    Thanks for all the comments everyone! I am working through them and trying to respond to everyone. I knew this would be divisive but that tends to lead to good discussion. I am already thinking I may need to do a second video sometime as there are a lot of interesting topics to discuss. I need to stress I am not trying to sell the game to anyone, I am simply explaining why I play it and that in my opinion its not a bad game. Not a bad game does not mean its a great game either.

      The internet has an obsession with wanting to see big studios fail and they will absolutely project that obsession onto any situation until they can build a narrative, and the toxicity is contagious. It's sad.

    Sounds like you have similar feelings towards the game as I do. In so many words it sounds like you’re saying it’s a relaxing game. Which it is… too relaxing. I finally realized it’s too relaxing which kinda means boring. Granted, as Mattyplays points out, this game is not meant to be played like a normal Bethesda game (whether that was intentional or not, not sure anyone knows), and I try to play it like a Bethesda game because I can’t help myself.
    I don’t dislike the game, I just expected a lot more from it. I bought jedi survivor for 50% off recently and I jumped ship really quick because that game is tons of fun! Hopefully I get the itch to play starfield again but right now, I don’t see that happening. It just doesn’t have the “it” factor for me that drives me nuts to finally get some free time to play games. And I think that has to do with the fact that the game has really bad downtime. When you’re doing a quest, it’s fun and exciting, but everything in between is really boring, bland, repetitive etc. I mean, to survey a planet to 100% can take an hour sometimes and that is not fun. In Skyrim, in between every quest was multiple handcrafted locations, npc’s and more quests. In starfield, it’s the same raiders outpost on every planet… I’m sick of clearing the same outpost every time!
    Again, I don’t hate the game, it’s just not what I was expecting from what was being described to me and it spectacularly underdelivered. They did use the description “Skyrim in space” and that’s not at all what we got.

    I totally agree. Bethesda games all have this quality of being like comfort food. Once you get over the hump of learning the controls and navigating their invariably wonky UIs, all Bethesda games just become incredibly easy to engage with. I can always find some new activity to ping-pong around to when I get tired of doing something. I don't think it's a coincidence that I want to play Baldur's Gate 3 during the day and Bethesda games at night, simply because Bethesda games are this very chilled-out, not-at-all-cerebral experience. Playing on PC and having access to the console commands gives me almost complete control over this gigantic sandbox, and mods let me tinker and perfect my game world to my exact specifications. Starfield has this same quality, but I can't shake the feeling that it may not have the same "legs" as Skyrim, Oblivion, or Morrowind. I think for me that mostly comes down to the leveling system that doesn't encourage restarting to try new character builds.
    Starfield is far from perfect, but it's also far from the terrible game the internet is making it out to be. It advanced the Bethesda formula in some ways and failed to advance it (or took steps backward) in others. Mods and DLC will improve the game, but it'll never be everything to everyone (which I think is the expectation of some players). I do think that in time and with mods and DLC and patches, Starfield will be redeemed in the eyes of the player base (like Cyberpunk 2077 or No Man's Sky, both of which got the "trash game, 0/10, do not buy" treatment upon launch, and are now widely praised).

    I really think, that you can appreciate the game for what it is.
    There are two things, I want to criticize about the game:
    - When companies like Bethesda get lazy and deliver a game that is poorly developed and is sold for a premium price and should be conceived as one of the best games of all time.
    - When some people think, it must be the game of the year or even more, because it comes from their beloved gaming company and they don't understand that there are also different tastes and concepts in the world.
    Both notions are in effect destructive to the whole gaming community (if there is one) -- because it degrades gamers as cash-cows which have to pay for whatever the big corporations are serving them. It takes away creativity and makes the gaming industry a purely mechanical process to get more cash from the stupid consumers.

    I am not at all into looter shooters but I play Space Engineers. They figured out the solution to Starfields problem of all empty space. There is a mod (Modular Encounter Spawner) that spawns player created content (from the Steam workshop) according to rules set in a player created scenario (also from the Steam workshop). If you want to fight space battles all the time, or raid cargo ships, or scavenge for materials on a dystopian planet you only need to go find a scenario that does so on the Steam workshop. And if you can't find what you need but have a basic knowledge of general modding you can build your own scenarios and upload them to the workshop.
    It's never ending content variation that follows you around wherever you are.

    I dont have a machine that could even run it. I have been following a bunch of reviews because Im fascinated by the (possibly cursed) problem of combining unlimited procedural worlds with an RPG.
    I think what you are saying coincides with what certain other people that enjoy the game have been saying. They don't mind the lack of a complicated epic space opera with tightly interwoven stories because if you are only playing when you get a chance you want something more casual, eg a looter shooter type where you can complete a decent half-hour gameloop and not be lost the next time you step into it.
    That is good news in the sense that I think the looter shooter gameloop is one part of the game that we know how to make dramatically better, even on purely procedural maps. At the moment it has the puzzling flaw that the game spawns an allegedly small number of bases with the exact same clutter and everything. Not even basic procedural generation.
    THAT, at least, can be dramatically improved. If not by DLC, I expect even modders could trivially add to the database of special locations, and add procedural variation to those locations as well. I expect someone could even write a full on procedural dungeon crawler using the modular base building mechanic.
    it is really puzzling why Bethesda had not already addressed this. In fact I would say it is _impossible_ that they were not painfully aware of such a basic missing feature.
    *My theory is this:* I think microsoft in some way stepped in and set a date after which Bethesda was not allowed to add more features and could only do bugfixes. This is considered basic good software development practice, but I think it destroyed Bethesda's janky magic.
    Here are the points I think it connects:
    * Bethesda was recently bought by M$ which wanted a flagship game for XBox. M$ knew Bethesda was infamous for games that were vastly buggy on release so it is likely they made such a demand.
    * One reviewer did in fact claim that Microsoft had delayed release for more bugfixing.
    * This game did reportedly release in an unusually unbuggy state for Bethesda.
    * but instead it lacked some core game features: eg sufficient variation of special locations, and a good purpose for bases.
    * There was in fact mention that a fuel feature was removed because it was killing fun.. but thus the bases were pointless. It seems clear the real fix they needed was to find/finish the feature that integrated bases.
    * In this context, I suspect Emilio's comment about reviewers no understanding the realities of game development makes so much more sense. He was really frustrated that he was gagged from saying why he had to release a game with these humiliatingly obvious omissions, and listen to reviewers implying he was so incompetent he was unaware of these omissions.

    • @BethesdaQuester
      @BethesdaQuester  11 месяцев назад

      That makes a lot of sense. I was wondering myself if MS getting involved had an impact. I agree a lot of things can be fixed with updates and it does sound like a considerable team is staying on the project. I did hear about a more survival focused mod which I assume will include the features that were considered to be "killing the fun". For me I almost always play games on their hardest difficulty and survival modes. I get why the masses do not like these modes but for me it forces a slower more thought out play style.

  • @foshee1123
    @foshee1123 Год назад +2

    Completely agree with this take. I dont think anyone would disagree that the game is disappointing, but its honestly suprising to see how many consider it bad. Its been fascinating for me to watch as the game has basically had the opposite trajectory of all other modern AAA games. I think the relative praise the game received at launch is the best indicator of it being squarely in the dissapponting category rather than the "bad" category. Did I want something like Skyrim in space? Yes. An I disappointed in getting something much closer to a fallout 4 in space? A bit. But if you constantly trash evey 7/10 as a 2/10 then you're very rarely going to get a masterpiece. Most of the greatest games of all time or built on the shoulders of their more underwhelming predecessors (even if they arent direct sequels). But, that isnt an excuse for the lack of innovation, its just a defense of the work that is put in, its not a GOTY but its not worthy of the "overwhelmingly negative" tag either, objectively the game has a bunch of issues and is plenty enjoyable if you play it the way it wants you to, but if you dont want to play a linear, pretty surface level Philosophy spaceman game with some impressive ship building and rock solid customization and gunplay with some interesting perks then you arent going to enjoy it and that's fine, just as some won't enjoy BRs, MOBAs, Rogue-likes, etc.

    Hell, people seem to forget Skyrim and Fallout 4 are also rather average games. In their vanilla form. Without mods.
    Although I must admit it seems Bethesda is making it harder to mod their games. I didn't enjoy modding Fallout 4, it was a nuisance trying to go back and forth patching every broken mechanic, then the constant game updates continuously broke the mods. Same with Skyrim SE/AE. I'm not looking forward to experiencing all of these same headaches with Starfield. (Yes, if you're wondering, the ideal Bethesda game to mod is Skyrim LE).

Beside the loading screen and the transports issues , the worse thing is after 160 hours in after the main quest and factions quest are done, there is noting interesting left to do beside building ship and outpost , this is the biggest flaw of this game. I played Skyrim for a decade and always find something to go back to it , not seeing that with that game.

    Edit* just wanted to add I’ve got 1 day 8 hours game times so I’ve gave it time but all that time was spent waiting on enjoyment that was never brought, feels more like a task fast travelling to each wee quest then fast travelling back, whilst experiencing 4 loading screens in the process

    So, I respect your opinion, but a few things to keep in mind are that the technology isn't there yet is a red herring. No man's sky in 2016 had better spaceflight, and better procgen. Sure, the game still sucked, but it sucked because it lacked stuff to do outside of run around and build stuff.
    You are correct that Skyrim density is basically impossible on the scale of Starfield, but you don't really bring up that Skyrim had mostly hand-crafted experiences and a world that made sense internally.

    My main gripe is how lifeless but overpopulated the planets are at the same time.
    Procgen is really poorly made, you land on an "unexplored" planet and it is spammed full of abandoned bases, while the forests have zero floor texture variation and bushes are in the weirdest places.

    • @BethesdaQuester
      @BethesdaQuester  Год назад

      Yes I felt that for the lore to be believable you would actually need a lot less development on the planets. In only a few hundred years you would not have several human built structures per each tile of each planet. The procedural generation of the terrain I find pretty convincing as the planets geography looks pretty natural. The seeding of each tile of terrain with "random" hand built structures is a poor choice. On the flip side people would have probably complained if there was nothing but wilderness even if it was more realistic in terms of forest density etc. NMS did the same thing and it was boring to me pretty quickly. Ill admit I have not gone back to NMS and I know they have greatly improved it. When I was playing it exploration was the point of the game and seeing the same stuff in a different color was not interesting to me. In Starfield exploration is optional so I just do less of it and don't burn out.

    I don't think it's a bad game, just a game held back by poor design & management choices. There's a dearth of Bethesda content in the game which the RUclips channel Camelworks exposed in their "how to make Starfield better" video. 53 people made Morrowind with nearly 400 Faction quests in the base game, there were 1,101 people credited as developers on Starfield, they made just 39 faction quests... that is just a stunningly low amount for the size, scope & scale of Starfield. I can see past the engine limits if the game has enough story to make up for it, Starfield just doesn't have that.
    It works fine for some, great and being able to recognise the issues while still enjoying it even more so. I have nearly 400 hours into it (mostly doing challenges/mod testing but the first 40-50 hours was fun, if a little quirky. In starfield you explore procedural generated worlds, you mine, you fight hostiles, you build, devs will start adding stuff, game sorta starting bland
    There's one thing from Minecraft that starfield doesn't have that could save starfield... Everyone knows how in Minecraft where you can have a multiplayer lobby and if you have mods that those mods are only applied to the hosts save file but when everyone else joins it is a temporary download if starfield could do this for their game I think it would do a lot more with what they already have just by adding this scenario

I think the only reason Starfield has been less boring to me is because there are questlines (despite them not all being great). NMS at least in the first year or two had only the one "questline" and it was not catching on for me. Don't get me wrong though, I think NMS had a lot of things that Starfield is missing but they were not things I cared for I guess.

I got starfield for free because it's on game pass and I put maybe two hours in and I was so bored out of my mind that I had to put it down. Granted some of it is 100% my personal opinion, but it's not that starfield does a lot of thing well but nothing great, it stretches itself so thin that it's barely playable.
    The first thing I noticed was the horrendous ui. It was like they were going for an 80's space theme and then took away a lot of the charm and added discomfort navigating it. But maybe it's not so bad outside of that. I do have a mission to explore a lab and take out pirates that threaten my quest.
    Oh, I'm carrying too much and they have a new stamina system. Maybe it won't be so bad. Oh I can't even crouch walk without losing all my oxygen and filling up my co2 bar within seconds because I picked up everything that looks expensive because they didn't give me much indication that credits were worth not that much individually? Oh well, that could just be on me though because there was a vending machine with a drink for 75 credits so I could have been the only person to miss that. Now that I'm done I've got a lot of good loot worth slowly getting to my ship for, I'm sure I'll be able to find a merchant to sell right after I quickly land on alpha centari...
    Oh, it put me in orbit after a loading screen? Is there anything for me to do here? No? Just get back in the system map and select the city instead of doing that from the jump so i don't have to go through two separate long loading screens?
    Oh, I don't know where a merchant would be and the buildings are all super spaced apart meaning I'll have to spend 10 minutes inching to where I suspect a merchant might be. Oh well, maybe somebody else could see the buildings and understand which is what. For now I guess I'll just use the map and figure out where to... Oh. Oh no.
    Just in case it comes off in a rude way. I just wanna leave an edit to say I was just disappointed in the game and really wished there was more in terms of really anything enjoyable. The story didn't grip me, the gameplay was just boring enough for me to not be able to turn my brain off for, and a lot of the systems I have read about or experienced in my very brief dive into the game just turned me off a lot. The annoyance I convey in the comment is in no way supposed to be an attack on you and I just wanted to make sure it didn't seem like it was.

    But I just love how this game makes me want to be an astronaut. It's a very mature game, not in the sense of violence and such but it feels way more realistic and based in science than other sci-fi games. For example, I understand how it would be fun to land your own ship, but to me they make the size of a planet so big in scale, that if you were to actually land that ship it would take an hour to land, like it would in real life. So I don't mind a cut scene.

    Bethesda had eight years, unlimited budget, a proverbial army of developers and most of their R&D provided by the modding community and what we got was a step backward in both story and engine design. I am sorry but there should be someone in Microsoft right now wondering where their money went.

      I guess there are diminishing returns as you add more resources to videogame development. I would say its more of an art. I do wonder what it would have taken to be better received. I think the writing and other quirks in Starfield are shared with the other Bethesda RPGs so If it had less loading screens and you could fly your ship more seamlessly would it have been a win in your mind?

    I'm glad this game worked for you! I know it really was a let down for a good chunk of the community, and I'm not an exception. But I feel like we've lost touch with the reality that what works for some may not work for others, and that 'one man's trash is another man's treasure' is an idiom meant to showcase that something's value is subjective. Too many people are declaring that Starfield is OBJECTIVELY a bad game. But it's not. I didn't like it. I don't feel like it has the value that previous Bethesda games have had, and it feels like a giant step back from Skyrim and even Fallout 4. But, it seems like the average hater is convinced that anyone who enjoys it is objectively just wrong or is being intentionally contrarian to get attention. Enjoy your treasure, my guy!

    I really respect your take on this. As someone with a condition and situation that allows me practically limitless time to game, I put 18 days (real world) into Starfield. I was apathetic most of the time and hated many parts of it at the worst, but was very impressed with a handful of moments. The three aspects that kept me going for over 400 hours were the planetary surveying, the leveling grind and the combat.
    I finally 100%'ed (or as much one can, I suppose) Starfield a few days ago and felt like I could put it down and move on to other things.
    But your video reminded that, while I don't leave disparaging comments online about games I dislike (considering I _chose_ to keep playing it), games mean different things to different people, and just because I wound up really disliking Starfield despite getting my money's worth out of it, it doesn't mean someone else can't find a really good time with it. I'm glad it satisfies that gaming itch for you in the limited hours you have per week.

    I played starfield and I liked it, but I didn't like it as much as I wanted to. The biggest reason was that it was more of a loadingfield than a starfield, and spaceflight wasn't really spaceflight!
    Also some quests were just a joke and not up to date! For example, there was one quest where you had to help the constellation on their outpost "the eye" or what it was called and help them to repair it. But when you did that, you always just got a popup that described what you did, like you were playing a text adventure and stuff like this happened all the time, so I wasn't amused about that, considering I had to pay 70 Euros for this.
    Nevertheless, Starfield is surely a very mixed and not very good game and it has a lot of flaws, but it's still not that bad, like the ratings on steam say, but I understand the disappointment and I partly feel the same! But there are also some really good moments, why I think that the overall rating eventually should end up in something like "mixed" and not "mostly bad", but that's surely my own opinion!
    I appreciate the video, since it's not the most popular, to do a positive review on Starfield these days, and I even think that there is a negative hype that lets it spiral down so much like it recently does!

    • @BethesdaQuester
      @BethesdaQuester  Год назад +1

      Yes that quest repairing the Eye is terrible and should never have made it into the game. Thanks for the comment and I sort of knew I would be getting some flack but again I am not trying to get anyone to play. I am just explaining why I am playing it. Making content has made it more fun for me but its far from my favorite game. Just an OK game I don't mind playing here and there.

Back in the day when I played Morrowind, it was an awesome experience, but it was all downhill from there. I like bethesda games but don´t love them. I think they are all poorly written and staged when it comes to quests, characters and dialogues, but they all have this feature to suck you in the world for a short amount of time.
    Starfield works for me because I have fun playing it. It´s that easy.
    Not every game has to be a masterpiece, most games aren´t but still can be fun.
    It´s not the only game I play. I love games from Rockstar, CDPR, I love Baldur´s Gate 3 and I have to say that I liked Diablo 4, too. So I don´t get the point of comparing every game while you can play what you want, even a title which costs nothing with gamepass.
