Welcome back for another Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire video. In this video, I talk about what George R.R. Martin said during his interview, when he was asked, "will he let anyone else write in his A Song of Ice and Fire universe?" This is an interesting subject because fans have always wondered what will happen if George R.R. Martin isn't able to finish writing his books himself. As you all know, George R.R. Martin has been writing the Winds of Winter for roughly 13-15 years. He still hasn't announced an official release date for the Winds of Winter. This makes many of us wonder if he'll ever finish the Winds of Winter, or A Dream of Spring... Will he allow anyone else to finish his story for him? Can he protect his writing forever? George R.R. Martin doesn't seem to think so. He believes someone will eventually start writing their own stories in his universe. What will this mean for A Song of Ice and Fire if he doesn't finish it on his own?

I feel like his writing the two back to back because GRRM his like a gardener in his style of writing so I think his not just writing the WOW but his on the DOS too and maybe of they got to be published one day he'll publish them back to back a year between the two
And since winds is so big he'll have to publish two parts of the same book so I think he'll release winds two parts separately

I wish he would just be honest about why it never came out back then. Like if he geniuses believed it would be out in 2015. And then later said it would for sure be done for that convention in 2020. I am in the middle of A Clash of Kings now, and I’m incredibly proud to have been able to pick the books back up after the trauma I felt because of the show. I’ve been able to work on slowly forgetting it was a part of the story at all, because I only want to remember the books as canon. His notablog post really had me thinking he finished the manuscript for WoW. If I'm right, he'll spend most of this year editing. If the book ends up being split into two, we might get a Dunk & Egg novella in between releases. Winds is definitely the hardest book to write because you have to take all those loose threads and bring them together. The final book will be much, much easier to write. We might only have to wait five years!

Brandon Sanderson most definitely should not be the one to finish the story. He's a great writer, but his style of writing is not complementary to GRRMs style at all. Robin Hobb would be a better choice in my opinion, she is friends with George and was involved in teasing out all of his earliest ideas for the series.

Man... I just hope and pray that everything that George is going through is all doing good somehow. Admittedly he really IS getting old, and nowhere any younger by that obviously. As years go by he will indeed get weaker. Although I still believe that he will someday finish the last two books, I hope it will be really good, fitting, and will be written without regrets. Never mind the haters; much love George!

At this point, I don't really think GRRM has written much more than a brief outline for Winds of Winter, much less Spring. He just gives off the vibe of being done with it all, and is just running on fumes. My favourites for finishing this series (and I do want it to be finished, eventually) are authors Dan Simmons (Hyperion Cantos, Illium, Olympos, etc.) and R. Scott Bakker (The Second Apocalypse series). Both are fantastic writers, with no lack in imagination, and who have put out work comparible to Martin's own works. I am 100% confident that with either one taking on the task of bringing ASOIAF to a conclusion, they will do so honouring this world, and we will see these books within about three years of their writing of it. As to whether either is altogether jazzed about doing it, who can say. But I'd rather Simmons or Bakker have a crack at it, than the default fall-to, Brandon Sanderson. Nothing against him, I just don't think he's the best choice for fitting himself tonally into the Song. Anyway, that's my two cents.

What I understand about the delay is that he had a hard time structuring the 5 year time skip that he had in mind. A Song of Ice and Fire was a passion of love when George started writing it. He wasn’t trying to write a world for US. He mostly wrote sci fi on the side while working on TV shows. This was a hobby, not a career for the man. We took the magic out of writing. It’s our fault for what’s happened to George and the book series. We beat down a mans joy, formed it into a laborious task.

There are so many lore experts on RUclips, if they got a team together of lore experts and professional writers, I bet they could deliver a dream of spring which ties everything up and follows the symbolism and pays off the story lines, especially with George’s help. Just trusting it to a single author because they are famous would be a massive mistake. George has his own unique style, you would not want a new creative director adding their own style to it, you would want a team of experts dedicated to reproducing George’s style and concluding his plot lines in painstaking detail.

Kafka wrote many incomplete works, most notably, "The Castle", that literally ends mid-sentence.
That said, comparing 19th century dystopian, surrealism that created it's own genre ("Kafka-esque") to a fantasy writer isn't really fair.
I'm sure George has trials and tribulations like all of us, but Kafka was a broken, frail, mentally-ill victim of parental abuse, whom died in his 40's.
Kafka's final instructions included having all his works, complete amd incomplete, burned. If not for his singular, loyal friend Max Brode, realizing the value of the insights in his work, that genre of surrealism/dystopia wouldn't exist.
Let's hope George has such loyal friends, otherwise, I don't think he's going to release either book in his lifetime. Other than pleasing eager fans, it's kind of a lose-lose situation for him, and the show definitely played a part in fans clamoring for a different ending, when for all we know, those "broad strokes" would be the series ending, with Bran on the throne.
There's no scenario where he makes the entire fanbase happy, and he probably feels it's best to just sit on what he has, and release it posthumously. Finished or not, I don't think he plans to "be around" to see whether fans accept his vision for ending ASOIAF.

I can’t see him ever finishing it purely because the HBO series happened. I agree with the Brandon Sanderson idea because of the excellent job he did with WoT. It has to be remembered that Robert Jordan wrote copious amounts of notes. The same would have to be true for A Dream of Spring or it wouldn’t work. I believe the HBO series is King Kong on GGRM’s back. I really don’t think he knows how to end it and is scared of writing it because it will be micro analysed more than enjoyed. Another possibility is maybe it is written to be published posthumously sometime in the future…
