  • Telling a good story and making it really interesting can be hard! If you just list all the things that happened, people will soon get bored and stop listening. But if you add in background details and description, and create some suspense or surprise, then you can keep everyone hooked right to the end! And that's where narrative tenses - the past simple, past continuous, past perfect and past perfect continuous - come in. Learn how in just two minutes in this lesson!

In the morning, when I entered the kitchen - I smelt something strange? It was definitely the gas out of the oven.
Someone had forgotten to turn off the oven knob last night. Thankfully, the exhaust fan in the kitchen had been running the whole night, so the gas didn't fill up the kitchen. It was a narrow escape!

Great work @lifeunderlockdown5581! You've used these tenses well and your story is very clear. The only one I might change is 'the gas didn't fill up the kitchen'. It's certainly possible, but you could also say 'the gas hadn't filled up the kitchen'. One other change is to time expressions. You said 'last night', but it's not last night any more. It's better to change that for 'the night before'. But apart from these two small points, great job!

Hi @kaykhinekyaw1224, well done! You've used the tenses correctly in these sentences, so that's a great start. There are a few things you need to pay attention to in other parts of the sentences though:
      1) I saw my ex colleague at somewhere in downtown. This is a bit of a difficult area - prepositions. You see someone or something somewhere, not AT somewhere. Don't use any preposition with somewhere - it's an adverb. Downtown is the same - no preposition.
      2) we had worked before pandemic period - I think you mean we had worked together here.
      I hope that helps!

    the last flght
It was 2013, I had to fly from san Luis Potosi to Atizapán, Everything was beautiful there was no turbulence, no clouds, I had arrived early at the airport to gas filled the airplane and had been waiting for the passengers not so long, I had made my fly plan and all the pre-fly , finally , the passengers arrived we got in the small aircraft, the control tower authorized the fly, and we take off without incident, we were flaying towards Atizapán, while we in our course, we try to had known how the trafic near to the airport and sound like just one school airplane was working doing "touches and go", so I decided to ask to the control tower instructions for landing in such airport, they had authorized to land at the runway 22, I rejected because the slope , then I requested to land in runway number 4, the control tower accepted, but suddenly the controller told us unable to land because there were dogs at the run way, It was a tough landing I couldn´t land in the runway, and all surrounding were mountains and small towns, and unfortunately the airplane got a power engine failure, So I had had to land the aircraft without power at the small hill next to airport , it had caused some damage to the plane and some menor injuries to the passengers including me, finally the security from the airport and municipality rescued us, but I had known lost the job.

Hi @jorgeespinosa8550, great story - full of exciting description and lots of suspense! You also used a lot of good vocabulary and used narrative tenses correctly a lot of the time. There are a few things you should look at though - here are some:
      - I had arrived early at the airport to gas filled the airplane ....: I think the word you want here is to 'refuel' the plane.
      - I had made my fly plan and all the pre-fly... the control tower authorized the fly...: your narrative tenses are good, but be careful of vocabulary/spelling. It should be flight plan, pre-flight and authorized the flight. All of these are nouns not verbs.
      - we take off without incident, we were flaying... : very good vocabulary, 'without incident' but careful with the tense - we took off - and spelling 'we were flying'
      - while we in our course ... this could be we were on our way, en route, in flight etc. but not 'in our course'
      - they had authorized to land at the runway 22...: this should be past simple because you are telling the events in order: you requested, you rejected, they authorized us to land etc.
      - because ... the slope: you need of after because here
      - had had to land ... had caused: these would be past simple too.
I hope that's useful for you Jorge!
      Neil
