“how am i supposed to recommend this?” this line hit home for me. i put in so much time & effort into this game, but when it comes to recommending it to anyone, because of how niantic is handling it, im not even close to a hard sell. and thats just the game as a whole, the most positive thing i can honestly say when it comes to getting someone into pvp is “you can get legendaries at rank 20+, but the rates are awful”
Niantic seriously needs to realize this is a game played on a REGIONAL and WORLDS level. People love this, it’s serious and competitive, and a lot of us take it genuinely seriously. They need to hear us.
What we need is a person on the inside. I am a PVPer in an MMORPG, and we were neglected for over a decade. Updates and care for the broader game were great, but since no devs cared about PVP, nobody cared. But we recently got a major PVP name from the community as a mod at the company, and it has been HUGE for the health of PVP
I am so grateful for you using your platform and you are far, far too nice. You said repeatedly that you don't want to be negative but you aren't - you are correctly, dispassionately diagnosing the problem that a billion dollar company allows to happen.
Axn, thank you for making this video. We need more content creators and others with a voice in our community speaking out about this; it seems like negative publicity is the only way Niantic might care enough to do anything. Personally, the game has run like garbage for me ever since the biomes update a few months back. I have a 5-year-old Android phone so it didn't have the best specs to begin with, but it still ran the game pretty well before the update, with a restart after each GBL set typically enough to ensure a smooth experience. Ever since the update, I can hardly get through 2-3 battles most of the time without game-deciding 1-turn lag or frame drops. It's not uncommon for me to refresh game data, clear the game's cache, and restart my phone and *still* encounter these issues on the *first* battle after re-opening the app. It's absolutely atrocious and and it's ridiculous for there to be any expectation of "oh, just get a new phone" when (a) this is supposed to be a game that doesn't require the newest flagship model and (b) many issues are still present in those new models. I think one thing that could really help (at least to start) is for Niantic to isolate PvP from the rest of the game--no game-intensive battle backgrounds, no wild 'mons spawning around you while you're battling, nothing. This likely won't affect performance issues affecting the game outside of PvP, but it could at least be a step in the right direction for fixing PvP specifically.

I quit the game at the beginning of this last season because of all these things you mentioned in this video it was breaking my brain and I decided to walk away because I couldn't take the insanity anymore. Life is better on the other side. Which is sad because like you it has been one my favorite games I ever played but that made it all the more heart breaking.
Omg , I quit pokemon go 2 years ago because of this issue. Reached legend several times, but to be honest, didn't want to support Niantic since they are incapable of fixing their game. Since than , nothing has changed. This is really sad.
This has been happening to me for months. At first it was one in every 5 battles. Now I lag EVERY SINGLE BATTLE. I'm not a pro player, but before this I was winning approximately 17 of the 25 daily battles, and now I'm lucky if I win more than 11

I used to battle every day, but now only once a week/month till lag and bugs kick in again and I take another frustrated long break. Last season I played a bit more after taking a season off, got to 2980 elo and then lag and bugs lost me 200 elo again. The game can't be taken seriously at this point, which is a shame because I really liked competitive battling
1:39 That's me. Those bugs have been around for years and I'm just tired of waiting for Niantic to fix them. I prefer to compete in other games that have Esports and avoid bitter tastes in my mouth. I miss playing POGO and pvp, I'm not going to deny it... but these 6 months without playing POGO and focusing on other Esports has been one of the best decisions I have made in 2024.
very much apprechiated that you speak up on the matter. that said, i have my doubts it makes much of a difference. niantic makes alot of money with selling tickets and remote raid passes and stuff, while gbl probably is something they consider more trouble than it's worth.

Last season was a pain to reach Legend due to all the games I lost to lag, framedrops, fast attacks taking 2 extra turns or the game being literally unplayable. Let's hope Niantic actually cares for the game and listens to the community. Keep up the good work!
I don’t know any Niantic employees or developers personally, but I would hope they are committed to excellence and want to put out a product they can be proud of. I understand how frustration can build when there are persistent issues in a game that you are invested heavily in. Niantic either simply lacking awareness or not projecting awareness by updating the list of known issues is an issue in and of itself. Of all the problems you mentioned, that should be the easiest one to address. At the end of the day, no gamer wants to feel like a cash cow playing a game that developers don’t really care about. Good communication is key to fostering a healthy community between developers of games and the players who enjoy those games.
I feel sorry for the champ. I am glad you raise up your voice for the community. But there is a good chance Niantic will ignore this just like what they have been doing for years.

Huge amount of respect to you Axn for saying this. Players like myself have absolutely no voice and some of us are just casual players but we love GBL. Our only way of getting better is through our daily 5 sets. But when the game malfunctions so often, it's such a slap in the face of my time and effort in trying to get better. Why should people bother supporting a game through time and resources that is riddled with bugs? Hope this gets addressed, been saying this for a while. 😩

Amen! I started playing again a year ago and discovered PvP, and I love it. But I get SO frustrated playing, though. I lose so many matches from glitches, freezing, etc. Matches that I shouldn't lose. Thank you so much for discussing this 🎉🎉
Thanks for calling this out, I hope other Influencers and champions step up and also call out Niantic. My wife and I just upgraded our phones, I a 15 pro and her a s24 ultra and it’s insane the difference of how poorly the game runs on android. Top of the line phone and it’s awful.

I’m running the game on an iPhone SE2 and have experienced these drops quite often recently I’m glad to hear that it’s more of a game thing than a device thing.
I got very frustrated at the state of PvP in poGo, i threw my phone in anger multiple times because I lost many winnable matches due to freeze, lag & frame drop issue...it's frustration at peak, you don't feel sad because you lose...you feel aggravated because you could have won it...that's what it's frustrating. Niantic only cares about jamming shiny Pokemon at our throats and making money of events, raid passes & incubators. Only if users quit they'll understand
Thank you for this video! Those frame drops freak me out again and again. They happen most likely at crucial moments of the game, at swaps, when trying to fire a charged move and especially when I would have the opportunity to fire a winning charged move. One turn freeze, and I lose the otherwise won game.
Thanks Axn for making this video. Sadly over the last several seasons I've seen this get worse and worse, though this season the lag and issues in GBL have been far worse. I've finally gotten to the point where I'm stepping down from streaming my battles. I hate to say I've given up on the season but I've lost too many games to these issues this season where I should of had wins, and then getting losses in matches you can't win, it's like fighting with an arm tied behind your back and being blinded folded at the same time. Only reason I'm doing it now is because of the dust and that way I don't fall out of practice, but I can't take this game seriously anymore. It needs to be fixed but Niantic has ignored us and don't care.
I stopped playing Pokemon Go a while back as PvP seemed to be the only thing left to really do after they brought in stupid updates, raising prices and reverting changes. It's baffling to see that there is an issue with PvP, especially since it's in Pokemon World Championships the last few years. They really stopped caring about the playerbase and the game performance and focus more on money and cash grabbing events. It's just upsetting to see, as this is a full 180 of what this game once was
Yea I have had some matches where the debuff doesn’t show if it actually happened and also some denials when switching in. Like my Talonflame lost to a Quag CMP tie chance because my buttons didnt come up when I came back in. I also have had the game freeze up on me too. Thanks Axn for this video.
Appreciate you making this vid. Our World Champ. I can only hope the message gets through... Eventually. What's crazy is that Niantic have stumbled across a competitive game that is so engaging, and I don't think they realise that. The format actually works so well for real time battling that provides an endgame for players to use their catches and their resources for. I get that it's not for everyone, but the fact that there is a strong community of players that is willing to put in hours every day to practice, to travel the world just for a shot at being the best, means it's something worth backing. For me, Stockholm was a big eye-opener in terms of Niantic's priorities. They disabled the new biomes for competitors, which means they know that is the root of some of the problems. But that didn't stop them rolling it out, or motivate them to roll it back. Having a cool aesthetic means more to them than having PvP actually work, and that speaks volumes. Personally, I don't really care if the game looks good. It needs to work first and foremost. Right now, the frame drops on Android are awful. It's borderline unplayable, and there's no sign that Niantic even cares.
The most insulting thing is how the most common issues (1 turn lag on entry & DRE) (before framedrops became more constant) were marked as "resolved" 2 months ago without any change whatsoever and no communication about it either.
I’m not sure if they’ll ever do this but they could take a page out of Ubisoft’s book with rainbow 6 siege and have a season for fixing the bugs like operation health. I just really hope they listen to some input and give us any communication at all
iOS also has this thing where if you stop tapping there’s a chance it shows your opponent stop tapping as well.. and when you tap again it catches up so sometimes making catches just doesn’t work
Yeah Boycott Pokemon GO then Niantic will listen if we all quit playing the game for a while. Niantic will get desperate then and maybe they'll fix it but we should quit playing just to hit them where it hurts. Their pockets
My guess is, Niantic has no financial incentive to improve PvP which doesn't generate enough revenue in-game, so they dedicate their resources to other aspects of the game that do. Competitive PvP is run by Play Pokemon, an entirely different company. So this should be addressed to the Pokemon company to put pressure on Niantic to fix it. I don't see any other scenario where Niantic cares enough to fix PvP
Disagree, pvp is a huge part of the game. I'd bet a large number of players only do raids and events to keep on top of new meta releases for pvp. With pvp broken, the motivation for players to raid and do events will drop and so will Niantic's revenue.
@@simonevans876 This. who's gonna spend a ton of money on cresselia raids for raid attacking. PvP makes the pool of pokemon people want larger, which leads to more profits.
I would sincerely appreciate it if the GBL itself would change. In vgc, when you play normally in a game, not a tournament, there is no open team sheet, so you don't know attacks, items, abilities, tera type, but at least you know what 6 pokémon oponent has and you and your opponent get to pick 4 pokémon to battle. If pokémon go had the S6P3 system right in the game (it wouldn't have to be an open team sheet) I think it might attract other people, or like me, bring them back to pvp, but if they never add this and fix the bugs, I don't think I'll ever want to go back to pvp, because for me, the format of vgc and pokemon go tournaments suits it much better :(

Aest said a very good point but I want to add on that while an interlude season after this one may sound great, I am doubtful this will ever come through. iPhone user here and can confirm multiple lag out games, stutter lags that make 1turn FMs into a 3 turn. Dropped 150 ELO in todays battles due to the brutality
I urge anyone who says this is a handset/connection issue to play on even the highest of range Android phones, it happens no matter what. The frame skips during charge moves are horrendous.
Great video. Thanks for making this. Making GBL work for competitive play is the second step. 1st step is making it accessible and fun. I've been playing since 2016 save all the pokemon with stats that are good for GBL but never play GBL. Why? It's not fun. I'm waiting for it to improve but nothing happens. I feel bad for the people who have invested a lot into GBL.
even challenging friends in the friends list is a glitchy nightmare; the slightest amount of cache buildup will prevent the challenge from going through, entirely breaks the recipient's game, etc. . rocket battles too have the shield hangup glitch when the next fast attack will faint their pokemon.
Today right before watching this video, I faced a ho-oh lead with my xerneas, safe swaped lando and somehow managed to get switch back using both shields, when ho-oh came back I baited a potencial stone edge, grabbed my opponent's last shield and sent my own ho-oh (yes I have no ho-oh counter lol) the opposing ho-oh had done 3 incinerates before and went for a brave bird before me, but game is so bad that I got a 1-turn bring-in I had to guess whether they would try and catch my own brave bird rather than pausing a turn and seeing the incinerate animation start, I definitely should've won that game
The last couple of days have been really bad for me. Many sets ended up being 2-3 when they easily should’ve been 4-1. Whenever I’m getting close to 90-100 energy, the game stops letting me attack. So I’ll have back-to-back charged moves ready to go, but nothing happens when I tap the screen. Meanwhile my opponent is attacking without any issues and I end up getting farmed down when I’m loaded with energy. It’s incredibly frustrating and also discouraging. It always happens at the very end of the battle too… like Niantic is saying “haha, fuck you. You’re not winning this one”.
Glad someone is speaking out on this. I'm a rather new player, a little over a year now. But once i got into pvp, i finished every battle every day. Then we had the biome update and the stuttering. The frame drops are insane. Games totally freezing. I have an s23 ultra. Performs amazing for every other program. Swap in to use my stored charge attack? Nope, get fast move down beofre you can even see the option to throw the charge move. Sad.
I can’t be the only one the game keeps force closing on. When starting a battle, when beating a raid, when clicking a showcase, and when opening gifts.
That android lag thing is just so true. Stuck at ace and one reason is because every and i mean every game lags for me and that makes me miss turns that coul be fatal for the win.

I’ve seen the “this battle can’t be recovered” much more frequently than usual.
That's cuz it's a hacker, you didn't get lagged out, you got crashed out.

Niantic only cares about jamming shiny Pokemon at our throats and making money of events, raid passes & incubators. Only if users quit they'll understand
Thank you for this video! Those frame drops freak me out again and again. They happen most likely at crucial moments of the game, at swaps, when trying to fire a charged move and especially when I would have the opportunity to fire a winning charged move. One turn freeze, and I lose the otherwise won game.
Thanks Axn for making this video. Sadly over the last several seasons I've seen this get worse and worse, though this season the lag and issues in GBL have been far worse. I've finally gotten to the point where I'm stepping down from streaming my battles. I hate to say I've given up on the season but I've lost too many games to these issues this season where I should of had wins, and then getting losses in matches you can't win, it's like fighting with an arm tied behind your back and being blinded folded at the same time.
Only reason I'm doing it now is because of the dust and that way I don't fall out of practice, but I can't take this game seriously anymore.
It needs to be fixed but Niantic has ignored us and don't care.
I stopped playing Pokemon Go a while back as PvP seemed to be the only thing left to really do after they brought in stupid updates, raising prices and reverting changes. It's baffling to see that there is an issue with PvP, especially since it's in Pokemon World Championships the last few years. They really stopped caring about the playerbase and the game performance and focus more on money and cash grabbing events. It's just upsetting to see, as this is a full 180 of what this game once was

Yea I have had some matches where the debuff doesn’t show if it actually happened and also some denials when switching in. Like my Talonflame lost to a Quag CMP tie chance because my buttons didnt come up when I came back in. I also have had the game freeze up on me too. Thanks Axn for this video.

What's crazy is that Niantic have stumbled across a competitive game that is so engaging, and I don't think they realise that. The format actually works so well for real time battling that provides an endgame for players to use their catches and their resources for. I get that it's not for everyone, but the fact that there is a strong community of players that is willing to put in hours every day to practice, to travel the world just for a shot at being the best, means it's something worth backing.
For me, Stockholm was a big eye-opener in terms of Niantic's priorities. They disabled the new biomes for competitors, which means they know that is the root of some of the problems. But that didn't stop them rolling it out, or motivate them to roll it back. Having a cool aesthetic means more to them than having PvP actually work, and that speaks volumes. Personally, I don't really care if the game looks good. It needs to work first and foremost. Right now, the frame drops on Android are awful. It's borderline unplayable, and there's no sign that Niantic even cares.

The most insulting thing is how the most common issues (1 turn lag on entry & DRE) (before framedrops became more constant) were marked as "resolved" 2 months ago without any change whatsoever and no communication about it either.
I’m not sure if they’ll ever do this but they could take a page out of Ubisoft’s book with rainbow 6 siege and have a season for fixing the bugs like operation health. I just really hope they listen to some input and give us any communication at all
It's a shame for a game that's so interesting to be ruined this way because its creators refuse to do basic upkeep on it

iOS also has this thing where if you stop tapping there’s a chance it shows your opponent stop tapping as well.. and when you tap again it catches up so sometimes making catches just doesn’t work

Yeah Boycott Pokemon GO then Niantic will listen if we all quit playing the game for a while. Niantic will get desperate then and maybe they'll fix it but we should quit playing just to hit them where it hurts. Their pockets
My guess is, Niantic has no financial incentive to improve PvP which doesn't generate enough revenue in-game, so they dedicate their resources to other aspects of the game that do. Competitive PvP is run by Play Pokemon, an entirely different company. So this should be addressed to the Pokemon company to put pressure on Niantic to fix it. I don't see any other scenario where Niantic cares enough to fix PvP
Disagree, pvp is a huge part of the game. I'd bet a large number of players only do raids and events to keep on top of new meta releases for pvp. With pvp broken, the motivation for players to raid and do events will drop and so will Niantic's revenue.
@@simonevans876 This. who's gonna spend a ton of money on cresselia raids for raid attacking. PvP makes the pool of pokemon people want larger, which leads to more profits.
I would sincerely appreciate it if the GBL itself would change. In vgc, when you play normally in a game, not a tournament, there is no open team sheet, so you don't know attacks, items, abilities, tera type, but at least you know what 6 pokémon oponent has and you and your opponent get to pick 4 pokémon to battle. If pokémon go had the S6P3 system right in the game (it wouldn't have to be an open team sheet) I think it might attract other people, or like me, bring them back to pvp, but if they never add this and fix the bugs, I don't think I'll ever want to go back to pvp, because for me, the format of vgc and pokemon go tournaments suits it much better :(
Deleted my game because how frustrating the RPS and lag is right now... we'll see if they listen or not. But glad you are trying to bring it to their attention.

Aest said a very good point but I want to add on that while an interlude season after this one may sound great, I am doubtful this will ever come through. Even if it does happen, they barely fix anything or nothing ever changes.

iPhone user here and can confirm multiple lag out games, stutter lags that make 1turn FMs into a 3 turn. Dropped 150 ELO in todays battles due to the brutality
apple seems to have less frame drops, but I can say they are still there

I urge anyone who says this is a handset/connection issue to play on even the highest of range Android phones, it happens no matter what. The frame skips during charge moves are horrendous.

Making GBL work for competitive play is the second step. 1st step is making it accessible and fun. I've been playing since 2016 save all the pokemon with stats that are good for GBL but never play GBL. Why? It's not fun. I'm waiting for it to improve but nothing happens. I feel bad for the people who have invested a lot into GBL.

even challenging friends in the friends list is a glitchy nightmare; the slightest amount of cache buildup will prevent the challenge from going through, entirely breaks the recipient's game, etc. . rocket battles too have the shield hangup glitch when the next fast attack will faint their pokemon.
Most frustrating is when you have a move an come in to cmp but your move doesn’t pop up. I’d say that infuriates me most
Today right before watching this video, I faced a ho-oh lead with my xerneas, safe swaped lando and somehow managed to get switch back using both shields, when ho-oh came back I baited a potencial stone edge, grabbed my opponent's last shield and sent my own ho-oh (yes I have no ho-oh counter lol) the opposing ho-oh had done 3 incinerates before and went for a brave bird before me, but game is so bad that I got a 1-turn bring-in I had to guess whether they would try and catch my own brave bird rather than pausing a turn and seeing the incinerate animation start, I definitely should've won that game

Even if they fixed it the next update would break it. But we can always hope.
The last couple of days have been really bad for me. Many sets ended up being 2-3 when they easily should’ve been 4-1. Whenever I’m getting close to 90-100 energy, the game stops letting me attack. So I’ll have back-to-back charged moves ready to go, but nothing happens when I tap the screen. Meanwhile my opponent is attacking without any issues and I end up getting farmed down when I’m loaded with energy. It’s incredibly frustrating and also discouraging. It always happens at the very end of the battle too… like Niantic is saying “haha, fuck you. You’re not winning this one”.

I play iOS and there are many games that straight freeze on me. So frustrating, especially when you have a win in the bag.
Glad someone is speaking out on this. I'm a rather new player, a little over a year now. But once i got into pvp, i finished every battle every day. Then we had the biome update and the stuttering. The frame drops are insane. Games totally freezing. I have an s23 ultra. Performs amazing for every other program. Swap in to use my stored charge attack? Nope, get fast move down beofre you can even see the option to throw the charge move. Sad.
I think the only way Niantic will react is if the game freezes during the finals and both competitors lose. Let's just hope it doesn't come to that

That android lag thing is just so true. Stuck at ace and one reason is because every and i mean every game lags for me and that makes me miss turns that coul be fatal for the win.
