    I like how you got the kids perspective on these. I have this set and I use it mainly for cardmaking, they are really nice and I have used several real brush tipped marker brands and these are really good and way cheaper than ZIGs for example. I think the reason you don't find pigment info on these or any other markers for that matter (with the exception of Some Winsor & Newton ones) is because most markers use dies and not pigments. Copics are $7 a pop and they will fade too. Nature of the beast and since marker art is meant to be reproduced who cares what you use if you get the effect you want. I am familiar with Arteza and have many of their products and the colored pencils and paints d have lightfast info and the paints have pigment info too. I have been really pleased with the quality except for the watercolor which I found to be chalky. The gouache is amazing tho and super cheap! Great video!

      Thank you, Lindsay! I'm really glad you enjoyed this. Prior to releasing this video, Arteza reached out to me and asked if I'd be willing to check out their products. You were the one who mentioned they were "good people" which got me to consider a cooperative effort. So, thank you for that! I'm looking forward to working with them and learning more about their products, which I'll likely hand-off to my students to enjoy, too! :)

      I think that is great because anytime we can get decent materials in kids hands the investment is ten fold!

      Lindsay, I have a question about the Areza lightfast ratings on the colored pencils and maybe you can help. Do you know, does 3 crosses mean highly lightfast or does is mean fugitive? I only ask because I bought the set and the colors that are normally fugitive in other brands (such as pinks, and florescent type colors) seem to have the 3 crosses on them and other colors that are normally highly lightfast in other companies seem to have one cross on them. I am doing my own test in the window but was wondering if you knew how they conduct their ratings?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter 6 лет назад +3

      When I asked them this is what they said: + stand for lightfastness :
      +++ = at least 100 years;
      ++= at least 25-100 years;
      += at least 10-25 years
      But I think that it might be reversed on the pencils as I too noticed the pinks were a higher lightfast than other typically stable colors. I reckon they get they products done in different factories and some may use the ASTM ratings and some muse use the Blue wool scale. It will be intersting what you find out:)

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay 6 лет назад +1

      Thank you Lindsay, glad to know that I am not the only one who noticed. I have a couple more weeks before I am going to check my little test lol. I chose three colors from each rating to test. I will let you know what I find out!

    Thank you , we really appreciate your feedback. From our and other artists experience , real brush pens work best on the watercolor paper. Also we already added the color pigment names on our 12 and 96 sets, 24 and 48 are next to go.
    We would love to send you more stuff to test, your perspective is very unique and interesting. Thanks)

    I feel like these pens would be really good for calligraphy and lettering. Also the really faded and transparent effects that your one student got with them (The window with curtains in particular) was very impressive. They're going places!

    I really enjoy arteza as a company. I love their watercolors. And those do have all the information regarding pigments, lightfastness, and transparency. They're very nice and vibrant. But definitely student grade. But I'm not complaining because I got a nice pallette for around 25$. My only real complaint is that you can purchase colors individually. When I first received them, the post office didn't treat my package so well. I had burnt Sienna everywhere. So I emailed them about buying a replacement tube, and before I could say no, they'd already sent me emails saying they were just going to send me a whole new set, an order confirmation (with no charge obviously) and shipping notifications. They are efficient and wonderful to work with. I hope they continue as they grow as a company.

    I have some good and expensive watercolor Brushpens from Faber Castell and they behave the Same - you need a paper that doesn’t soak in the color in order to be able to solve the pigment with water. As soon as you fount the right paper you can have a lot of fun with them :)

      Being a child of the 1970s, we simply did not have access to all the incredible art supplies or video reviews that young people have now. Yet, handing off a box of untested markers to students was like going back in time and that feeling I used to have when I got a new art toy to play with. These students are really amazing young artists. Thank you so much for checking this out! I hope you're well on your end! :)

    What an awesome way to get these supplies reviewed! Also, what a great art-making environment these students have with colors everywhere, even on the ceiling! Thank you for using them on different papers. I have similar markers (different brand) coming to me and I will now try to use them across a variety of paper.

      Thank you so much, Jennifer! I'm happy you liked this one! Yes, the art room my friend Doug has created is staggeringly wild with color and creativity. I know this gig will end and I'll be back at my corporate cubicle soon, so I'm just trying to soak it all in while I'm there. As for the papers, I cut some of the other papers I tried, like newsprint and vellum, because they just didn't work. I was going to try them on printer paper, too, but forgot. lol! I look forward to seeing what you get for markers and how you enjoy using them (to be honest, I don't use markers often, so these were kind of nice to try!) Hope all is well on your end! :)

    I just got a set of these in the mail today and only ordered yesterday! I did just a quick color chart with them. None of my set of 96 were dry or had damaged tips which I had seen in a couple of reviews. Markers are not my favorite art supply, so did NOT want to spend gobs of money. I ordered from Arteza's website and only paid $66 for the set of 96. I also bought sets of 72 colored pencils and watercolor pencils. I really like the quality of the pencils... and yes I do have Prismacolors and Polychromos. I think these products are fabulous for the price and they have a fun color range as well.

    I really enjoyed your review. Having recently bought the 24 set I had a similar learning curve regarding the paper. I had seen a few people doing colouring with these pens and the colour moved so well on their pages. I eventually found that using a nice smooth hot press water color paper worked so well. The paper is nice and thick but because it is hot press and smooth, the colours move beautifully when activated by water. I find them such a fun product to play with in the adult colouring world.

    Idk why but the video clip of the class room and those kids give me some serious 90s vibes. I even double checked the date to make sure I wasn’t watching a really old video. I was a kid in the 90s (my favorite time period) and use to hang out at my cousins high school so the look just reminded me of that period of time. I also wanted to add the kid in the grey shirt has some amazing skills! They all are very creative but the student in grey was truly impressive! He is certainly honing in on his “style”. Very grunge, a style I really admire.

Giving the pens over to your top students was a brilliant idea, because these young people are serious about art, and want the best products. I've found that even with Winsor & Newton watercolor markers (which are pigment based and professional), that color pulls out easiest on hot press paper (or vellum bristol), but that it's workable for longer (you can remove strokes) if you use a toothy cold press paper. This is mostly true with the brush pen side of the W&N pens, I wouldn't advise using the bullet side for more than immediate details. You do have to work FAST when using them! And I would recommend layering colors before trying to blend out. But the results are really beautiful if you get the hang of it. Gee Massam does a ton of cool demos here on RUclips that I found very helpful. Cheers!

    A fun and interesting review! As a side note, Franklin Mieuli, who was the principal owner of the Golden State Warriors from 1962 - 1986, used to have a hand chair just like that in his office at what was then called the Oakland Coliseum (now Oracle Arena). I’ve seen a couple of art classrooms, especially in high schools, that have been decorated and it’s SO COOL. Really makes me wish I’d gotten to do that when I was a student! Fun fact-I had almost NO art classes in my whole life and seeing actual art classrooms as an adult makes the younger version of myself so jealous of the people that get to play in those spaces!!
    I’m wondering-do your students know about your RUclips channel? Do they know they’re famous?!?! =>..

    • @MDCampbell
      @MDCampbell  6 лет назад +2

      Thank you so much for checking this out, Kat! I'm happy you liked it! I was fortunate in high school to have an art teacher that encouraged me to paint on the walls, try new things, and who introduced me to airbrushing (giving me my first Iwata airbrush for graduation). Being part of this classroom environment has its challenges, I won't lie. Some students are really into art while others, well, aren't. These three students are _all_ about art, so I was thrilled to have their input. And yes, they're aware of my channel, but I don't know if they actually watch! lol! Both they and I tried several different methods of testing these brush pens. I was actually painting right off the tip of one pen at one point, but it didn't work so well. Wetting the paper first and putting them pen into it also didn't yield very good results. There's a comment here from an Arteza rep, who mentioned that watercolor paper works best with these, and I have to say how fabulously the ink soaked into the paper. However, I really liked the effect using the Stillman & Birn paper, too. Anyhow, I'm rambling. Thank you again and I was at a loss for what to draw for this one, so in the end, I was "beary" happy with the results. hehe!! :)

I bought the gouache simply to have fun with it and see if I liked using gouache! It is pretty fun because I never had to really worry about spending too much money on something I may not like.

    This is such a wonderful video, really love that classroom environment. Definitely good pens for fun doodles and inspiration, Maybe even if you are working on a thumbnail for color schemes will work too. I"m still so bias towards watercolors though they hold a special place on my heart lol

      Thank you, Angel Drawing Studio! It's so fun to try new products, especially being a corporate designer where I don't usually get to try out things like this. I will say, the classroom environment has made me both older in some ways, but younger as an artist because of the constant inspiration from the amazing creative spirits around me. Cheers! :)

    Why didn't you wet the paper first and then apply the colour. I think that would lead to a different result.

      Unfortunately, wetting the paper first and using the markers didn't have favorable results. Different, yes, but not what I would recommend. :)

    Great review and well thought out format for it. 👌 The pigment and how light fast they are might be issues if one's selling original art. If the art's going in a sketchbook and won't be seeing much exposure or is going to be scanned, photographed for books, prints etc I wouldn't worry about it. Whether or not a professional artist would use a low cost alternative depends on their own needs and preferences.
    I do hope you'll review some of their other products as well. There are a lot of Arteza products, but not a lot artist reviews from what I've seen.

      Hi James and thank you! I'm happy you enjoyed this one. A spokesperson from Arteza mentioned in the comments below that with their newer sets they have begun printing the color names on the pens. They're a fairly new brand to the market so they're willing to listen to customer feedback, which is insanely great to see a company do. As another viewer mentioned, I could see myself using these pens for thumbnails, swatch layouts, and rough sketches. Even a student-mid grade product will have a solid use if the product is made well. I enjoyed these! Cheers! :)

      I had an idea come to mind for a video. I don't think too many people if any have done it. 💁 A video specifically on how light, bright, and other yellows barely show up on bright, natural, or off white substrates and if there's any fix for it. It happens with markers, colored pencils, pens, crayons etc. It might make for an interesting video. Thanks for the reply. 🙋

    My husband got me one of their sets of paints for Christmas. I'm super picky about what I paint with. I mean a single sheet of my paper costs more than about 3 sets of their paints! But I was willing to try it and I did have a whole lot of fun with them. I'll keep using them...just on different paper! And I'm now impressed that my husband, who knows absolutely nothing about art, was able to buy me an art supply I'd use again! I think their lack of info could be about copywrite/trademark safety. But I could be way, way off on that cause I know nothing about business! 😊

      I am right now trying out their 48 colored premium pencils that come in a tube and they are very pigmented I like them a lot. The product I am curious about is their water color paper I think you get 2 to a pack of 32 sheets 140# very good price but is it quality paper or will it just shred when moisture gets on it lol. If it is good then is definitely worth it I believe. Normally I use Canson 140#

    I got a 48 set off Amazon for like 18 bucks and they are really nice for adult coloring books but really that is about it not good for a quality art piece. Edit: Arteza is a Chinese company that is trying to produce slightly above student grade supplies. I like their drawing paper and gouache a lot and their colored pencils do layer pretty good. My advise watch Amazon for a sale they have them all the time.

    • @MDCampbell
      @MDCampbell  6 лет назад

      Yes, up in the video description, I listed it. You're looking at a Pentel Waterbrush. Arteza actually makes their own waterbrushes, as do Sakura. I prefer the Pentel over all of them, though. While they are fantastic for travel and quick paintings, there are drawbacks to having a constant stream of water instead of like a regular paintbrush where you have to pick up the water. I admit, that when I'm just out and about, I use my waterbrushes ALL the time, just for fun but not really for any serious work. I hope that helps! Cheers! :)

    No, they’re a artist grade pen. He is just applying too much pigment (you need to know how to use them).

    • @MDCampbell
      @MDCampbell  6 лет назад

      First, just because a company calls their products "premium" or "professional" doesn't make them premium or professional. With 30 years of experience using dozens of marker products, I'm confident in my assessment that these are as close to "student" grade as you can get. I say this because of the design of the product, the way the tips split and fray after just a few uses, and that the ink runs out more quickly than other pens. There's no refill option and no way to repurchase individual pens to replace. But, what is your experience with these products, James Costulis? You say I'm applying too much pigment. Really? To me, I'm using the product as it's designed and to the style with which I've been creating my work for three decades. I think it's safe to say, yes - I know how to use them, just fine. But, if you've got some insight about how to use markers or these products, specifically, please consider sharing it with me so I can better understand the _right_ way to use them, since by your opinion, I don't. Looking forward to your thoughts. Cheers! :)

    • @MDCampbell

      @@Crucibelle, thank you for your feedback on this. It's good to hear from someone who's actually using these pens. I thought they were fine, too, but it would've been nice if James had shared his insight. I would enjoy learning new ways of using products. Cheers to you! ;)

    Is there such a thing as "artist grade brush pens"? I thought they were all student/craft grade.

    • @MDCampbell
      @MDCampbell  6 лет назад +1

      From my perspective, bastet469, a LOT of the naming has to do with marketing. Companies label products "professional," "expert," "pro," and "artist grade," simply to target specific users and attach a higher price point. That's what prompted my video "Are Prismacolors a Scam?" because in the classroom we use student grade Scholars, as opposed to the more expensive Premiers. I would suggest before making any purchase, always check out reviews and ask questions when shopping retail. Some brands are simply made with higher quality materials that justify the higher price and label, like Copic and Faber Castell. Others, we'd have to explore to really understand. :)
