I have 2 newer versions of Black & Decker electric screwdrivers, that are already on LI Ion and a Bosch ixo 4 electric screwdriver an older version, one of the first versions with LI Ion power supply, and they are super ok for activities that require low speed and torque .

Haha :) Once I made the same kind of mistake with hot glue in the USB conector. Charging board you used has no battery protection circuit. I will not prevent under charging or overloading for example. The other one you have got has this feature, hence extra chip and connectors on the USB type C one. Plus and Minus connectors beside USB socket can be used instead of USB, so you didn't really need to dremel out that hole. You could just drill a little hole to see your favourite blue LED. It was fun to watch, thanks :)
This is really helpful and has reversed my decision to throw away my B&D HP9048 Type 1 which is still like new but flat as a pancake. It is a 4.8 volt screwdriver so as I'm no electrician could you advise what the best batteries and charging circuits I should use when I upgrade it? Ideally I would like to use a USB charger as you do. Thanks.
Those Nickel batteries are wired in, and sometimes can be upgraded to Lithium, but I just put a small wire-leg resistor/cap/diode unit on it, and the SAME BATTERY lets it keep the charge…

You could have soldered the dc plug to the circuit board input instead of using the usb. You could still solder the dc plug to the board and have to two ways to charge it.
@@MyPlayHouse I think Scott meant that you would wire the DC in jack to the Input +/- of the module (that's what those solder pads you didn't understand were for). The TP4056 linear charging IC used on those modules can tolerate up to 8V input, so wiring to the DC jack with the module likely would have let you use the original charger for the power tool, as it would have cut-off current at 4.2v for you regardless of DC input used (up to ~8V)
I have the LI2000 model with a dead battery. It has a single cell in it, and I'm not sure if there's anything different about it such that it would warrant a different kind of replacement.After taking it, there's no labeling on the paper around the cell to identify it. Thoughts?

If you are using 18650 cells 3700mah is max,, everything over that is Chinese wishful thinking :-) and you will be lucky to get 10-20% of what they promise. But you can put any 18650 cells in... and better batteries gives better performances.

Hi, I did the same and have same model Black and Decker but it didn't work. I lost 3 modules already. I have no idea what is the cause of the damage. I connected all wires by given instructions. Small chip heated up and stopped working and no blue light turned on again.

While buying one with a DW01 protection IC would have been better, It's unlikely the FET controlled by the DW01 would handle the large spike in current draw from the motor, and also the DW01 is likely configured to cut load at no more than an amp or two anyways.

could not we just wire the batteries like the retail ones but have the charging pcb charge it externally through the socket that the normal adapter uses?
The original batteries are only 1,2volt each,, so they need to go in series to get up to 3,6Volt,, whereas the 18650 Li-ion cells are 3,6volt and therefor I put those to in parallel.

Unfortunately, that isn't what they are for. What you are talking about is the USB-PD spec, which those extra ICs do NOT do. The extra chips are a DW01 chip for over-discharge, over-charge, and over-current protection of the Lithium battery. The other extra chip is the FET controlled by the DW01 to switch on/off the load in the event of a fault condition mentioned above. The USB-C connector on there doesn't do anything special besides simply being a superior connector :)

There is no acid in lithium based batteries Even though there is no metallic lithium inside, water would cause lithium to catch fire. The electrolyte is alcohol based and most modern lithium batteries have no other substances in them just cathode material, anode material, separator and alcohol. Electrolyte is created with lithium and it does happen by itself.

My best estimate is about 5 hours.
USB-C can charge at 9v and 5v, that's why the extra chips on the board.
