When he talks about the 2000s colorblind thing I find it so funny. He probably perceives it that way because the specific communities targeted explicitly in that era were middle-easterners/south Asians regardless of their religion (due to war on terror rhetoric) and still very anti-black (I remember mainstream academia trying to justify the bell curve). Now sometimes the tides shift like how the mid-2010s targeted Hispanic people. It’s quite obnoxious that he thinks hatred is a matter of mean comments and not things like having your community surveillanced, police brutality, being targeted by governement agencies bc of your background, etc.
I'm white, European and born around the turn of the century, I was also raised to be colour-blind..and I still agree with the sentiment behind it... that doesn't make me racist but it does mean I lack empathy and perpetuate racism in society (I understand that as true to a degree) - I'm open-minded and all but change is hard, and being constantly bombarded on the internet with ridicule and what is politically correct and how my people hold down black people and how we all discriminate structurally that's a shitty feeling - now as a white man I have the power and get to decide, do I want to subject myself to that discussion or do I want to turn away and shut it out? I think colour-blindness allows for a relatively civil debate in increments where people know and affirm they shouldn't discriminate, they are raised with that in mind and reflect choices against the ideal to at least not discriminate individually (but still structurally do so I guess), they can still educate themselves when people close to them bring up issues or topics - that is simply not the case with the arguments on race-consciousness where it feels like you are always not conscious enough and picket lines get drawn and rather than white people getting a feeling of progress they feel like things are in a bad state all the time, why bother with all the demands then and eventually even more liberal people tune out the rhetoric and arguments entirely
Just for the record, the ridicule doesn't bother me much but I can imagine a quite many people are bothered by it, growing up raised colour-blind it is somewhat strange that many black (young) people don't see it the same way at all and see colour so strongly themselves. As a white man I think many whites also can't stand the historical perspective embedded in these arguments, my 22-year old American classmate with Indian background is suddenly an expert on colonialism, slavery, structural racism, my white guilt as a citizen of a former colonial power, talking about reparations because her family was oppressed way back when.. I'll be brutally honest, white people don't care about history, history is a book concept not a lived concept for us, we live very much in the here and now and care about making things better where we can, not fixing injustices incurred on structures established centuries ago..my great-grandparents were perpetrators of the holocaust, my parents lived in a country occupied by the Soviets, once the structure falls its time to forgive the wrongs and build anew.. I think talking to white people about historical wrongs from more than a century ago is a waste of time and effort, arguments should be focused on today's society
He doesn’t know that East and Southeast Asians weren’t stereotyped as wild and violent for reasons, so white supremacists don’t tend to conjur up imaginary threats about us as much; men from these demographics aren’t seen as “competition” for white supremacists. The racism that comes with the assumption of passivity from East and Southeast Asian people, the colourism and classism that pervades immigrant families’ mindset.
And anti-East/-Southeast Asian hate crimes do not have the same level of historical oppression that indigenous, black, and brown people faced, although it really proves how pervasive white supremacy is in our institutions, in our upbringing, that if we speak English fluently, have lighter skin, and sides with the systemic oppression, we can be considered as “honourary whites,” at least for the time being.

rac·ism
noun
prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism by an individual, community, or institution against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized.
This is not to say Hasan's point is invalid, but you can be racist towards white people, as being white is a defined ethnicity and prejudiced speech towards them is fundamentally racist. However, they cannot be oppressed as they are the 'in group'. Racism ≠ oppression. Now, being racist towards white people, especially while joking, is fine with me and I'm white. It does not have the same connotation because we aren't oppressed. However that does not mean it isn't racist, it is just less severe.
Hassan saying society it’s mainly white supremacist is completely false and dumb.

@@michaelmcgovern9881 Autism has many layers beyond social disfunction, though that is certainly a major one. Paved roads in their neighborhoods? You know how taxes work right? A lot of people in those neighborhoods are either on welfare or sell drugs, so their county’s don’t have the money to pave roads. About hassan's point of Irish people becoming white due to proximity to power, in Belgium (and probably most of Europe) Turkish and other Middle Eastern people aren't considered white, while Hassan consider himself white.
Same here in germany.
I feel like depending on the POV of the one who says it, the definition of white can be a bit different. I am a portuguese that has been living in berlin for 20 years.
From a "blondes" perspective I am considered hispanic or southern.
From the southern perspective we are white but not blond (mostly).
In England the racists wouldn’t consider him white.
The reason why Hassan considers himself white, is probably because his face hasnt turkey all written over itself.
Ironically as a portuguese, I look more turkish than hassan.
Two things. First, as Hasan has noted a number of times, he’s completely “white passing”. The only thing that gives the game away - besides everyone in this space already knowing he’s Turkish - is his name.
Second, and fundamentally more important, Hasan is _literally_ “White” according to the US government (Census Bureau):
“A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa. It includes people who indicate their race as "White" or report responses such as German, Irish, English, Italian, Lebanese, and Egyptian.”
Just something I thought might be of interest to non-Americans. It _should_ be of interest to a lot of white supremacist Americans, too, but the completely arbitrary definition of “white” kind of undermines their whole, well, I guess their whole existence.
So what you're saying is..

Racism definition: prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism by an individual, community, or institution against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized.
It doesn’t say that you need to be oppressed to be a victim of racism. I understand that white peoples DO NOT experience the same issues as other colors might, but it doesn’t take away the fact that if someone is trashing on someone for being white (which happens especially now) is still racism. I’m confused.
Don't worry. It's meant to be confusing and it definitely isn't supposed to make sense. It's a popular belief that a lot of people hold that the only definition of racism is the definition of Systemic Racism. But that's only a loophole people cling to in order to get away with saying racist and bigoted things towards people. For example, people say it's impossible to be racist towards white people since white people aren't systemically oppressed. It's just an excuse to enable racists.

I think the essentialist language from tik tok zoomers comes from them hearing this academic language about race and not taking the time to fully understand it. I don’t think we should write off reductionist language about white people as harmless. It’s definitely less harmful than racism against minorities but it definitely doesn’t feel good for anyone to hear themselves talked about like that. White people aren’t being fragile for not liking that, it’s very understandable. It also makes everyone less receptive to the actually nuanced convos we need to be having on race.
No dude, wh*te people are just evil and they need to be told so.
It's actually crazy to me that people don't understand this.
i think hasan does a good job to try to address this but the original video or other content advocating white supremacy can just say "white people are being attacked" and point to out of context news headlines and tiktoks to play into fears that the things that happened and happens to marginalized people will happen to white people. i think hasan's rhetoric could still be more nuanced but these nuanced conversations you're talking about are hard to have on the internet, especially when you need to invest way more time and thought into debunking all the reactionary and bigoted content that appeals to biases of the consumer of that content.
young boys and men are not being radicalized because women or feminists are mean to them, they're radicalized by people like andrew tate or jordan peterson appealing to their fear of things like "loosing their masculinity" or power over them instilled by their patriarchal environment.
@@sunshinehunter3676 Hasan did a terrible job here. Generalizing and descriminating against people because of the colour of their skin is not okay, even if they are white.
White people are absolutely 1000% being super fragile. Also its been 300+ years now, if white people wanted to listen to marginalized groups they would have made significantly more progress in equity.
White people use this fragility and take offense to the smallest, most insignificant things as an excuse for shutting themselves out of talks about systemic racism. Its fucking annoying.
Like if someone making a joke a white people, causes you to disregard the plight of BIPOC, then you really didn't give a damn in the first place. You just need an excuse, so you don't feel guilty for being awful.
That Asian boys video is just about the issues recognition, not about: „let‘s make it all about racism towards white people“… why is that a problem? Why is even talking about it, treated like it’s a crime? That’s how much criticism he gets, just for talking about something (as I realize now) so problematic.
And also, isn‘t racism the discrimination and prejudice towards people based on their race or ethnicity? So racism can be shown towards literally every human on this world, if I understood right. Black, Asian, Hispanic and any other, as well as white people. So why are we making fun of something that is a problem, maybe not as big yet, but can easily grow into something bigger If not talked about and listened to? But I understand it’s very easy to push anything aside that is unfamiliar to someone’s made up mind, especially when we don’t want to grow out of our prejudices and even need to admit that we may have some.
It’s way easier to just say: „Nope, see no problem here. Oh but- what the hell is he talking about???“ and also: „Shut up!“.
It’s tiring, so tiring.
I'm half white and half Indian (not native) and I look like a generic white guy. I have never once been offended by someone making fun of me for being white, or making fun of white people in general, but I have had a few anti-Indian comments rub me the wrong way.

This is the exact same kind of logic that successfully caught on in the lead-up to Gamergate in 2014. A lot of young people, especially young women & femme-presenting folks, had just learned about feminism and were posting cringey anti-man stuff (along the lines of "unalive all men") on tumblr and other platforms. These were literally just extreme takes from dumb high school/college kids who had no following and no influence. However, society at large was becoming a bit more feminist in good and reasonable ways, like game developers trying to have higher quality female characters and fewer misogynistic tropes. These tangible changes in the culture led to people thinking that the most extreme takes they saw online were where this slightly feminist culture shift would eventually lead. People still believe this. "Cancel culture" is a more contemporary form of this paranoia that the the dominant culture will swing completely the other way. In both cases the common culprit is that people need to GET OFF THE COMPUTER and touch grass, because people chirping online is just that.

All the while, my black mother grew up in a time when she learned to hate herself and it was also okay for her to teach me to hate myself.
The one phrase that has taken many years of therapy for me to get over is, “Stop going out in that sun. You turn jet black the moment you step into the sun. Nobody wants to be jet black.”😢
I’m not even dark skinned. Of course, my mother is lighter skinned than me and saw me as lesser because I was a darker skin tone.
I didn’t get the chance to understand how my melanin thrived in the sun. I didn’t get the chance to know that the sun loves my skin and I should bask in the sun ALL THE TIME!!
It didn’t take direct white supremacy to teach me I was ugly because of the color of my skin and the depth of blackness I could achieve when out in the sun without getting sunburn.
