Life..in the Fast Lane..with Big Ern..and Big Dave..AKA..the Big Lebowski...Priceless
😁. Glad you like it👍🏽
Always great to hear the wisdom and insights from Check Airman Dave. Set yourself up for success and be ready to audible. I was one of the VERY few NCOs in the Air Force with a Masters degree back in the 90s because I wanted to set myself up for more opportunities in the civilian world in case the aviation route didn't pan out.
Always great content!! Fly safe Big Ern and Check Airman Dave!!
You have helped me get over my fear of flying 🙏🏼
Great forum gentlemen and always appreciate you sharing the truth to help the next generation of aviators. We’ll keep the hangar open for you at MDW. Safe travels✈️
Great video! Keep up the good work, love seeing behind the scenes and the ups(mostly) and downs as well as the occasional golden nuggets of information.
Thanks to Dave for answering our questions
Cheers to you both - Stay awesome guys!
Love the new intro and the video of course. Love the laughter and jokes you do, keep it up!
I'm so excited to watch another video from you. Please stay safe, cool from the Arizona HEAT. Hope to be able to be on a flight with you.
Love the content. Completely unvarnished and always an adventure. Keep it coming!
Thanks Jim!👍🏽
Just flew SWA yesterday. Another great day on Southwest. Bumpy flight due to weather, but an amazing light as a feather landing in Tampa. Love the Q&A. Stay safe Ern!!
Thanks for your business William. We really appreciate that👍🏽
Hey Ern, sound and image quality are top notch, congrats!

Another good video Ern! Thanks..
Shout out to the new editor! They did a great job keeping improving the channel while also staying true to the roots of the channel! Keep it up!
I heard the Green Hornet over the comms a few days ago while practicing some approaches into dvt! I told my instructor, "Thats BigErn!"
😁👍🏽
Love the vids ern keep up the good work on our way to 20k subs!! Cant believe it already!! Ern keep up the good flying!!
14:54 admit it Ern that jet bridge moving scared you a little thinking the parking brake wasn't set! Lmao just kidding, it did scare me though!
😁
Just came across your channel and I'm hooked! Binge watching everything now! I have a channel with not quite as many subs as you and I know how hard it is to create good content! Fantastic work! Very enjoyable to watch.
Great video Ernie! I really enjoyed that you had a good time with my dad. 😁
He’s so fun to fly with. Great man👍🏽
108 degrees!!
Even the 737 would be huffing and puffing. 🥵
That's nothing, its been 113 here for the last few days AND forecast for the next few days. Here, being Las Vegas, Nevada
@@lvsluggo007 thats only 5 degrees warmer
i love this "behind the scene" vlog!
His Kitfox is absolutely BA!
Thanks! We will be Oshkosh bound later this month and I'll start posting up videos.
Great new format 👍1st class 👏
Awesome seeing a fellow Arizonian! I work the ramp at KIWA, so I totally get that heat! XD
That’s cool check airman
Ern, your videos get better & better! I LOVE the Q&A's, even though I will never be a pilot (too old). I love learning about what it takes to be one.
Happy to hear that Debbie! I really enjoy talking to our seasoned pilots. They have so much wisdom. Cheers!
@@FlyingwithBigErn Looking forward to the next video. Safe flying, Ern.
wow that first question about the Type 1 Diabetic was a GOLDEN Question. That must be a new thing that the FAA has allowed. How long ago was that.. I am type 1 and at the time it just shot my dream of being a pilot to hell. So I am glad someone you can still fly. It is all about the control. I got Pump and CGM all the bells and whistles. I am going to be 58 later this month so It is not possible for me to make it at the airline.. Glad it is allowed now. :)
I would say it was in the last year or so.
You could get 2 or 3 years at an airline before mandatory retirement!
@@roberthochwarth578 I am pushing the age now.. :D
Another great vid.
Yes for AUS!
If I'm not mistaken, I think American is one of the few majors that will hire you without a degree, but you have to flow from one of their wholly-owned subsidiary airlines.
I can understand the argument of requiring a degree to show that someone may be well rounded, but ultimately, I personally believe that experience and a good character assessment is all that is needed. A degree may not always tell you what you need to know about an individual.
It’s preferred at most major/legacy carriers but is not required. FedEx and UPS I believe still firmly require a 4 year degree.
For the person who asked about becoming a pilot with type 1 diabetes, Pilot to Pilot podcast host Justin Seams did an episode on the person who made it possible for the FAA to approve pilots with type 1 diabetes. I forget which episode it was, think it was one of his early episode, but in the podcast they talked about the process. If that person wants to know a little more they can check out the episode.
Thanks for sharing. Happy to hear it is possible👍🏽
For a QNA question, what lights do you turn on at each moment? Example: When you depart or start to move, you turn on beacon. What are all those lights you do everytime?
Good question. Before engine start is the Beacon. Before takeoff is are the strobes. Cheers!
Great interaction with the captain. Regards from Brazil, South America.
Thank you Alberto!👍🏽
Doing a COS turn from DFW with my American Airlines 737 Captain friend tomorrow. Just need to go fly a little bit.... non-rev there and back🛫🛬
Spoiling us with this early video!
Hello Ern! This was another great vid to watch! Cool to see you (always optimistic) and Dave in the cockpit! question....is your Airline already thinking about cleaner flying? Thanks Ern for your energy...have a lovely weekend;)) warm greetings....Betsy....
Hi Betsy! Thank you as always. And yes! They are looking at that for the future. Cheers!
@@FlyingwithBigErn Thank you for your comment....and the answer to my question! Much apreciated.....safe flights Ern;)) Betsy.....
Hi flying with big ern that was a awesome video u are the best ever
Workin at a place that does atp ctp course and type ratings and there’s more people than ever before being sent by the airlines. They’re definitely trying to get back to full force asap
Heading to Vegas for my birthday at the end of the month, maybe we’ll see you on the flight, lol
I hope so! Always take a look!👍🏽
Yes, I see it is hot there in your home town but it is still a nice city. But fly safe always...
dave = nice guy!
p.s big ern for prez lol
What type of camera do you use big E?
Love the channel and awesome seeing it grow
Using a GoPro 8. Loving it👍🏽
Awesome! I appreciate you taking the time for the reply sir. Flying Southwest tomorrow morning to San Diego. Hoping someday I can catch you and say going up going up going up!
Sometimes you eat the bear, and sometimes the bear eats you! Sage wisdom.
Ern, how long till you pick up the left seat?
Can you react/review to a VATSIM (USA) ATC controlling session? If you need sources I can link some. Would like to know your take on it. Or maybe reacting to the zibo 737? Thanks!
I fly often on PilotEdge & highly recommend it over VATSIM.
I have a question for you about your SR22 its about the light configuration? I wanted to know if it has a location beacon or just the location Strobes? I was watching planes take off and land at OUN airport and noticed that all the SR22 used location Strobes on ground and in flight and it looked like they were the only position lightning there were no beacon lights. Hope you can answer this for me I know it's a strange question but would like to know.
With the phx heat, at what temperature does it get too hot for the planes to take off?
Yea
Hello ern, loving the content. Quick question you said you went to ASU. Did you get your pilot license at their aviation program? I want to transfer to the polytechnic campus at ASU and get my flight school training there so I can get my flight training and degree at the same time.
I actually didn’t do the program there at ASU. I’ve heard good things though👍🏽
@@FlyingwithBigErn oh lord. Still looking to be a sun devil though 😂
Hey Big Ern....do check airmen have to have CFI/CFII or is that not a requirement?
Not a requirement. I have a CFI/CFII/MEI but I would guess most don't.
I’m a checkairman for one of the other majors and I do not have a CFI/CFII.
Have you flown to every destination of your airline?
Not everyone yet unfortunately. Crazy because I’ve been here almost 10 years😁
I did my flight training in Phoenix at KFFZ and I'm now an A320 FO in Europe and would love to fly for a US carrier one day, do you think that would be possible with a green card and by converting my EASA licence into an FAA one ?
It is absolutely possible. I flew with an F/O a few months back that was flying for German carrier and won the green card lottery a few years back. Great guy, great pilot and he loves flying for us.
@@TheYellowBelle Can a U.S citizen start their flight training and fly in another country and also can we come back to the states to apply for a major airlines at some point?
@@bravocharlie24 Once you convert your foreign licenses to FAA licenses you would be able to apply to a US carrier.
Omaha, Omaha!
So if company cancels on you, do you still get paid for those hours?
At most if not all airlines yes we get cancellation pay and are protected by contract from cancellations.
Guy could do a great Obama impersonation 👍
S U B S C R I B E D ! ! ! !
Don’t forget to be a check airman you must also have a lot of sick time available………..unwritten rule.
Haven’t called out sick in years. And yes, I am a checkairman.

Everybody is always asking if the college degree is required. While technically it's not, you'd be tying a huge weight to yourself by not having one. I completely understand being frustrated by the "scam" aspect of higher education, on one hand it's extortion and often not necessary. It's kind of a slap in the face to a hard corps right wing person like myself, having to fund an army of blue haired liberal wombats and pseudo intellectuals like that, but it also shows you can commit to something for 4 years and finish it. Plus, it's kind of hard to justify it being a $200k-$400k/year job without it basically requiring a degree.
Having a couple of legs canceled... I can't go home for 5 hrs, I'm 2 hrs away from the airport. It would be so great to be that close to your base. Well, unless you're based at MDW like me.
