When #ladybug eggs hatch, the larvae that come out look nothing like adult ladybugs. I think they look like little alligators, but lots of people commenting think the ladybug larvae look like "facehuggers" from the Alien movies. The larvae feed voraciously on #aphids and other garden pests before they form pupas, which you can watch here. People are surprised to learn that there's cannibalism in the world of #ladybugs. The ladybug in this video is an Asian ladybug, one of 5000 species of ladybug/ladybird/lady beetle. There’s a ton of variation of color and spots, which can take days to be fully revealed.

😠 - when I put a ladybird/it’s larva on an aphid infested plant stem = the aphids started “defensively” falling off to not get eaten

The egg that got eaten by the other larvae might have been unfertilized.
Sometimes insects lay unfertilized eggs to provide food when the fertilized eggs hatch in case there's not a good food source nearby.
Can we just remember when theyre born they freak the fuck out tho....

When I was 7 I watched a ladybug hatching and nobody believed me when I said it was yellowish white and nobody believed me that the larvae and cocoons are ladybugs (we all thought it was some kind of other weird insect) and now, after 11 years, *I HAVE PROOF*

These are actually Asian lady beetles. I once had one land on my hand at work and my young students came running up to me to admire it. Then it suddenly laid an egg on my finger. We were all so amazed and I immediately started thinking about how to safely relocate it into a terrarium so the kids could observe its life cycle. Then the beetle turned around and ate the egg right in front of us. 😂 Still an interesting and educational experience!

Omg.. haha, I came here to make the same comment!! They are Asian lady beetles. They have more than 5 polka dots and the white "M" mark on their head is always a give away that it's not a "true" ladybug.
Honestly it isn't a bad strategy. If she thought your finger wasn't a great place to lay an egg but she had to anyway, better to eat it and roll those resources back into a new egg in a better spot. Kind of like a period for a lady bug.

As I kid I once caught a lady bug and put it in a jar with some rose branches and a magnifying glass on top. She blessed me with her babies and I got to observe this. Most interesting experience you can have as a kid. I took care of her babies to make sure they had enough food and set them free after they had grown up.
Would definitely recommend this to parents.
I had a similar experience. I caught one from my school, took it home, then put her in a container that had tubes and other things she could crawl around in. I named her Rocky and soon after she layed some eggs. After that, I watched everyday to see if they made it, and when they hatched, I let Rocky and her children free.
God I hope she didn't eat them as soon as they left the container.

@@luffybetterr Don't be too scared; unless you're an aphid. Ladybugs are beneficial to us since they eat said aphids. Aphids eat crops. Farmers love ladybugs for this reason.

Usually egg clusters have a few eggs without anything growing in them for the larvae to feed on so they can gain a bit of energy after the exhausting hatch

if one of these cute bugs decides to bite you for whatever reason they will draw blood :) nearly got killed one day when one was smooshed by the drivers left arm in a car I was riding in. bit him on the elbow and dug in.. driver was not focused on the road. guy actually pulled over to dislodge the thing. then he let it go.

I love ladybugs. I get them where I live anytime it's cold and then it gets really warm. We don't kill them. Someone told me they bite but I have never been bitten and it's really cool to watch them drink water! If it's cold outside and I find one, I let them hang out near my plants until the next day when it warms up. I actually saw babies for the first time this year!! The babies aren't actually babies they are more like immature ladybugs. They are adorable. 🐞

Thank you very much for the work of creating this video. I never knew that those leaf-catching insects were actually ladybug larvae. I knew ladybugs ate aphids. But I didn't know they were cannibals and that when they were larvae they looked like that. Now I realize that I saw ladybugs in the garden in all 3 stages of development and I always thought they were different insects, different species when in fact they were all ladybugs.

So cool, I actually happen to run into ladybug larvae all the time in my backyard. I always catch them crawling on me. I never kill them because I didn’t know what they’d become if left alone. Now I’m very glad I didn’t see them as pest. Turn out I had future ladybugs crawling on me the whole time! Which are very beneficial to my garden!
