It's a mutation that makes their hindlimbs (legs) more similar to their forelimbs (wings) and depending on how strongly it's expressed it also affects the proportions of the leg bones. It goes from just fuzzy legs to basically full wing feathers. It's really interesting! Those more extreme forms don't really show up among feral pigeons, because the long leg feathers are a survival disadvantage on the streets. But sometimes I see one with just the short fluff all the way down to its toes, and they seem to be doing fine.

Pigeons love being petted about anywhere, they really are better than parrots who you have to pet in a specific area or they'll get angry. I think more people need to realise just how great of a pet pigeons can be, if you're looking for a pet bird they're simply the best.
They are colourful and so friendly, they are right there to be wonderful little friends, but instead people choose to commit to moody toddlers with dangerous beaks and claws for more years than they probably have left to live- and they probably don't even accommodate them accurately. It's such a shame
@@inkedfeathers7834 Or you just can't really buy them in some places, and parrots can also just be a better pet for someone else, rather than a pigeon. Everyone has different tastes..... but I have to agree with the toddler part (My birds drive me mental and I love them anyway)
I would happily adopt a pigeon. Would also need to find them a couple bricks though. They *love* bricks, it reminds them of the rocky cliffs that were their natural habitat. Also, the reason parrots get angry if you pet them in the wrong place is because they see it as a sign you want to mate. In other words… you’re blue-balling your parrot.
When I was younger my mother and I went to a second hamd store. While walking around I hear "Hello?" I was young and dumb so I followed the voice. I found the owners Cockatoo. His name was Casper. I got to sit there for an hour cuddling and petting this bird. Good childhood memories
For parrots this is true, but with pigeons it's quite a bit different! These guys are always in a mating mood, no matter the season or the stimulation. Discouraging or punishing this sort of bonding can lead to aggression or even internal difficulties when it comes to pigeon hens - who lay two eggs each month.
@@lizziehn5928 Hi Well, the channel "the crazy pigeon lady" begs to differ. She has plenty of educational videos of how to handle pet pigeons and this information to not stimulate their backs comes from one of her plenty education vids. Maybe check some out for yourself Cheers
I was looking for this comment- Thank you for calling it out. More people need to be educated on how to appropriately pet birds, and I appreciate you spreading that info.
Idk anout your country, but for me, keeping over 30 pairs of pigeons (including fancy pigeons) cost around 50 bucks each month, yes the pigeon themselves are expensive but they return that somehow, i highly recommend getting one from a shelter
Yes All birds are expensive But pigeons are less expensive as compared to parrots Here are some basic necessities: 1. Biggest cage you can buy/build 2. Natural bird-safe perches (untreated wood) 3. Grit (pigeons need to digest the food) 4. Lots of shredding, plucking, and foraging bird toys in the cage 5. Stands (optional) 6. Suitable lifestyle
Pigeons are kinda kess expensieve but this pigeon is a fancy pigeon this one will be expensieve to keep Expensieve pigeons are the one who has fur in their legs less expensive pigeons are the one who doesn't have fur in their legs btw their mainly grey and black
Thank You Jana....all videos of your precious Cricket are greatly appreciated. I search Y/T every evening after I get home from work for the sweet, vocal feathered white dove of peace.
I watch this angel coz he reminds me of my Pigeon... I had a pair of pigeons when I was in school... Unfortunately the female one was taken away by a cat... But my boy was with me for a long time... He used to fly around and come back in the evening... Once we all had to go somewhere for a long time, and that probably made him think that we've left permanently... I'd left enough food, but he didn't come back.. before that he had gone away (probably lost his way), but came back after about 3 months... I was hoping that he would come back again but that didn't happen... He was an angel... Extremely intelligent... We had developed a way of communicating... I relate a lot with your content...
I love how he looks like he’s wearing bell bottoms
