    Amazing job. A couple of suggestions. You can buy small teflon tubing on eBay that eliminates the drag on the fishing line. Works better than the WD40 straws. Also, instead of fishing line you can use jewelry wire, which is like fishing line with a tiny flexible steel cable inside it, which keeps it from stretching. Available at large craft stores. Also, almost nothing will glue to teflon tubing, though for some reason aluminum tape sticks to it like crazy, so you can wrap a small piece of aluminum tape around it, wherever you want to attach it, then use anything that will stick to aluminum to glue it down. I've made similar hands before. Never found the need to run a line to each joint. If you use teflon tubing to eliminate drag, one line will control all joints on one side of a finger. You just tie it off at each finger tip and the bending gets divided between all joints. Or rather than tie it off, you can run it through the tip of each finger, being sure to secure it, and use one continuous cord for both front and back cords, to avoid bulk at the finger tips. The teflon can also be buried inside the bones, so it's only visible at the joints.

    Looks nice and spiffy. Though you probably figured out after you jointed and strung it that the joints are annoyingly complicated. Each one actually functions like a trunnion. Its also why arthritis can be the worst in the hands, since its just a thin layer of cartilage in between the bones allowing them to slide against one another. As soon as that breaks down, its just bone on bone grinding. All in all considering you worked just from a single image, it turned out really nicely.

    • @RonaldWalters2010
      @RonaldWalters2010  9 лет назад

      Droemar No... sorry! I shaped the joints with a drill bit and a Dremel tool. Then glue the bamboo into one side of the joint. Just something you have to play with.

    • @Droemar
      @Droemar 9 лет назад

      Ronald Walters I am trying to find a good way to make joints that hold their position, if you have any suggestions! :)

    • @RonaldWalters2010
      @RonaldWalters2010  9 лет назад

      Droemar My bamboo joints have a limited range of motion but that is the best I could come up with at the time. A pined hinge joint (like a door hinge) would be good or possibly a ball & socket joint but those are difficult and time consuming to make for a bunch of small finger joints.

    Hey Ronald, I stumbled across your channel from your wooden hand video and I was amazed by the workmanship. I was so inspired by the hand you have created that I wanted to do something similar for my engineering anatomy class. I have watched your all your videos on the hand and I think I have the basic idea down. But I really want to be able to make my hand close all the into a fist which your hand cannot do because the limited range of motion from the bamboo joints you have made. I was thinking about using hinges that you would find in a locket or a small jewelry box. What do you think of this idea, do you see any problems with it or do you have any ideas how it could be executed better. I would also love to know more about the way you made your hand and any insight you could share would me would be greatly appreciated. Once again thank you for making these videos about your wooden hand they are so amazing.

    • @RonaldWalters2010
      @RonaldWalters2010  6 лет назад

      Actual finger joints are difficult to replicate. Real finger joints are like a double end ball & socket joint without the socket. Cartilage in the joints is flexible (in youth), lubricates the joint and provides a tremendous range of motion. But the segments are all held together by the tendons (some interwoven), tendon sheaths, ligaments and muscle, which is difficult or impossible to duplicate in a working model. My fingers have more upward range of motion than would be normal for most people and not enough downward range. Locating my bamboo hinge lower on the joint would probably allow the hand to close more (but will not appear normal) and at that point the pull cord tension will increase on the eyelets which may cause another problem. Searching on RUclips for Mechanical Hand finds many results, including one 3D printed hand which closes too tightly into a fist because the individual control of movement for each finger segment is not possible in that model. I shaped each finger joint by hand using a Dremel tool type flexshaft grinder and just kept grinding until I thought it looked fairly realistic. Use of a wood tenon type hinge would provide the range of motion with less realistic appearance. You will find the various hands on RUclips generally using hinges of one type or another, elastic cords to pull open and pull cords to close. Each of my control levers operate 6 pull cords for one finger which is not how a finger works. The hand provides more individual control of each finger segment. Each control lever could be replaced by 3 servos (resulting in 15 total) somehow controlled by Arduino and programmed to move the fingers more normally. Making something like this for a single college course will probably require way more time than available or you won't be spending any time on the other courses. Starting off with a Halloween prank video, a couple stop-motion videos and finally the completed hand, I spent two years playing around with this (and I am an experienced modeler). Good luck with your engineering anatomy class and thanks for watching! Please Subscribe and tell your friends about mu channel. Ron

      Ronald Walters Being an Engineer is something you are born with, it is a way of thinking and looking at problems. Colleges and Universities do not make Engineers, they just hand out slips of paper that say that you think the way they want you too.
