Thanks for this. I still have a working electric kitchen knife from my late mother. It's at least 50+ years old and we still use it for carving a chicken or a roast. My mother would have had fits seeing cutting foam with it.
I would not use one that old, it may be considered an antique. Just go pick one up from a department store, they are cheap enough, usually under $15 dollars.
For a one person angled cut, couldn't you line the bottom of the foam up with the edge of the table and guide it by feel while watching the top line during the cut?
We glue Dry Fast foam with 3M General Trim Adhesive. When gluing a closed cell foam use 3M Super Trim Adhesive. When gluing Polyurethane foam from Sailrite we use the 3M General Trim Adhesive or 3M Super 77 spray adhesive.
I would use a clamp to hold the knife upside down from the edge of the table and then guide the foam like you would on a band saw. I'm going to try with some memory foam.
Wonderful tutorial, straightforward, clear and concise. I just wish these videos would dispense with the background music... almost all of them do it and it's very annoying
It just occured to me that it would be interesting if youtube provided an option to have music as a second track that the view could turn on or off. I have auditory processing impairment, and the music makes it more difficult to decyper the voice instructions.
This video was very informative. I think it might now be much more worthwhile to invest in an electric kitchen knif e to things like cutting foam into shapes i want.
I have used an electric knife. But for a cut that looks like the factory edges, a band saw is best. With a band saw you can get 1/2 inch thick pieces, rounded corners, and very complex shapes. Just use very low feed speeds. A table saw works too, but needs a very sharp blade, a very slow feed, and definitely push sticks. Using a band saw, I have cut 1 inch foam slabs to use for greenhouse gaskets, contoured to fit kayak transportation pads, a soft Valentine heart, furniture cushions of complex shapes, and a variety of small packing strips to close air gaps around doors and windows. The band saw is faster than an electric knife, is more precise, and gives a far better edge surface.
I've used the electric kitchen knife at home, but always coveted your professional product (they had one where I used to work) - thought: Compress foam (clamp) before cutting with kitchen knife -
I have used an electric kitchen knife on the following types of foam: Dry Fast foam #103165, Reflex BioCide Foam #100160 and it has typically worked great. Most of our foams are not very soft.

Cool deal dude! electric carving knife works great , got one at Walmart on sale for a mere $5.00!!! And check this out, it works even better for carving turkey, hams, and roasts. Lol
@@ghousalishahsahb6859 i strongly recommand you to use an electric knife (there is some cheap kitchen electric knife to cut meat that will perfectly work). In my experience that is the best way to have a smooth finish. Best regards!
1:20 Instead of risking someones fingers why didn't you use the table edge method for the angle cut too? Line the bottom foam edge with the table top edge and just follow the line on top while making contact with the bottom table edge.
Sorry, I cannot. However, if you buy a professional foam cutter it should last for years. Here is a link: www.sailrite.com/search?keywords=foam%20cutter
Please don't be insulted by the question, but are you sure the blades were inserted properly and securely? I got my Rowenta electric knife in a thrift store... I thought I had been had until I realized my mistake. BTW it was made in China but is quite sturdy and reliable. The sticker price was $35 but I paid $8. I don't use it often, but when I need to cut foam I'm glad I have it!
+Kathy torres If it is dry fast foam, simply set the cushion on its side (if it was covered in a breathable fabric) and it will dry out in a few hours. If it is a polyurethane foam then you will have to take the foam out of the cover and set it on its side for many days until it dries out.
We have some foam cutters that we sell at this link: www.sailrite.com/search?keywords=foam%20cutter However, if you use an electric kitchen knife you will have to buy that from your local department store.
Well, the uneven edges, will probably not show up when the cushion cover is done (unless they are very bad). To solve that you can buy the Blade Foam Saw: www.sailrite.com/Sailrite-Blade-8-Foam-Cutter-with-Carrying-Case-110V
LOL...8 HOUR WAIT TIME TO WAIT FOR THE ADHESIVE TO ADHERE??? Too long a wait guys...there is upholstery glue specifically for foam you use with a spray attachment that can work with any compressor. It will hold as soon as you put the pieces together!!! Now using the electric kitchen knife is a beautiful alternative because its the same technology as these expensive foam cutters at a fraction of the cost. A Bosch foam rubber cutter retails for $538.36 and that's without the blade and footplate.
The problem with posting a price in a video is the fact that prices continue to rise year after year. The current price of the Acu-Cutter for 2019 is $255.95.
12 years down the road and just as relevant today. Love the knowledge you folks impart
This is a great video. I needed to cut foam for window seat cushions and found your tutorial. Many thanks!!

very useful for a design assignment I have to build and I do have an electric knife at home. Gave me lots of ideas. thank you from Costa Rica

Awesome tip! Worked perfectly- a nice clean smooth cut. Thanks for posting this.
Did you use one blade or two with the electric knife and what brand knife did you use?
what is the best electric knife for this? Mine has crapped out. I sharpened blades---but still does not cut anymore
Thanks for sharing this video!! Have you ever tried using an electric kitchen knife on 2 1/2" eggcrate foam? Thanks again! Great job!! 👍😊
I tried an electric knife on foam, but it wouldn't slice through it at all. What kind of foam are you using? I was using a very soft foam.
which kind of electric kitchen knife do you recommend? Do they all do the same kind of job or is one more messy than another?
Wonderful, useful, hack for the average DIY person. Good on you for making it available. Thanks.
Thank you I would of never thought of a electric kitchen knife. 😊
Is foam ever sold as a wedge-- like a bench seat-back that's wide at the bottom, narrower at the top? (You'd need a really long knife for that.)
+Crystal Burnham No, but some companies will do customer foam cutting for you. Sailrite does not do that, sorry.

You may purcahse the Acu-Cutter and foam from sailrite.com. The electric kitchen knife can be purchased at any box store including Walmart.
Cutting wedges in order to curve the foam is exactly the solution I'm looking for. Dunno why I didn't think of it! ;)
Thanks!!
I'm Tom Bodett for motel 6 and we will leave the light on for you!
What about soft foams like latex? I have a 3" thick Talalay bed topper I'd like to trim from queen to full.
Sorry, we have never sold latex foam, so we have no experience with it.

tell me, is there an opportunity to purchase this tool?
I just cut my wrist on a diagonal cut. It doesn't hurt a lot, but it's spurting out. What do you recomment?
Go to the ER.
Thanks for this. Was trying to cut 4" foam with a sawsall and it wasn't working at all. The electric knife cut thru it like butter!
Where can I buy it??
Hey wifey! I’m using the Turkey knife to cut stuff! It might not be so sharp for Thanksgiving this year! lol
Thanks for the heads up, I'll make sure to check my knife before the holiday!

Which electric knife did u use? Which brand? Which make/model #?
pretty much any brand/model will do the trick. I used to have a black and decker one that worked well enough.
Where do you get the blades for you jigsaw
what brand the kitchen knife in the video

Sounds like your foam is like our closed cell foam and yes you should be able to cut it with the electric kitchen knife well.
Sir,Hand cutting machine name please ..
Hi, will this work with rebonded foam ??
killerkork Yes, it should work with rebonded foam.
Is a good video. thanks for show the process. Sorry about my english. bye friends. Watching from Panama.
Good! But first of all I need to know sponge foams chemical composition :) What is that?
Dry fast foam is a reticulated Polyurethane foam. This PDF may help slightly: www.sailrite.com/PDF/Dry_Fast_Open_Cell_Foam_Technical_Data.pdf
TOP Thanks! I have tried so many things such as cutting with a hot blade and so on. Thanks for sharing man!

May I know if that is high density foam? If not will it be applicable to one?
That is not a high density foam. However, yes I have used an electric kitchen knife for that type of foam and it does work.
Which glue do you recommend to use on foam?
hey can I make acoustic panels with this foam

i used my walh clip to blend and smooth out the edges. awsome stuff.
I cut high density foam with a kitchen knife (cost $20). It only survived 2 cuts. Any idea what might have happened?
Okay. Thanks! Any recommended knives?

THANK YOU SOOOOOOO MUCH FOR THIS... I have been researching foam...
+Stacy Medina Glad we could help. Let us know if you have more questions.
We learned that it is generally diffycult to cut closed cell foam with an electrical machine. Use a hot wire or something instead.
