone cannot? Because the stone sees only downward. The darkness of the water is vast and irresistible. The ship feels the darkness, as well, striving moment by moment to master her and pull her under. But the ship has a secret. For, unlike the stone, her gaze is not downward but up. Fixed upon the light that guides her, whispering of grander things than darkness ever knew.
Young Galadriel : But sometimes the lights shine just as brightly reflected in the water as they do in the sky. It's hard to say which way is up and which way is down. How am I to know which lights to follow?
      [he whispers in her ear]
Young Galadriel : But that seems so simple.
Finrod : The most important truths often are. But you must learn to discern them for yourself. I won't always be here to speak them to you.

What really changed in the deaths of characters before and after they took over is that ASOIAF deaths happen when it seems that the characters still have MUCH to do, and their death puts the story in a completely new direction. GOT post-takeover deaths are made only to slim down the cast. D&D killed characters they didn't know how to handle, so their death doesn't change anything in the genreal direction of the story.

"true to the source material" isn't really feasible or good for a movie/show. What matters is proper respect and reverence to the source material. Trying your best to make the vision of the author and their fans visible on screen. That's what happened with the original LotR movie trilogy. Despite deviating in various ways (which at the time was also critiqued by book readers, but they couldn't have foreseen the current film era), the essence has been preserved and the team was incredibly passionate and on a mission to make the best thing possible at the time.

If you look at Tolkien's world. He made an intricate history with languages and lore. And a story to go with that world. Almost as if he intended for people to build UPON that world. Not rebuild what is already there. If they had made their own story, on Tolkien's world without changing anything. It could at worse only be "meh". But when you ruin established characters with badly written dialogues, when the man himself (Tolkien) literally had characters written for a reason, with a reason.
Take this example from Rings of power. Gandalf shows his powers "I AM GOOD". That was cringe as hell. Meanwhile at the end when he says "When in doubt (insert hobbits name), always follow your nose". It was probably one of the best lines in the entire show. That quote is straight from Peter Jackson's movie. And it works because Jackson showed more respect towards the characters due to well written dialogue. Him and his team studied the books, the characters. And they went from there.
Jackson had to re-write shit as well, but he never once disprespected the source material. Which is why the trilogy still holds up today. Two decades later. The only thing i missed from the books were the War in the Shire. The final battle showing the growth of the hobbits as they return home from their journey. I understand why he didn't have it in there, i accept it. But i don't like it. But he respected the source material.

You guys seem to be assuming I’m specifically talking about the end of the show. I’m not. Didn’t he tell them how he plans on ending the books? I always thought it likely that most of the worst parts of the last season were probably his ideas and the show probably just didn’t have enough run time to really do it well. But think most of the changes the show made after season one take a lot away from his story. Obviously they have to change things to make the show. But I don’t like most of the changes they made throughout the series. I’ve watched many interviews where he doesn’t specifically talk poorly of the show, but the way he answers a lot of questions make it seem like he’s not very happy.

After season 4 it just became so bastardized compared to the books that even if George told them his ending there is no way they could have gotten it remotely close with everything they cut and changed. Like bran being king is certainly a possibility, but he won’t be THE king he will be A king. Daenerys has been fighting the system her ancestors started (slavery) basically from book 1 so having her come to Westeros and end up dissolving the 7k is entirely within her character. No faegon, no crazy blood magic Euron, no dornish plot, no lady stone heart, too much was left out , I can’t possibly see how they could tie in any ending George gave them. Hence why it was so shit.

It's crazy to think that they forget these stories and books got popular because the person that originally made them made it good. Why do they think "changing it up" is going to ever be received well? I think the biggest thing is that people don't understand the essence of the material, they just see a story and think it can be different or they can inject their opinion/agendas and it will magically be "good".

Because sometimes it works. Sometimes you get adaptations which are quite different from the original, and either better or sufficiently different and good for different reasons. The issue is that these people think they can produce one of those with committees of talentless hacks pursuing contradictory goals, writing for an audience that only exists hypothetically. They want to change the material to be better, but they don't want to take any risks. They want to write something that appeals to a mythical "average" consumer. They want something different and interesting enough to appeal to a wide audience, but bland and mushy enough to not turn any of that hypothetical audience away. This wouldn't work any better if they weren't adapting things, which is what they've figured out, because if they produce another mindless, mechanical cashgrab with the name of some popular brand from the 90s on it, idiots will immediately forget all the other terrible adaptations and rationalize about how this one will be different, before donating their money to those some soulless bureaucrats who are "ruining" their favorite things from their childhood.

In fact all the fan fiction writers & artists I have ever encountered in my 20 years of existence were actual fans of the IP, they wrote the fanfic because they have immense respect for the original writer & his/her IP. They were willing to put so much effort & time into the fan fiction because they liked the IP in the first place. They were simply exploring the "What if" scenario with their fanfics. An alternate timeline.
So the problem isn't fan fiction. The real problem are these woke people at Hollywood & gaming industry who hate the IP & they have an agenda/propaganda they wanna insert in these pieces of art. They look at an IP with ill intentions & have no respect for it. They are not fans of the work, they are activists who wanna change it to feel morally superior. They actively insult the real fans of the IP & make everything about themselves.
Basically fan fictions are made by hardcore fans & the community whereas whatever these clowns at Hollywood are making is not a fanfic because these writers & directors are not an actual fan to begin with. "Adaptation for a modern audience" sure is one dangerous phrase. There is like a 99% chance that the adaptation will be done for malicious reasons rather than actually adaptation a story's outdated setting into something people can relate to. One of those rare examples I can think of is Parasyte's Adaptation. But damn usually if you hear that phrase, you should get ready to be burnt by fire.
Unironically a lot of old horror anime really needed that whole "adaptation for a modern audience" bit that Parasyte got... because it's such a garbage cliche that someone gets to a phone booth but every damn time the line is severed because that is their way of handling outdated settings.

I took a screen writing workshop a couple years ago and it really opened my eyes to why so many good ideas will never hit the light of day while so many trash ideas get made. The writing community is super small and insulated. Its an echo chamber where not being "on the team" means you will NEVER get past the MULTIPLE levels of gatekeepers and script writers that come before you EVER get close to a director or producer reading ur script. The writing community in Hollywood is almost entirely ran but the gay mafia & they will END YOUR CAREER if they think you are not behind EVERYTHING they support 100%. That workshop really turned me off writing once I realized its not really about what you write, but who you know and what you have to do to get them to back you.

As a struggling author, keep writing anyway. Hollywood's heading for a huge crash and new opportunities will dawn following it. If you've got a good film idea, write it down and keep it handy, since you never know when you might get a chance to use it. If nothing else, you can always go the extra mile and make it into a book.
The lesson to take from here is to never trust the mainline institutions to get things done anymore, and that thanks to the internet indie stuff can and will flourish without them.

You can add Megamind to the list now, but honestly I don't even think it's _because_ of the wokeness, or not caring about the lore. I think it's simply because they can't even do that well. I mean if you screenwrite... I don't know, a version of Beauty and the Beast and the Beast is a woman instead, technically, the gender doesn't actually change that much about the story.
That is, you know, if you can actually write it well.
But if you write it with the _specific intent_ of celebrating your awesome lesbian couple rather than just being like "hey, how would princess x princess affect the worldbuilding realistically, lemme study medieval France ('cause that's the setting) and ask a bunch of competent historians to make sure I get my lore as right as possible", then yeah, you're just being woke instead of legitimately trying to do something cool. Same if you're trying to make a sci-fi version of it. Like, you can, but at this point just research lore and worldbuilding to make sure you make something that's actually unique. This might be a hot take, but from what I've watched and read so far, I think people would be a lot less offended by adaptations if the writing was good.

If you look at the SATURATION of news on tv/radio and paper/web it's for the exact reason of creating a total blanket of propaganda with which to control and shape the population at scale: It's not to inform them at all but to control them.

On one hand, I do agree that some writers/producers/directors can be arrogant with their treatment of the material, to the point where they might as well be writing their own story - but they would rather masquerade it as an already well-known piece of fiction. That awful “I, Robot” film with Will Smith comes especially to mind.
But on the other hand, there are adaptations that I feel actually improve the source material. Disney’s “Pinocchio” from 1940 takes a lot of liberties with the material to streamline the plot and make the character more endearing, and it’s pretty much resonated with people far more than the original (or at least for those who aren’t Italian).

I've always been critical of _Game of Thrones_ 's final season. They truly lost the thread, didn't know what to do with the characters most of the time, and tried to Hollywood Ending the thing when the real ending is probably that everyone died. But we'll probably never know, because Martin has zero focus on finishing the books. He'll do anything _but_ write them, it seems. How long has it been now, since _A Dance With Dragons_ ? July 12, 2011 according to Google. Really, George? Almost 13 years to the day now. Will we ever really see the end of this story?
What's also pretty bad is when other productions seemed to try to imitate _Game of Thrones_ . Like _RWBY_ . They did this in their Volume 7 and 8, I think, and it didn't fit that series at all, and also made their lore and worldbuilding fall apart. Not a single character wasn't done dirty, and by the end of Volume 8, both I and my niece had decided to drop the series altogether.

Not well. He has to negotiate with his own partners on things.

I mean the movies of lotr were quite different from the books but they respected the tone, the characters, the story. That the differance to netflix witcher. They are right when they say a movie is not a book. You cant have inner monologues and stuff like that. But thats not the point. The point is that they dont respect the source material.

My take as someone who has little to no idea what they're talking about and has never read the books or even watched the show is that he wrote a giant and intricate story, but his writing style is more "let it happen and find out" rather than "meticulously plan and execute an intricate story" so he's written himself into a situation where he can't find a satisfactory way forward.

The ending itself is not the issue, but the lack of build up and sudden drop of quality in both dialogue and plot progression leading to that ending are.

    • @ricardokojin7

Because he wants a ret****d ending. He is so into the idea of "not making the hero 'the hero'" but he knows he cannot pull it off. The only way he would write a good ending would be if he gave up and "turns out sometimes there are heroes".... but he won't, better yet.. he can't.
The whole "garden" thing is fine, until you realize that gardens never stop growing and absolutely do not reach a central point. He would have to have 10 unrelated "endings" happening in different parts of the world with characters that never met each other and make no difference in each others lives.
