Dr. Drunkenstein doesn't go to the bar... He has brought the bar home... Most of the time he's drunk as a skunk and the times he's not, he's drunk as a bishop in a cathedral on a Sunday...
"Look at this. Absolutely beautiful. It’s supposed to be a chess night, I believe, but it’s like some Dark Souls magnificent demon steed. Who would not want that in their cabinet? I’m pretty sure Magnus has a separate property just to keep all of his trophies, but this is the one you don’t want to miss out on because you wanted to beat Hikaru." -ACC
This was a great tournament, albeit super exclusive with a small player pool. I really think that the chess world in general is going out of its way to really offer more and more variety (960 tour possibly coming up, etc.) to keep Magnus interested as they know there is probably no way he is going to play 4-6 classical chess tournaments a year anymore and with poor Ding hating being WC (from what I can tell) they really need Magnus to stay involved in chess overall. Seems like it has worked out pretty well imo as it has been a solid year of entertaining chess since the WC match.
I really like the concept of the Casablanca Tournament - revisiting great games of the past, with interesting starting positions very different from the stale standard openings that all serious chess players have memorised out to move X. All that is necessary is choose an interesting game from the past, at a point where the computer evaluation is about equal for both players. I note that this is in rapid time format. But as most of the games were from Classical tournaments, it might be even better if the time format was Classical.
I find this chess variant tournament a great idea. I like the very old games even more, so the Steinitz game in this tournament. Imagine a famous Morphy-Anderson game. Some of their games had enough rigour to start from, I think. Some of the most famous games ever (Evergreen, Immortal, the Opera game) are probably lost within the first few moves and therefore not suitable but Morphy-Anderson was probably not decided within the first few moves, even by today's standards.
Winning the tournament and drawing the game against Hikaru is a win for Magnus. I think we’ve all seen the interview where Magnus said Hikaru is his nemesis. This was a win.
The Rauzer was the variation I chose to get my feet wet in the Sicilian. I call this the "house" variation, because Black doesn't castle, but has a little house of pawns in the center, and all the "and this is what's played nowadays" are all shocks to me. Theory has moved a lot in twenty years I suppose.
They should include more competitors in this event maybe six or eight total and invite the big name GMs Nordibek Wei Yi Pragg etc Magnus and Hikaru seemed to enjoy the event a lot Hikaru saying it’s been his favorite event in years I’m sure we will see more it
No. Because the event was continent fight. Africa - amin, 7 time african champion. Europe - magnus America ( south+north ) - hikaru 5 time us champ Asia - anand , 5 time world champ. Pragg or others dont have the criteria
Thanks for your videos. Just please, the camera movement seems distracting to me (just raising it here in case if was distracting to others as well). So just a #suggestion whether you want to switch that off? :)
#suggestion I'm thinking of trying to record videos but my camera is rather old. I see you've upgraded your camera recently mr. Agad. Could you kindly tell me (I beg) which is the make and manufacturer of your camera?
I would have crushed Hikrau with that position, it would have made winning that trophy even at much more immaculate. If they are forced to play positions of the past, ofc I like it. So many positions to consider, from Tal's positions, Morphy's positions, to Fischer's positions. Of course we can even consider positions in the games between the engines, hahaha. Like Stockfish vs Alpha zero.
#suggestion Please cover the game 5.1 between leela and stockfish at tcec. Stockfish beats leela as black by sacrificing its queen for two minor pieces.
@@agadmator I realize now that the game follows the famous Mikhail Tal vs Milko Bobotsov game where Tal sacrifices his queen on move 11. You have a very nice video on that from 6 years ago.
#suggestion Hey Antonio! I'd like to recommend Giri x Shankland, Round 11 of Tata Steel 2019, I believe you never brought this game to the channel but it definitely deserves it Keep up the great content
"That is the only move that wins and that is the move that Magnus played" -- I swear I hear this line every single time.
Its sometimes good but its sometimes very obvious.
He cheats 😂

I'm sure Magnus can't wait to come back home to show his friends at the bar and the library this beautiful trophy!!!
Dr. Drunkenstein doesn't go to the bar... He has brought the bar home... Most of the time he's drunk as a skunk and the times he's not, he's drunk as a bishop in a cathedral on a Sunday...
"The hardest move to find is always with a magnificent demon steed back" - Ivanchuk, maybe
😂😂😂
What a fun idea for a chess tournament. Hopefully they'll keep releasing the rest of the pieces in the same theme as trophies.

The excitment in Agad's voice when he said "dark soulslike demon steed" lmao
"Magnus, you look like you're still drunk. Heavy night?"
"Yeah, if you can put it down over there for me, that'd be great"
I saw a video once from a few years ago where Magnus said that he would have a drinks or two before playing in big games so he could loosen up.
The trophy is hermetically sealed. If that bulletproof plexiglass ever breaks, the horse is going to find its three friends and start the Apocalypse.
as someone form Casablanca m really proud that our city and country Morocco hosted such a magnificent and unprecedented event
Its called caPablanca.... lDl0T
Yeah Morocco 🦾
why do i always think these 2 would only give their best in a friendly bar match with a couple of beers
Hikaru nearly always loses to Magnus. It's a surprise when he draws and a Miracle when he wins😂
That trophy is a magnificent steed
You build a separate room just to hold the trophy.
Yes, I like the idea of playing from a starting position in an old game. It provides new information and analysis.
I think if I got a trophy like that it would go on my coffee table. To make sure everyone sees it and talks about it.
And someone accidentally drops it from the coffee table
"The position is now objectively winning for Magnus." A statement repeated more than almost any other about MC games.
Not sure if Magnus took the trophy, or the trophy took him.

Agree to disagree. I think classical should be considered less and less personally.
I were eagerly waiting for this recap by Agad, thank you sir
Thanks for the demonstration of not recapturing knight with bishop ❤.

Magnus and Hikaru - great confrontations and fights!
it was one of the most exciting chess events

Magnus got the last 2 trophies he didn't have & now he has every Chess Trophy there is.

"the position is objectively winning for Magnus" as all positions are...
Gg magnus the GOAT!
Yet another tournament won.
This format was really enjoyable!
"Darksouls like demon stead" ❤
The reason Magnus is the best is because he processes under pressure quicker than the rest ....he knows the game
12:57 So yeah, very nicely played by BAO-OUV them
This trophy looks like an electrocuted horsy.
Magnus gave the 2nd place to Hikaru
they seem to get along now

In Magnus's defense, I too would force a draw against Hikaru, given the opportunity 😂😂
Specially if the prize is a Trophy of a dark souls demon steed once ridden by Ornstein in his last stand against the black dragon.
Going to watch Casablanca tonight!
Wonder if you could display the taken pieces as you explain the game on the side. Thanks :)
Ay I made it on the board, love all the great work!
They should do these with engines and see if they can refute some of Tal’s sacrifices
This demon steed trophy idea of Agadmator is a conspiracy theory i can get behind!
@agadmator would you like to cover Kasporov vs Karpov World chess championship match?
Silly question probably but why not block with bishop at the end instead of moving the king?
So how are the positions selected? And do the players get and time to think about the position before the game?
players get 2 mins time to think the position & then press the clock
How many moves did they play after they got the position? they didn't have much to work with.
That is one awesome trophy! I don't fault Mangus!
Wicked steed, indeed!
Thank goodness Chess is a game where both walk away alive, as brutal as chess can be!
Gg as usual! Thanks.
"You could easily make the mistake of playing Bishop captures on f6... oh, sorry, Bishop captures on f6."

Amazing Magnus wons another trophy and waooo what a beautiful trophy this is
I assume they have to pick starting positions that the engine says are 0.0?

I would have loved to see the line with ba4. Doesn’t it win the rook after a fork?
exactly a dark souls demon speed knight trophy is badass to win haha
The trophy looks like the dark horse ridden by one of the Nine
Thanks for the great trophy pic
After Rh8, why not ... Qc5 ?
That is not a trophy you take home, or to the bar or library. It goes straight to the Smithsonian.

A mighty steed, indeed.
I would pay for an Agadmator play through of Dark Souls

The trophy is clearly meant to represent Blucifer, the demon horse guardian of Denver International Airport
Magnus been winning every tournament since he was born LOL
If it were not for Firouzja, he now would have won 9 tournaments in a row, that's dominance
If you think that steed is bad-ass, you should see the stagecoach it pulls.
I too want a magnificent demon steed.
Magnus rode his trophy home.
bro the trophy is Ludwig the Accursed
Omg I FORGOT ABOUT LUDWIG!!!! XD
very cool tropy❤
Did levy's editor made that thumbnail?
No I MADE IT
the trophy seems to be made in the style of Giacometti, but indeed with some Dark Souls fantasy elements on top #vastknowledge
Magnus and Hikaru are the best chess couple ever!
Nice
Can someone please explain how they revist past games? Eg Antonio talks about the womens match. Do the players play the same first 5 moves or what
The organizers set up the position reached in the historic game and then the players play from that point. They don't know the position in advance.
We love back stories
I wonder who designed and made that trophy
Magnus simply passed this game, I mean chess. It is too hard to invent a format in which he is not a champion.
Agreed, magnus must have separate property for all his trophies
