Today we are going to visit the Monocentropus Balfour , how we care for and breed these amazing spiders and try dispel some of the myths around their care, here is how we care for ours, hopefully shed some light and give some valuable tips to all those who want to delve into the fascinating world of the Blue Legged Baboon.

Ill never own a spider. Not brave enough and I know Id kill them by accident with my own fear. So I live vicariously through your videos and other channels as well. I follow one for the feedings, another for venomous scary spiders, and yours for the information and learning aspect. I love how calmly and gentle you treat your spiders. Genuine love for the spiders!
When my son brought home his tarantula I could hardly even look at her and cold shivers whent down my spine. He left her in mine and my husband's care. Gradually I came to love Luni ( a Grammostola Rosea ) and I enjoyed her company. She was always out keeping me company sitting on top of her hide when I was in the computer room. She wasn't aggressive at all and really a sweetheart. I put my hands into her terrarium and took out her waterbowl and clean it out every morning as well as gave her fresh water. She drank often at least once or twice a week. The waterbowl was in a shape of a low rock and when she drank she first climbed up on the stone positioned her legs on the broad rim of the bowl and lowered herself down until she had her mouth touching the water and it looked both cute and funny! Afterwards she sat on her hide washing herself almost like a cat. She preferred to eat crickets but she could be a fuzzy eater and go without eating for long periods and that was normal and common for her an her specie. Luni was and are an easy going tarantula ( but she is back with our son now ) and content with what she got! She even did what we called the happy dace sometimes when she ate! I was really scared 😨 of spiders 🕷 before I got to know Luni and today I can take out a spider without freaking out completely. I don't mind them in the house either. All spiders are venomous but not all can bite through our skin. As far as I know we have spiders who can bite you in Sweden too but they usually don't bite and their venom is not medical significant or at least so I have heard. The bite can hurt though but are often the spiders last defense if you really hurt or by accident squeeze them. I could neve imagine that I should start loving a tarantula but I did and she change my attitude towards spiders from fear to respect and care! Love Susanne.
I too have to live vicariously through this channel! I have 2 cats and am in a 1 bedroom apartment that I like to keep cool. Also I know there is no way I could possibly drop crickets or whatever into the spider enclosure as I just couldn't watch them get eaten.Love this channel.my fave on YT.

@Inn3r Warri0r I can understand that too and I do like the tarantulas better than the thinner legged housespider...I find them creepier but not so scary today as I thought they were before!

Hi Dave, you helped me out on the weekend. A great huge wolf spider was in my hallway Sat night. Normally it would have gotten the heel of a shoe and a kleenex and flushed. I remembered your advice, got a tupperware bottom and a thin piece of cardboard and was able to calmly put the tupperware over it and carefully slide the cardboard underneath. It hardly even moved! I was then able to walk it out and let it loose in the bush.
I have to say I was pretty proud of myself as I'm not terrified of spiders but I really don't like them either.....until your channel. I still don't love them but it's my predjudice and they're just living their lives. So no more flushed spiders in this house. 😉🇨🇦

I think the words , be calm ,be gentle and love your spiders helps people to not panic or get scared and anxious and to understand that spiders have a right to live and hopefully those words help people to cope with catching and putting outside.

My communal is exactly the same. Once the webbing had been sprayed that’s when I see more out than ever before, popping up for a little drink. Proper cute!

Thanks for the Balfouri video Dave. My little ones are doing great and I just started seeing them out digging and webbing everything like crazy. Some really are industrious spiders. Its rewarding raising Balfouri slings and watching their colony grow and flourish.

This is probably the only OW I would ever consider. They look great, aren't known to be defensive and are relatively easy to care for. Wouldn't mind having a lone female. Thanks for covering their care throughout their growth stages, it's an eye opener.

The two slings I bought of yourself, are both doing good. I've not chose to house them together. Both have webbed up totally different from each other. I did at one point run out of small feeders for them, and pre-killed a red runner. One ate the entire thing, where the other ate half. I've given them a tiny locust each, last night, so will be checking after to see the results. It was a cool video, and I'm glad to seen your results with yours, which verifies I'm doing it correctly, but it's always good to watch for any extra tips. Keep up the awesome work.

Hey dave, the guys i got from you are doing great. Im so so so glad you mentioned about water. Even with adults love the water! Far more activity from the hydrated fellas. Even my old MM are super healthy

Great video Dave, I am definitely gonna get me a M. Balfouri communal now, not been that interested in having a communal but you changed my mind, you really keep it simple with your husbandry and I really like that. Why complicate stuff when its not necessary. Keep it simple.:)

He's right, they are thirsty little things, I've seen a group sip up a whole cap full until they were like tiny balloons. After spraying the web, I catch them sipping the water off their web. I keep mines bone dry but I do also spray the web and keep a cap or two full of water. Surprisingly though, they don't seem to go to the caps as much as it's outside of their web system or where their webs are so I'm guessing they don't feel very safe anywhere outside the webbed area. You want to keep them in a smaller container when they're little to make the scavenging easier, so that there's none that's too far and won't notice the food. Otherwise, you gotta split up the prey and see which group ate and whatnot. I got mine in a large ballot box 20 cm cube. They've split up and reunited a couple of times, the main group of 7 and the other group which was 2 is now 3. I want to see as well how they'll react once they 'reunite" but I'm thinking they already have somewhere inside the enclosure. I've also not fed them twice for 1 whole month due to inactivity or batch molting but a few days apart. They're still 1.3 inch but oooo so cute, would love to handle but I can't catch out :(

Found ours the same, they like the crickets over locust, roach. They dont mind the odd mealworm or those maggot looking worms i always forget the names off (small white things Wax worms?). But yeah crickets seem to always go down a treat.

I had hoped that one day I would be able to do about a m balfouri communal enclosure but I do not know if that is going to happen now period because of medical issues I am in the process of whittling down my collection. It is one of the hardest things I've ever had to do because I love them all so much I want to keep them all. But I will continue to live vicariously through your videos.

Balfouri are one of my favorites, though I only keep one, no communal. It's a very shy little sling, I've only seen it out of it's burrow once in so many months. At least I know for sure it's there because of the slowly growing webbing and the food being eaten haha. I'm hoping I'll get to see it more as it gets bigger.
Some are shy but they normally come round in the end , you could always try rehousing it a change sometimes does the trick 👍
@@daveslittlebeasties I took your advice and did a rehouse, it actually did help! He's still shy, but I see a lot more of him now.
1. Could you write what specific substrate you use?? 2. should the male and female for copulsion be taken out of the group and placed in separate tanks?

Very interesting video as always Dave 😊 I have a question, as I recently started my own communal balfouri communal enclosure. At what point should I switch from prekilled food to live feeders?
Are they all slings or still with the mother? As mother will kill and feed the young, or if all slings start with pinheads/small red runners and they shouldn’t have no issue.
As said below once slings they can be fed appropiet size food items 👍

Hi mate and welcome to our channel , the potency of any venom on the pokies is classed as medically significant but we all react differently to venom , best policy is dont get bitten 😂, I have been doing this for over 40 years and never been bitten yet 👍

I like the Balfouri, they are pretty, interesting and unusual.
I had a fear of spiders so I went and got one for a pet a male rose hair (Leo) he was temperamental I had to give him up cuz I moved in with my grandmother my second was a Mexican red knee (Ivy) I got her when she was really tiny she was beautiful I moved to Virginia and she passed away from a bad molt I wish I still had her
Are you certain they come up for heat? I had the impression they come up because their burrows get warm and they wanna catch a breeze. Mines hide below 73 or so but start coming out above that which led me to think what I said. Cooler temps, they're just hiding. Also, if I make it moist, seems like it'll make them want to work on their burrows a bit more.
Burrows are colder for the T :) the further they burrow the more cold their burrows get, so they can regulate by coming back up and warming up
When they congregate on the side of the enclosure where the heat is they are warming up, it’s much cooler below ground 👍
@@felixduley6809 Yeah but when they're in an enclosure where it really is just so deep, they might not get the breeze to cool them down. Our enclosures give them like 3-6" of substrate which is not much at all really, shouldn't make much of a difference in temperature either especially after a long day. The Ts don't seem to come out while the temperature is rising, but more like when it's at or near its peak. That's my thought at least. It's not the difference in temperature like a room that's facing the sun and the temperature on the table as opposed to the floor level which is 4 ft down, we're talking 3-6 inch which shouldn't make any difference. I mean, I get what you guys are saying, I'll think about it a bit.

Hey Dave, thank you for all these amazing pairing videos! I'm currently watching them atm. Also I have this one question, how do you determine a female balfouri is large enough or matured enough to mate? I have this female balfouri I've been keeping from sling for around 4 years. Last week a friend asking me if I want to breed her with their 5,5 inch matured male. Despite being a 4yo female, my balfouri is only around 4-4,5 inch leg span. She has not growing much since the last couple years. I'm not sure if I should just try to pair them despite the size difference. I'm so afraid that it might bring them harm in the process. While my friend is new to the hobby and I have only a little to no knowledge about breeding, we are not sure if mine is matured enough or their size is considered a 'okay' for pairing.
She will be mature at that size , when did she last moult ? balfouri are generally very good to pair and most of the time its trouble free 👍
