"Cocoon" This cocoon, caught in Vesuvius' shadow Only the ashes remain And I waited there for you Why couldn't you? Here we lie waiting for something to startle To shake us from gravity's pull And so the sleeping hours are through What can we do? The sorry conclusion, the low dirty war, it happened before you came to But this is solution, and this is amends The joke always tends to come true But there on your windowsill over the unmoving platoon Written in paperback, the view to the quarterback's room Under waning moon This quiet serves only to hide you Provide you What I knew: it'd come back to you Take this palm, follow the lines here are written And script out the rest of your life And feel your fingers falling slack and all folding back The tainted election, the hole in the sky Command what is tried, what is true But without solution, with feet on the ground It won't make a sound 'til you're through So loosen your shoulderblades This is your hour to make due Because there on the timberline Deep cold November shines through Soft and absolute
took me a really long time to realize this song is clearly about the Bush-Gore election, and I've been thinking about that a lot as November '20 approaches...
@@jackstraw262 "the tainted election"; the 2000 election would've been while they wrote this. *_Every single election_* for the past 70 years has *either* been won by a Democrat or by a Republican with *direct intelligence agency ties,* excepting Reagan and Trump, the random Hollywood/public support guys (of whom Reagan swept, and Trump seems about to sweep the whole country!) (Most standards dispute that, but I don't doubt Bush would've cheated it if he had to. While Bush Jr got painted as a dolt, this is a CIA family; these are professional US intel agents VERY familiar with rigging elections, at least foreign ones.) The mix of piano and the acoustic guitar is so simple. Enchanting and heart-tugging.
one of my favorites right now
oh my god, this sounds so beautiful
my current favourite song!
"Cocoon"
This cocoon, caught in Vesuvius' shadow
Only the ashes remain
And I waited there for you
Why couldn't you?
Here we lie waiting for something to startle
To shake us from gravity's pull
And so the sleeping hours are through
What can we do?
The sorry conclusion, the low dirty war, it happened before you came to
But this is solution, and this is amends
The joke always tends to come true
But there on your windowsill over the unmoving platoon
Written in paperback, the view to the quarterback's room
Under waning moon
This quiet serves only to hide you
Provide you
What I knew: it'd come back to you
Take this palm, follow the lines here are written
And script out the rest of your life
And feel your fingers falling slack and all folding back
The tainted election, the hole in the sky
Command what is tried, what is true
But without solution, with feet on the ground
It won't make a sound 'til you're through
So loosen your shoulderblades
This is your hour to make due
Because there on the timberline
Deep cold November shines through
Soft and absolute
This is why I love the Decemberists, and I'd love them just as much to be at war with them.
Loving this song! So many interpretations.
I'm listening to this from my Neapolitan hotel with a view of Vesuvius in the distance.
This album, Her Majesty and Picaresque have a very nostalgic sound that makes me feel a bit down thinking about the past.
Though they’re entire discography excerpt maybe the most recent album is borderline perfect.
Beautiful ❤🌻❤
my favorite song 💜💜
Alright now that I'm crying in quarantine
The 3 people who disliked this song will die as stubby, stubbly caterpillars.
They would desperately desire to scream, but they would have no mouth.
the stubbly caterpillars are the best caterpillars tho.
@@josiahfresnel the author wonderfully narrated a recording himself, of course

This song has been stuck in my head many a morning. My apologies to the Pompeiian ghosts who made it so poignant.
For sure, but know this is more about the WW2 ghosts of Italy than it is about anything ancient.

What? [insert wat lady meme]
No shit. It definitely has some elements of the Bush-Gore election. Obvious to anyone over 30. How old are you? Brand-new fan ass. 🤦♀️
