I'm someone who had zero experience working on vehicles/engines up until I bought my RE. Using your videos, along with some others, I've managed to install crash bars and a sump guard, change my oil, adjust my tappets, and adjust my chain. I'd say it doesn't take experience to work on, just good instructions and some basic mechanical comprehension. My journey on this started when my dealership said it'd be around $650 to get my valves adjusted. I wasn't about to drive an hour to pay someone that much for something I could learn to do myself, andhavent turned back

Same situation. Bought an RE Himalayan and the dealer was an hour away and wanted 600$ for first time maintenance at 300 miles. I bought what I needed for about 100$ and Never looked back!

I bought a 2023 Classic 350 in Chrome Bronze (the other chrome option) about 13 months ago and the love affair with this motorcycle continues. I an new to motorcycling but am doing some of my own basic maintenance and cleaning and have found it enjoyable and yet another way to connect with this cherished motorcycle.

I had the speedometer issue as well, but I live in Arizona, U S.A. where nobody cares if your speedometer works or not. Therefore, I simply rode the bike until the parts came in...about three weeks. It took the dealer three days to replace and I was out the door. Wonderful dealer! Like you, I do my own maintenance so I save some money there and in return, I gain a "relationship" with my bike. A wonderful thing!

The issue that could arise in the UK, is the amount of recently introduced 20mph areas all around the country. Even for the 350, an easy limit to exceed.

A motorcycle for motorcyclists; spot on.
I have almost 1k miles on my Hunter since late October this year, I've done the service myself, as is my habit, and found the bike to be the equal of, or better than my previous Japanese bikes in fit, finish and equipment.
I want a lot of the same things the Indian home market wants; reliability, ease of maintenance, and good value.
    RE delivers👌

Morning Stu. My Speedo failed in the Summer, warranty claim put in, and I am still waiting for a replacement. I have constantly used my bike, as I fitted a Cycplus (?) bicycle GPS speedo. Since the weather has changed back to normal, the Speedo worked fine, so hopefully by next summer I will have had my replacement 🤞😅. Other than that, I love my Classic 350. The rear wheel spokes have suffered from year round riding, being pretty tarnished now, despite me taking as much precautions as possible, but the front are fine 🤔 Winter riding is a killer for the polished engine casings, but easy enough to keep on top of. Using 0 grade wire wool, and Autosol, brings them up quite well, with about an hour’s worth of elbow grease. The rest of the bike is outstanding. I do have a cleaning/protecting regime, and I too have not had any rust appearing anywhere, and I have ridden on some pretty gritty/salty/mucky roads. Performance is adequate, but fun nonetheless, and will go up any hill, and down any dale. It’s also a conversation piece no matter where you park up, and brings joy to many, not just me. Thanks for sharing.

Wholeheartedly agree, bikes can get under the skin, I feel exactly the same about my little 321cc Yamaha MT03. I bought it initially due to it’s low seat height but then it grew on me due to it’s low weight, brilliant fuel consumption, excellent build quality, slick gearbox, super smooth power delivery, 100% Yamaha reliability, cheap servicing and enough power (42 bhp) to enable overtakes, headwinds and hills to be conquered with ease. Downsides, I don’t suppose the looks are to everyone’s taste, but you don’t see it when you’re sat on it !

Once again my friend you have summed up both Royal Enfield ownership and the true meaning of a motorcyclist as only you can , keep it simple and honest! I have just got my Meteor 350 up to the 1500 mile mark and changed to fully synthetic oil, and its changed so much through the running in process that I cannot remember how tight and hot it was in the beginning but bloody fits the bill for both its now an entirely different animal and I can’t help thinking that so many people have bought these bikes and sold them on again just because they don’t have the patience and need instant results, running the motor in properly has im sure been a big factor in how my bike rides but fully synthetic oil has been a revelation, as has the fuel x optimiser which a lot of people said is just snake oil but no its not and neither is the open air box but concerned with the motor running hot after i changed the filter cover i then put the optimiser on and the two together have made a massive difference , you can’t really use more air that the syst can deal with but now its got more air and more available fuel so its simply got bags more power at lower revs, and last is the 16 tooth front sprocket again a major improvement through the gears i think its geared for riding on Indian back roads because the bigger front sprocket if anything has quickened acceleration because first gear runs out just as it beginning to pick up its skirts n run but theres more useful urge there that i can now access with the extra tooth , keep up the good work fella and no i’m I don’t want to swap my precious 😂👍

Stellar video, Sir! Thank you for fleshing out the errant speedo issue. My valve lash experience on both the INT and Meteor, with over 6500 miles on both, is after the initial 300-mile adjustment no further adjustments have been necessary. I have and will continue to check every 6000 miles. Just a guess but I think allowing the engines to run a couple of minutes unloaded when cold and common-sense riding is responsible. Enjoy your well-deserved break Stuart and Happy Holidays to you and yours!

I have a 350 classic in red, too. Picked one up last spring. This is easily the most reliable bike I've ever owned. I've had a total of 5 REs, this being the 5th.
I have this one and a 2008 bullet remaining. The bullet is actually in my profile pic behind me.
I have a sentimental attachment to the 08, so I won't sell. But, as far as reliability, these two bikes are worlds apart unsurprisingly.
I can't see parting with either. When I first saw the 350 in red, it reminded me of an old BSA with that color scheme. It's such a gorgeous bike. Unlike the 08, I know I can go into the garage, and it'll start right up. Also, it is so comfortable to ride, and the low center of gravity makes it very easy to manage.
Happy Christmas and New Year! I'm looking forward to the spooky story on Friday. All the best!

They should have hydraulic valve adjustment and belt drive to eliminate 2 major services.Old Hondas and Triumph had easy to adjust valves with simple to remove valve caps for easy access to the valves without taking the gas tank off. My Sportster just needs the fluids and filters changed.

@@CosmicSeeker69 My Sportster was 1 1/2 years old and it cost me $7,000 in 2000. I have had my Sportster for 25 years and 400,000 miles on the original engine and 37 back tires and 17 front ones and 3 belts in 25 years. Today you can get a good used Sportster for $1,600-$3,500 with low mileage. I have shops mounted tires that's it. Used RE 350 are going for bargain prices. Let's see how many engine rebuilds your 350 will go through in 25 years. If you still even have it. Think about how many chains and sprockets replacement costs in 400,000 miles compared to 3 drive belts . No expensive dealer serviceing either. They are counting on people who are too lazy to do valve adjustment themselves and taking it to the dealership for tune ups. They had hydraulic valve adjustment on the 500,less maintenance for the rider.

I decided in March that i was going to buy a new GoldStar or an Interceptor i took both out for a test ride and liked both but looking at the service intervals on both and being a mechanical lightweight i decided on the BSA. It's first service interval was 500 miles, longer than the RE and it only cost me £100. My next service is in September next year and then BSA will cover its warranty for another 2 years, I also believe the valve's don't have to be checked until 20k. Overall much better than the RE.

All other warranty issues on the Himalayan were granted and done pretty quick. ABS sensor, head bearings, speedometer. My classic 500 touch wood has no issues after 4 years. Good morning Stuart, I've had my Classic 350 since the beginning of July, I've done 3,500 miles so far with no issues whatsoever, I've done all my own servicing right from the start with genuine parts and oil from the dealer that I bought it from, so they know I've been using genuine stuff should I ever have a warranty claim ,but they have no issues with me doing my own maintenance anyway.
As for enjoyment of the bike I have two other bigger capacity bikes that I enjoy but , neither of which give me the feeling or connection I get from riding my classic, it's just so relaxing to ride and takes your mind to another place, it's so therapeutic it's weird!
I've fitted pannier frames, Lomo side bags and a dry bag for my tent and I'm all set for camping weekend's and rallies that I do, as well as just buggering off out for rides in general.
    Great video review again 👍
    Cheers

Morning Stewart. Servicing is something you touched on before I recall. When my first service came up in my RE 650 SM went into a shop I trust. £139 it cost and was in the shop for less than two hours before I got a text saying she's ready. The engin had less tappet noise. I noted the clutch had been adjusted and the throttle response was better. Once my girl was back in the garage I did a quick check for leaks as you do. That's when i noticed the chain had been adjusted and chain wax lub applied. Then the real surprise. A shot of chain wax lub was visible on the side and center stands on the moving parts. The type of service you'd get only at a 5-star Honda dealership, so very pleased with there work. That said my brother-laws mate who bought the 350 RE Hunter had a bit of a shock. His first service £220..! So I guess servicing still depends on a shop location and it's size?
Wishing you and your family a very Happy Christmas sir. And all the best in seeing your channel grow in 2024! Safe cruising till next time Stewart 😊👍.

My biggest gripe with these and it seems like everyone that post videos on these has had the same problems. I had less than 600 miles when my speedo on my 2023 REC 350 started going bonkers. I am fairly certain that the problem is with a heat build up expanding the spring mech in the speedo.
My dealer is 3.5 hrs away and I don't want to haul it out and leave it for who knows how long. I tried insulating the light case, and actually fabricated an air dam that directs the cool air up into the light case. I also put an LED to help cool it off. So now it takes a little longer for the heat to build up and send the needle into mach 3. There should be a recall on this since it is potentially dangerous to not know the actual speed you are traveling at.

I did my own oil changes but planned to do the oil changes on at least a year to max of 2 year intervals .. That 6 months is absurd, the oil will be good inside the engine for at least two years if you are not done the distance. Happy holidays, uncle Stu

Just on the warranty claim point - I has the steering head bearings go on my Himalayan at 9 months/4200 miles. The dealership raised the warranty claim then basically did nothing to follow up on it, I ended up contacting Royal Enfield directly and they got it sorted within a week after that point. A RE employee actually called me directly within an hour or so of me using the contact form on their website, overall I was impressed.
My one point of contention with the short service intervals is if you aren't well off enough to have a garage at home then opening up the rocker cover every 3k miles is not ideal with British weather. Enfields are supposed to give affordable and convenient motoring - if you're using one as a daily driver the service intervals can limit the mileage you can do if you're at the mercy of the elements when it comes to workshop space.

Stu, I'm a Meteor 350 owner, a sister J engine machine, so I'll comment. I knew that, as a retiree, if I wanted to get back into motorcycling, then I'd have to do most of my own maintenance. One, I do it to save money; if I paid someone else to do all the routine stuff, I couldn't ride. Two, the dealer is too far away; we're talking 45 minutes, one way, to get there. Then, you need to have a way back. Three, the dealer was so backed up with work that, the last time I checked, you were looking at a two month wait just to get your bike INTO their shop! To put it another way, when I asked the service manager if he could print out the valve clearances for me, he happily did so. He was relieved that there was one less consumer adding to his already heavy workload.
As you said, no one buys a bike like the Classic or the Meteor because they want a speedster. At my age, I don't need or want a speedster. In addition to being dangerous, speed costs money! I'm sure you've heard the old racer's saying: speed costs money; how fast do you want to go? No, 60-70 mph is quite fast enough for me. I don't know why RE went to the trouble of limiting the J series bikes though; given their weight and horsepower numbers, they would top out at 75-80 if ungoverned. That's no biggie though, as I don't ride much faster than 60 most of the time these days. I love the handling, the secure ride, the maneuverability, and how these bikes sip fuel. All in all, they're GREAT bikes!

Same experience with the speedometer…after a couple months of waiting for the warranty replacement, the dealer bought the replacement speedometer, which they received in a few days and had me back in business in short order.

Interesting information about carrying out owner maintenance, dealer rates are now topping £100 per hour including the VAT, pretty steep for oil changes and so on. Good advice about recording in the log book and keeping receipts, good video. Regards, Tim Gibbs.

Have an excellent dealer service at Groombridge Heathfield in Sussex and reasonably priced too. Could easily do my own service but happy to support the dealer appreciate the customer service and favours free loan bike perks and always get healthy discounts on bike purchases. They need to earn a living and some payback too. It’s a keeper and had no issues at all thus far ☺️

I usually do my own basic maintenance ... the 650 Interceptor is old school valve adjustment.... a bit of a pain to do as opposed to my Xs650's... my 500 Bullet is hydraulic .... Yes !... and my old Ducati's are the only bikes I don't do valve adjustments simply because I don't have the shims...they go to the dealer. The only issue I've had on the Interceptor... in Ravishing Red ! .. was the rear master cylinder.... which was replaced under warranty. I'm lucky in that my dealer allows me to do basic maintenance.... even the master cylinder.. in his work shop area parking lot. He's always busy and the shop still gets filter and oil payment. I'm very pleased both machines. :)

    Hi
Thank you for the lovely pictures in this video.
This time I own a KTM 390 Adv, cause of my hight.
But I drive it the same way as you do with the Classic 350.
Maybe I buy one if the situation on the dealer side in Germany becomes much better.
Merry christmas and a happy new year from germany.
    btw.: always stay above

On the speedo issue from a SoCal rider. Mine went wonky, took it to the local dealer and they ordered the part the same day. It came in about 2 weeks later. I took it back over and it was replaced while I waited. On maintenance I am having the Hitchcock's Cam being installed right now. My guy is doing it for the standard valve adjustment price of $675. All of the RE dealers here in SoCal are also Ducati dealers so we get soaked for the commensurate labor rates. Before anybody says anything I was a racing mechanic at the local track for 6 years and also spent time on the Honda AMA team so yeah I can easily do anything on the bike but at my age I just want to ride. I have 3k miles on her and would recommend it to anybody that asks. Merry Christmas Stu!

Great video thanks. I'm still trying to decide between a 350 classic or BSA Gold Star 650 as a second bike, as I really want a single with that classic look and feel.

I think I will bring "Dude, Where's My Horse" to my weekly jam session next week. In my life, working on bikes and cars to repair them, or to keep them running at their best, is half the fun. Although, I do admit, there have been one or two occasions when a bad word has been uttered when I've been temporarily stumped by some mechanical issue. A wrench may have gone flying a couple of times.

l believe DIY is all part of the ownership experience..back in Ye Olden days adjustments/spanner work was the norm. Tappets, 'points', brakes, chain...sometimes two if pre-unit..plus various, depending on make/model..There is a certain satisfaction involved ....Even now sixty years later l still do what l can.

I have classic 350 for more than a year now, currently odometer hit 8500 Kms .....never had any issue till now....just replaced the spoked wheels with alloy ones.....I prefer the looks of spoked wheels but puncture anxiety was stopping me to have long rides and alloys can be fitted with tubeless tyres....so I changed it.....but from RE there is no issues regarding their services here in India.

A big thank you and a happy Christmas to you from me uncle Stu, as I’ve said in the past I really enjoy your ‘ghost’ stories 👍🏻 now for owning a royal Enfield, I have owned from new a Himalayan and are now p/ex-ing for a Moto Guzzi why well there are a few things, 1.under powered 2. Quality (built to a price)3. Parts from India (can be a good thing as well)overall I’ve enjoyed the royal Enfield experience but it’s the little things such as poor dealer network, parts from India, poor quality items, paint and fittings don’t seem to last in real life environment also the misting of the clocks also happens on the Himalayan.
At the time I made the right choice but it’s time for something new😉 Caio for now, Feliz Navidad 👍🏻

Hi Stu, now that the 350 is run in and the DNA filter is fitted how does the performance compare to the Classic 500? When you tested the Hunter you said that you have a standard test for climbing that long hill. How do the two classics compare climbing that hill?

Hello uncle Stu, did the replacement of the speedometer affect the odometer reading. Sorry if you mentioned it, and I missed it. Perhaps if Royal Enfield offered this as an official recall with stock available, it would have been a better experience.

Thanks for the vlog and all your knowledge about the 350
I have a question and am in the USA originally from South Wales UK and have been looking for a 500 Classic and have finally come across one a blue 500 Classic which looks mint with 2300 miles on it
My issue is price and value
It is a 2016 and since this bike has been discontinued and there are not many coming up for sale I’m at a loss as to what to offer
This particular bike is private sale and close to 4 k Firm US
I’ve been doing my nut trying to find comparisons with no success
I understand that there are loads of variables and to my eye it seems to look great sound great etc
I am 75 and downsizing to a more manageable bike and have been on two wheels on and off 60 years
Any input would be much appreciated
    Regards from Florida

I thought I recommended a fix for you when you mentioned the issue... because I had an issue with the speedo and it had to do with a moisture issue with the connectors just disconnect the speedo and blow it out and put dielectric grease on the connectors and button it back up and I have not had an issue.

That's a really helpful video. I've been umming and ahhing for a bit but now I've made up my mind. Oddly, I've always preferred the shim and bucket systems when doing the valve clearances as I don't have much experience with the locknut types
