Aprilia Tuareg 660 Repaired - Missing Part from Factory

  • I purchased a 2023 Aprilia Tuareg 660 in April of 2024. During the break in mileage I noticed a small oil leak that appeared to be coming from the counter shaft seal. I took my bike into to my local dealership for the first service and for the oil leak to be evaluated. My local dealership convinced me the oil I was seeing was chain lube and not engine oil. I am not a master mechanic so I took what they were telling me on face value.
    I tried to ride my Tuareg to California to visit a friend and do a long distance trip. On the way to California the bike began to leak more and more oil as I traveled. The oil leak became so bad I had no choice but to leave the bike with Spirit Motorcycles in San Jose, CA for a warranty repair.
    The repair took two weeks which forced me to fly home waiting for the repair to be completed. Five weeks later I was able to return to San Jose to pick up the bike and ride home. The necessary repair was unexpected. It wasn't the seal but another problem that it had when it left the factory. Watch to find out what the real problem was necessitating the repair.

    Good video, thanks Matt. Just got an oil leak on my 2024 Tuareg. I do a regular oil check since I heard these were prone to oil leaks so I noticed the oil level dropping and kept it topped up. Recently I noticed oil in the skid plate so I took it off and had a look. The draining plug and oil filter were not tight. I could unscrew the oil filter by hand and the draining plug was the same. I've just tightened them up. Gonna take it out for a ride now it's cleaned up and make sure there are no more leaks.

On top of all the potential issues for you, I just wouldn’t want to be leaving a bunch of oil behind on the road for the next rider. Hello Matt, I've had my Tuareg for a year now and have put over 10,000 km on it without any breakdowns. The 2023 model is the same as yours.
    As for service and Aprilia itself, I don't have a very high opinion of them. As soon as I bought it, I checked half the engine and found a few flaws. The hand guards came loose after about 100 km, I tightened some screws on the engine, adjusted the lights correctly, and returned the spring of the rear wheel bearing seal. After those initial irregularities, I haven't found anything else to worry about.
    I solved the problem of screw breakage on the gearbox and brake by replacing them with higher quality screws. Since then I've been riding and enjoying an excellent motorcycle that is not without its flaws, but as far as I've followed, other motorcycle brands are not immune to breakdowns either, only they have better support which Aprilia lacks.
    Sorry my English is not at an enviable level, but I hope you understood what I wanted to say. Enjoy the ride and have fun!

    I’m really glad you’ve got your Aprilia going, and looking forward to seeing videos from you! I have a T660, problem free so far and absolutely love it, and have been closely monitoring FB pages for the bike. Far and away most owners experience few or no issues, the most common problem I’ve seen reported is a faulty fuel gauge in the 2022 MY, and people are taking these bikes on BDRs everywhere and the TAT. But occasionally I’ve seen problems reported on FB that sound to me like there are sporadic quality control issues at the factory, like the missing part in your engine. I’m sure Aprilia is aware of this, and may be why they have a 2 yr warranty on the bike, extendable to 4 yrs. Hope to see more videos from you soon!

    Missing parts are hard to catch for anyone that doesnt have a manual handy. Its nice to pat yourself on the back when you sucessfully fix somthing but in this case it would have turned into an ordeal and maybe led to a ADV Matt crash video. It looks like that spring washer goes first ,then flat washer ,then nut.Im not sure how that keeps shaft from moving but certainly helps keep the nut tight. Now that circlip(18) inside the seals would definitley keep the shaft from moving. I may be looking at it wrong though.

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  2 месяца назад +1

      I have been looking at it too. I think the inner diameter of the spring washer is bigger than the out put shaft. With it in place it puts tension on the counter shaft sprocket pushing it in and pulls the counter shaft out just a little. At least that is what I am thinking without tearing it apart. I have not had a bike with this configuration before. You are correct, without the cutout aheet it is hard to diagnose.

    Do you know why they over inflated your tires so much? The manual lists way lower pressures than that.

      That's crazy! I have a 24 and did my first maintenance because I don't trust these guys to even know the correct tire pressures.

      @@bretthawton I don't know why they set them so high. I noticed that high pressure as well. New tires installed, proper inflation for road and dirt now. Great catch on the pressure.

    I would have known the spring washer was missing because I would have attained that diagram you showed before disassembly. Definitely could have been fixed yourself. I'm glad it wasn't something that damaged the bike. You definitely have a good sensor of humor about it and most people wouldn't have handled it as well as you did.

      @@c0c0asauce it's pretty hard to get the cutout sheet when traveling and then get the replacement part. I have not owned a bike with this output shaft configuration. Using the cutout sheet before disassembly is great idea. Not something I have ever done.

      @@bhaz1987 I agree with you. I don't have the time to do long term travel. I can only get out a few weeks at a time. It seems perfect for that. If I was planning to ride to far etching countries I wouldn't take this bike.
