You can program the firmware upgrades thorugh the usb side port and cable provided... I have done it. No need for a separate kenwood style cable.

I keep seeing that some people are having better luck with the ham version, cleaner output, more power etc.. Do you have an opinion on this?

I do believe if you get a Nagoya 771G antenna you will get great results with GMRS. Dual band antennas are great only for ham.

Dang he thinks this scans slow hmm he should look at the retivis rt95. Personally I think this thing flys through the scan.
