Volvo developed the three-point seatbelt in the 50s. In order to increase the safety of all vehicle occupants, they decided not to apply for a patent. Good guy Volvo ❤️
They patented it but share with the industry without royalty. They also pioneered the systematic crash test similar to what NHTSA and IIHS are doing today.
Volvo is a pretty cool guy, eh saves lives and doesn't afraid of anything!
After that everyone in car industry agreed to share all patents and knowledge about safety for free, because safety is more important than money.

You will notice that in the front small overlap crash tests where Volvos are crashed, the front wheel is sheered off, as was also the case in this test. The front wheel of the BMW was crushed back into the rear of the engine compartment and possibly into the footwell area - but not the case with the Volvo, which is something to think about.
At least with the BMW, you'll know where to find your front wheel and not have to go looking for it like with the Volvo! lol
Ye and the BMW kinda just flew away and the volvo was still on the ground
Is finding your wheel really your first priority after a crash like that lol.. @@bobjohnson205
@@mikimus3583 I'd say the opposite. The bmw was almost stationary wrt direction of impact but rebounded perpendicularly, cvf the volvo which glanced off the barrier and was still moving forward quite quickly after the impact - i.e. forces much much higher in the BMW. BMW performed well but Volvo was better as might be expected.
Meh. If that were the case, the BMW wouldn’t have scored perfect. Yes, some cars will push the wheel into the compartment. Not in this case. Both are very safe, and I would even say the BMW is better for whiplash injuries according to the video.
As you could see, the Volvo slid off the barrier and kept going. This is Volvo's literal best small overlap feature. To minimize impact, it's designed to slide off. They also invented the three way seatbelt. Most car manufacturers would patent this. But Volvo was kind enough to actually share this feature to other car manufacturers to improve cabin safety. This is why Volvo is always ahead. But the grill ejection feature on small overlaps on BMW's help retain the value of the grill, so you can sell it and afford the repairs of the small overlap damage. See the grill ejection feature in action at 0:33. (The grill ejection feature isn't real, but it's funny how the x5 reacted to the small overlap by letting go of the front grill).
I'm pretty sure Volvo patented the three-point belt.
@@Chris371M They didn't.

Contrary to what people might think, the BMW is actually pulled forward by the grill not by the engine which is why the grill kept going after the car was stopped by that corner.
Exactly, that's why the new BMW grills are bigger - to increase the total horsepower! Honestly the new grills are so big/great I'm not even sure why they bother keeping the engines at all anymore.. just seems like extra weight for no reason
The designers did a great job! Excellent aerodynamic properties of the “radiator grill”!
I loved the grill’s ejection system.

The grill said "aight, imma head out"
The momentum transfer of that volvo was insane, like a F1 car designed to break in big pieces absorbing most of the impact! The way impact decelerated was bonkers. Fine engineering indeed!
Yeah the capture at the end showed it, the BMW with its tires off the ground because more energy transferred to the whole structure of the car, whereas the Volvo's crushed better and parts came off, absorbing enough of the energy of the crash that the wheels never really left the ground like the BMW did. I'd probably trust the Volvo more in a roll over risk incident, but the BMW is of a higher general quality and driving experience, and tbh between these two, I might take the BMW. I'll make that decision when I hear the Bang and Olufsen sound system in the Volvo, I work on them but haven't listened to that one yet, only the Harmon Kardon which left much to be desired. I liked the premium system in the 2019 Nissan Maxima more than the HK Volvo system lol.

There is one very important thing here, as why I would chose and have chosen Volvo, that is the G Force felt inside the car. That is what will keep your internal organs in one piece. Volvo has managed to get lower G Force at impact. Best example is in this clip. See how the Volvo just lets all parts fly and it just moves away almost forward. The BMW is still great and safe, but the G Force is stronger, as it almost gets to a stand still before rolls away.
The deflection and energy dissipation from the volvo is amazing! I guess that’s why they are the leaders in Safety!

The Volvo crush and energy deflection built into its body and frame design is definitely Superior in this. More energy was transferred into the BMW passenger area by the car coming to a quicker stop. The Volvo crushed in a way that deflected the energy off to the side more instead of into the cab area. That is one of the Volvo kept rolling further which means the people within its cabin received less energy and would theoretically receive less forced trauma injuries. Small differences in design make a huge difference in the life of the person or his family that is in that car. Hats off to these engineers! 👍🏻
Looking at the data the acceleration values are BMW 94 G left, 38 G right foot. Volvo: 27/16 G, so yea, quite the difference in this test.

Another good safety feature of Volvo's is that, if they hit someone they are designed so the person is more likely to go up onto the bonnet and survive, rather than beneath the vehicle. There is a crash test video of this happening...at a press event I think, albeit accidently, the collision sensors (which I think were designed in this vehicle to pick out vehicles not pedestrians) didn't pick up the person who was standing directly in front of the moving car (which I think was an XC90) with tripod and camera and got hit by the car.

As laypersons, most of us would look at a crash like this in real life and think, "wow that expensive car got completely totalled" while in reality that crumpling and breaking away probably helped save the driver's life.
Cars that are built more stiff may look better after a crash but harm the driver.
They need to add a "Very Good" evaluation. These results are vastly better than the results found on other "Good" crashes.
Amazing ... Awesome ... Fabulous ... Could be next level beyond "Vastly"
They do all this carefully calculated testing and then rate with the vague terms bad, good, very good etc? Even a 10 point scale sounds too basic. I'd expect them to rate on a scale of 0 to 100.

dont forget that volvo's seatbelts tighten on impending crashes and it pulls the chair down in an angle like bucket seats in race cars, and the headrest follows you. at least on the 2016+ volvo xc90. i dont know about the older models or bmw's. the crush zone took all the impact rather quickly which propelled the car to the right or straightforward but kept going. i wonder if the brake system was engaged, why it kept rolling? not sure if brakes are a factor or not included in the overall of things, bc again the volvo will have auto braking at less than 30mph or if the computer calculates an oncoming crash. it happened to me, a car was behind me and started to get really close on the highway where i was going 70mph. the xc90 automatically tighten my seatbelt, brought down my seat, and it lightly started to brake. the car behind me backed off and kept a distance. i know that volvo's in europe tailights will blink if the car behind it is too close, but i wonder if it does something similar to US consumers of xc90's??

All seat belts tighten during an impact. That is why they always have to be replaced after their charges fire.

Yes, the Volvo's mitigation is superior to the BMW's. More force is transferred to the occupants in the BMW, leading to more severe injuries.
Yes and No. Because the Volvo ricochet also has an disadvantage, it could be thrown outside of street (and there could be anything, anyone etc) or a parapet causing Double Impact.😏🤔

Volvo's have always been built to keep the riders safe. If you look at the damage done to the outside of the car. Volvo builds most things (or at least use to) so with impact they go outward rather than inward towards the riders. The hood completely disconnects from the car, along with part of the side panel that could possibly get lodged into the car or into the windshield. However, it also has a lot to do with how the energy is dispursed in a crash and whether it'll trigger any of those points at all.

In this particular test Bmw crash seemed a bit less violent for the driver than volvo.
I’ve had 7 Volvos and my S60 saved my life when I was totaled by an 18 wheeler. I have a new XC90 now.
E eu tentando ter só uma Yamaha Neo 125 cc
