A trip to my old Mum's home. She was from Sandown and I spent many a summer holiday on the Island visiting family. All 3 uncles drove "Southern Vectis" busses there for a while. I remember when the steam engines ran - before the old underground trains took over. Haven't been in eons, so maybe next time I'm back in Blighty, I'll take a day or two over there. BTW - my family used to own the only windmill still standing - now an NT property, I believe.
Yes, the one at Bembridge. My mother's family lived on George St, Sandown. During the war, my mother worked at Marvins in Cowes (they are still there, unbelievably) and my dad was in the "Wavy Navy" billeted close by...
Hi Gary - Yes, it is a real privilege to be able to fly - funnily enough I'm planning on flying her to Spain in June (watch this space!). Don't really talk in mpg terms - she flies on 40 litres of fuel an hour and cruises at 115 knots (145ish mph)...it depends on the wind as to what "economy" you get.....
So you can have the other hand free to operate the throttle, prop and carb heat levers (amongst others....) not to mention write down frequencies and transponder codes, change the altimeter pressure settings, tweak the VORs, dial up frequencies on the radios, adjust the DI, etc, etc (you get the picture!)

Hi Andrew - was the windmill the one at Bembridge? ....been there many times (and it is indeed now a National Trust property).....

OK, time to display my ignorance. Why one-handed?
