He allowed Fabi to go for a Dutch setup with f5-f4, Qe8-Qh5 etc. Sure, we'd all lose handily against someone like Fabi, but I think two things Mike could have done better was not to entomb his bishop on d2 and also to have played both e3 and g3 and therefore prevent that deadly f5-f4 pawn push. Yeah Fabiano is one the best. His peak rating is 2844 and he made that game look easy no surprise.

You asked what was the line that white could have used to keep an advantage?? After the captures in the center it all evens out and it is completely equal.
There is no advantage. This is a very solid and reliable line as black to counter English 1.c4 2.Nc3, even Anand used Bb4 for along time as black.

Qf5 was a nasty move. It was threatening Qe4++, as well as a queen sac on b1 to promote and mate with the rook and bishop. Ouch

Lol, I’m 1500 and know who Carruana is. I don’t believe most higher rated players don’t recognizes the former World Champion Candidate specially when he is from the USA, the country where these “hustlers” live. Most likely they watched the matches he had vs Magnus

    "what are you doing?"
    "reverse Grand Prix, my dude."
It's funny that many English players aren't familiar with this attacking plan, but it's super strong.

    • @ChristianHegele

Technically it's not the Grand Prix move order, but it has all the hallmarks of Grand Prix attacking plan (trade bishop for knight to discoordinate White's queenside, execute f7-f5-f4, play Qe8 to use the diagonal to infiltrate the g or h file.)
