Esipenko has done really well, he's a bit down but he had a decent tourney. Hopefully he will grow as a player. Congrats to Hikaru, huge turnaround after the first loss.
I think he's still shocked by the way he was ripped apart by Aronian on round 5. That game shows the importance of preparation at this level because he got confused with his schedule and didn't prepare.
They said Hikaru doesn't deserve to play for the candidates. They said he is finished in classical and he should only focus on Blitz and Rapid . Well well well what we have here.
its all about Nakamuras Coffee Chess crew training games. when you can handle Carlini and the boys in SoCal... the rest of the World doesn't scare you.
Aronian and Oparin were probably playing the best of anyone coming into this. Plus Rapport. And Hikaru beat all of them over the course of two legs. Amazing stuff.
Espienko got my respect, he was considering a move to win and not to draw. He is less likely to qualified even if he won the game, but that mentality hopefully can make him further in the next event.
@@JimmyBoosterCrate How so? Playing tournament chess under classical time controls is Carlsen's full time job. He has been doing so for well over the last decade, and has had a slow and steady rise that can easily be extrapolated over the last portion of that time. If you find that scary, then you are playing the wrong game.
And people said that Esipanko should replacve hikaru in the tournament. Well look what we have here. Unfortunate for Andrey but for all the religious Hikaru haters, as Dj Khaled always says " You played yourself. "
Not just people, but specifically Sergey Karjakin. And now, Hikaru has soundly beaten Esipanko in two separate pools and Karjakin has been temporarily banned from chess.
Karjakin has made a few sus moves lately with his life. The question now is, does he have both the brains and humility to undo those moves, or will he double down? 🤔
It's every interview that FIDE does in this bizarre double interview format with both the winner and the loser, while they ask questions about why they think they won/lost.
It's quite simple if you'd paid attention to Hikaru's comments and frustration over the first couple of days during the tournament. He knows that these guys are only as good as the computer engines they study. He's just taking them out of their comfort zone and they can't think on their feet.
They're all GMs above 2700. Saying these guys are just as good as engines is a little too much (is this what Hikaru really said word for word? I don't believe he would say this). The engines provide the main ideas but the humans still have to calculate and decide. Also its not like everyone lost all the games whenever they were surprised by a rare opening choice. Eg its not like someone was able to win all 4 rounds in the roundrobin. There were drawn games too.
Hikaru said in his stream top gms are able to use the engine in a different way than lower rated players. Hikaru uses engine too. Also, everyone tries to take the opponent out of their comfort zone, especially as blacks
Ok so Esipenko saw the draw line after trading rooks, so instead he chose to play for a win and lost. Oh well. Too bad we did not get to see Nakamura x Oparin in the tiebreaks, would've likely been very nice to watch.
Hikaru is a giant of the stream. So next time remember to give him a box to stand on next to Esipenko. You can clearly see the fire burning in Esipenko though. He learned a lot today. Great game. White should have won in the attack. But Hikaru is such a tough cookie in calculating all the tricky stuff. He even finds it amusing to play such a position I hear. I bet he does!

I think he's still shocked by the way he was ripped apart by Aronian on round 5. That game shows the importance of preparation at this level because he got confused with his schedule and didn't prepare.
It seems like Hikaru is in fantastic mental space, extra sharp and has better game awareness than ever. His rise is almost meteoric.

Andrey young but incredibly professional. Its so difficult to stand and talk about how you lost to the guy that everyone though you should beat
Karjakin and his wife really put Andrey on the spot
Esipenko is the future top 5 at the very least.
Nakamura's end games are very good and his ability to defend also. These high level players, there is the tiniest difference of who wins or loses.

Magnus' actual rating is higher than this. That's scarier

Yeah please stop this privilege.
Silly remark. One guy chooses to sit, the other chooses to stand. There are no rules.

We usually get a continuous smile from Andrey. It was just a semi-smile at the end this time. I’ll take that :)
