100% Agree with your review. I feel like so many tech reviewers are giving GoPro a pass on the accessory money grab, and permanent lens. Thanks for calling it how it is, EverydayDad! 👍
IF I had to choose between getting all the extra features, including ones that dont matter to me and compromising on the final cost or specs, and choosing to have less at a lower price or better specs, then I will choose the latter over the former every time. I can choose to not buy the addons and pay the subscription for cheaper accessories and unlimited storage (which is what I need, not the "insurance" they offer) for a reasonable sub-price. The only bit I don't like is the compromise on being water-tight in order to attach the addons, even if you dont plan to take it into the water, that protection is necessary in poor weather where something could creep its way inside. For every person whose opinion is to agree, it is another opinion to disagree. Doesn't make either more correct. Everyday Dad says himself that he has his own priorities in an Action Camera. for me, a front screen is useless because it will never point at my face so I have no need for a framing screen and as the camera will attach to my head, I have bigger worries than a damaged lens in a situation that can crack it. The hero 8 seems built for those who opted not to get the 7, rather than those who would upgrade religiously with each new product. The Hero 9 is likely to be the next game changer for GoPro and it will be interesting to see what they come up with for that (hopefully perfect watertightness regardless of mods or not) My Hero 8 came cheaper than the OSMO Action, which decided it easier for me since I can't guarantee either in Low-light conditions.
Go-Pro had me, Hero 5 & Hero 7 Black, but they were both less than reliable, both completely failing in less than a year (of light use). so they lost me. And with this review, I know I am missing nothing new. Next 'Action camera' will be the Osmo Action. I already have the Osmo pocket and it has been totally reliable with almost daily use.
I had the cheap Gopro back in the day of forgotten things lol I guess it was named just "GoPro Hero." Failed after few videos and never got it back from the repair.
hmmmm there's some misinformation here at 3:00. Yes, DJI offers 4k 100Mb but it is in h.264 whereas GoPro's 75Mb (using pro mode) is in h.265. HEVC (h.265)is a newer file compression format which basically gives the same quality in a smaller file size. The question here is whether GoPro has adopted the same older file format as DJI's or it has improved the h.265 file format. I hope you can make it clear here for us. Thanks!!
I used the GoPro hero 7 as a vlogging camera in the past and the mic was its biggest weakness. So really looking forward on how the microphone mod performs. Will you be testing the mods?
GoPro has a trade in deal where you get $100 off, making the GoPro Hero 8 Black only $299. Just trade in any old digital camera (working or not) that was originally worth $100 or more... I’ve got a few of those lying around...

The camera is done! I don't get it....It's called an Action Camera for a reason: it needs to be robust and have the capability to have replacement parts on site, just in case! They basically innovated backwards: removed the capability of replacing lens, increased the size just to had mount feet that are clumsy and unstable, removed the ability to use the protective frame, added one single huge door that needs to be opened, with battery exposed, when you need to use the camera powered with a powerbank...I just don't get it!...

@@realpicproductions1269 I absolutely love it. I've used it now for two of my videos and it has worked perfect. Even the buttons are easy to use, on the GoPro you had to push and hold that button on the side the power it off especially if the voice control didn't work or you just didn't want to sound like an idiot yelling at your GoPro to turn off in front of people but on the osmo all I do is touch the button up top once and it Powers off, super easy to use and I don't adjust colors much in production because I'm not that talented and my videos come out looking pretty good. This is the most honest comparison review on gopro8 vs osmo action. To get popup screen on gopro, you will need to pay $560 + tax ($399.99 gopro8 + $79.99 media mod + $79.99 display mod) and it will be burky. You can get Osmo Action for $329 and DJI has released the external audio adapter for $39.
And then it's not an action camera but a vlogging camera and I already have the far better Osmo pocket for that, and with an Akaso V50 Pro for action stuff (motorbike, so I don't need super duper stabilization). Two cameras for less than one Go-Pro 8 (that given my experience with Go-Pro won't last a year!).

Awesome review, honest and practical. Like apple, Gopro seems to try to lock us into buying more and more of their products. I think by being so greedy, they will lose a lot of their customers. Thanks for your work :-)
At first i was shocked about the non-removeable lens cover too on the hero 8 but then i realized i actually prefer it since im always using the dive cases with my action cameras so when i take the the camera out of the dive case to change the battery or sd-card or charge the camera on the go, i expose the lens to all kinda dirt and damage since the hero 7 and dji action goes into a dive case only without the lens cover. The hero 8 goes into the dive case with the lens cover on. But i feel yall pain there with the new design 😬
Great Review. I have the GoPro 7, DJI Action (still in a box) and the Hero 8 on order. I think the stabilization from what I have seen is still better on the Hero 8 vs the DJI action. I also think for vlogging the Hero 8 will be a better option even if you have to pay more. As far as I know, the DJI action doesn't have an external mic capability yet. Another point is even in your video, the skin colors look much better on the Hero 8 than they do with the Action.
So before this video I was thinking "Ok, it's either the Hero 8 or Hero 7 Black" as I hadn't even considered the DJI. Now I'm thinking it's down to the DJI and Hero 7 Black!!! I can't believe I've completely written off the Hero 8. Great review! Can you tell me if there is still the huge delay on the DJI front screen or did DJI ever release a firmware update to improve this?
Same here. All these years I was using GoPro for my travels, vloggs etc but yesterday I bought DJI osmo and so far I'm very happy, also got it from price discount so I paid (after conversion) around 240$? It's great little cam and built in mic is so much better than any GoPro I had. No joke!
Here in aus the osmo action is currently discounted to 400 aud which is about $273 us. I could try and get an h8 black through the trade up system using my old broken gp session which would only be $300 usd. However, that would require shipping my old one back to the us and having the new cam shipped over here and aside from the wait, the added costs would start to get a bit pricey. Plenty of people trying to offload their "old" hero 7 blacks to upgrade and i have seen those for 400 as well so I'm tempted to go that route. Full price tho i just think there's no way to justify spending that much more for the gp. I think the lack of removable lens cover on the h8b is a huge huge misstep and pushes me towards a used h7 or an osmo action and currently I'm leaning towards a nice new product considering action cameras can be subject to rough treatment. Appreciate this video.
Thanks Dad! The skin tone is a real consideration for people like us in the UK because more often than not, it’s cloudy and I noticed that ‘waxy’ over saturated look on the Hero 7 when the sun comes out ...... Another GP advantage is the flat profile with dial in colour temp or native. Not sure how that works on the Osmo.
Not sure if you noticed but in your side by side comparisons the hero 8 is killing it in both picture and audio. Its crazy how noticeable the audio is when you switch. So much better with go pro. The picture is way sharper and vibrant on the go pro. I've never seen such a dramatic difference.
Since the lens on the go pro is the most forward protrusion, it gets the impact from hits, scraps, and face drops. My hero seven got so nicked up and always I would replace the lens when it got bad. To not have that option anymore.....disappointing.
Been using osmo action for a week now. Coming from hero 3-I must say: I love the touch screen, but when I have underwater case on, I really miss physical buttons :D
14:00 now I see why you're always wearing a hat 🤣 Jokes aside great review! I have the GPH B7. Hate the new one doesn't have the replaceable lens as well.
Thanks for your video, it’s narrowing down my next choice of vlog/action cam. Question: what are going to be upcoming competitors for the Dji action that I can look forward to?
Great review, thank you! I agree with you: I have the Hero 7 Black and dropped it while bicycling in Belgium. When I got back to my hotel room, I simply replaced the cracked lens cover with a new one ($19.99) and voila! This ain't the case with the Hero 8 Black, and again I agree: I don't like having to invest in additional gear to protect my lens cover, or GoPro's insurance plan (WTH?!). I was thinking that if I ever bought another action cam, it would be the Osmo Action, which has a replaceable lens cover, and I also like the front screen as well for framing video/photos. Thanks again for an excellent review!
Asked GoPro chat and they confirmed that neither the display mod nor the (required) media mod will be water resistant/proof, nor is the camera when using them. That's a serious +1 for DJI if the front facing camera is something you're wanting for more "action camera" oriented stuff. (Am GoPro fanboy; this was hard to admit)
Great comparison. I have been looking at the new Hero 8 for making youtube videos. But the lack of the front facing camera has continued my search. I like the features of the DJI and think it will fit my needs. Great for my videos & action when I need it. Do you know if they will be releasing a second version anytime soon? Thanks
Dang, the audio is comparable between the two so that means the 8 has taken a step backwards in audio since the 7 was so solid and much better than my osmo. I gotta say the last osmo update made me like it more than I used to. Still wish they would get rid of the lag. Does the new 8 have lag now?
Are you going to do a GoPro Max review? I’m in need of a waterproof camera for a upcoming trip but I’m not sure if I should get the Max to also have a 360 camera or just get a regular action camera
I saw another review where they contacted Go-Pro and asked how much a lens would be to replace. Go-Pro said they wouldn't replace the screen it would be cheaper to buy a new camera.
At 9mins I think the GoPro looks more vivid a little blown on the colour, the OSMO is more natural on colour as it naturally is. I use the OSMO action so like it a lot. I think also that one day we may get a vivid setting in firmware updates. You heard it hear first 😆
Hero 8 has better a better image, audio, and stabilization. If your worried about the lens the get a screen protector or protective housing and if your worried about being able to see yourself buy the add on screen when it comes out.
Love the review Gary I was close to buying the Oslo, however ended up getting a 40% discount off the GoPro Hero 8... So it was a no brainer for me :) - I don’t mind the interface on the GoPro, I haven’t used the one on th Osmo though :) as always, hey from Australia mate...
Hey dad. You haven't shown footages in 4k 60fps on GoPro. Does it have "linear" mode for 4k 60fps? And what about filters? If it possible to put some on GoPro 8?
The only thing about GoPro I thought was better, was the audio. The DJI sounded muffled. But I don't think the GoPro was 100 plus dollars better for any of it.
@@SeanOzz Why worry, it means the original will be available for less. If you already have one, there is no law saying you have to upgrade (although tell that to Apple users!).
Although I don't have any action camera but I have trick for GoPro 8 removable lens protector, I think it's good if we buy an additional lens glass of hero 7 n stick it on 8 .. I think that would help in advance
I'm trying to get rid of that wobble caused by the stabilisation. And you said that "high settings" suppresses that, what do you call "high settings" please? Great review btw

Not sure if you noticed but in your side by side comparisons the hero 8 is killing it in both picture and audio. Its crazy how noticeable the audio is when you switch. So much better with go pro. The picture is way sharper and vibrant on the go pro. I've never seen such a dramatic difference.
I called it last video I knew this video was coming lol good video and Awesome shirt.
Osmo looks muddy
That's the video I've been looking for.
I need to see the Hero 8 vs Action 3...
How's the battery life compare? Can either be hard-wired for power?
I see it does have 4K linear but that not removable window is a bummer.
The osmo action is also an awesome camera
The Everyday Dad oh yeah! Loving it! 😅
@@TheEverydayDad I'm heading to Antarctica for work. Should I buy an osmo or go pro 8? Go bucks!
Thank you for this video. I've been comparing both and this has helped tremendously!
14:00 now I see why you're always wearing a hat 🤣
Jokes aside great review! I have the GPH B7. Hate the new one doesn't have the replaceable lens as well.
Fishme7 don’t like the idea about the batteries either...they fit but not in an ideal manner neither about the accesorios not fitting the 8
Thanks for your video, it’s narrowing down my next choice of vlog/action cam.
Question: what are going to be upcoming competitors for the Dji action that I can look forward to?
Is that a R or an A? Not that there is anything wrong with that.
The GoPro Hero 8 is now 100 dollars cheaper. I'm sure you've seen that by now.
Thanks for another great review. You are a huge help in making me decision!!!
Oh yeah. The attached lens cover is stupid and the new attachment.
Are you going to do a GoPro Max review? I’m in need of a waterproof camera for a upcoming trip but I’m not sure if I should get the Max to also have a 360 camera or just get a regular action camera
0:50 I am an adult too but I wish I can buy WHATEVER I want 😭
I saw another review where they contacted Go-Pro and asked how much a lens would be to replace. Go-Pro said they wouldn't replace the screen it would be cheaper to buy a new camera.
At 9mins I think the GoPro looks more vivid a little blown on the colour, the OSMO is more natural on colour as it naturally is. I use the OSMO action so like it a lot. I think also that one day we may get a vivid setting in firmware updates. You heard it hear first 😆
Thanks for taking the time to do this video. Much appreciated.
Cool ! I like the GoPro but its to hot to hold after 20 minutes!!
Same chipset. Come on gopro what you up to. Give the 7 black firmware updates
very very helpful, thank you! But on a side note, linear field of view is already available on the hero4 silver
Hero 8 has better a better image, audio, and stabilization. If your worried about the lens the get a screen protector or protective housing and if your worried about being able to see yourself buy the add on screen when it comes out.
Love the review Gary
I was close to buying the Oslo, however ended up getting a 40% discount off the GoPro Hero 8... So it was a no brainer for me :) - I don’t mind the interface on the GoPro, I haven’t used the one on th Osmo though :) as always, hey from Australia mate...
Como obtener descuento?
Perfect review mate. Thanks
Thanks so much!
Great review! made me decide what to buy between GP8 and DJI Osmo.
Which one is your choice?
@@rafid6419 we bought the Osmo action. We'll give it a try. 😊
How can we add an ND filter to that flat front lens? I like my screw on nd filters on the Osmo but it loses its waterproof ness. Hmm
thanks for the review :) il be going with the osmo action
Hey dad. You haven't shown footages in 4k 60fps on GoPro. Does it have "linear" mode for 4k 60fps? And what about filters? If it possible to put some on GoPro 8?
4K 60 linear is possible, but 4K 60 linear with hypersmooth is not... yet? Firmware updates coming soon.
GPH 8 is cool but expensive. Which is better for underwater, Osmo Action or GPH black 7? Thanks!
Great review!! Thank you🙌🏽
100% agree with you, I’ll stay with the Osmo Action
same!
good stuff man. hero 8 is my first gopro ever and im glad i waited haha. i love it
Not all heroes wear capes. This is an excellent review/comparison.
Ha! Maybe I should get a cape though.
The only thing about GoPro I thought was better, was the audio. The DJI sounded muffled. But I don't think the GoPro was 100 plus dollars better for any of it.
Thanks Mate. You made my decision so much easier. I'm going for DJI OSMO ACTION.
Uffffff OSMO action v2 is coming soon just got off the phone with DJI's very own C.O.O
Jeez man. I hope not yet. The original isn't even a year old.
@@SeanOzz Why worry, it means the original will be available for less. If you already have one, there is no law saying you have to upgrade (although tell that to Apple users!).
Really? When? I’m waiting here before I click the place order button.
Any announcement or rumor on the web?? Please share
DJI OSMO 360 is around the corner. The Fusion killer.
Hey buddy, in my last video I choose the hero 7 over both and the reason was the delay of the rocksteady stablizing system, what do u say about that?
How many GoPro lenses has Dad broken over the years?
I should mention taking a serious fall in the French Alps. I had a choice, save me or the camera. I won.
@@philgray1023 if a cam takes enough damage to break lense, there might be other damage as well.
After reviewing your video I would go for the DJI Osmo because I find it better overall.
