Testing Diffusers for Macro | Bounce adapter, Bounce Card, Lightsphere & Reflector/Diffuser Kit

- In this video I compare all my different diffusion accessories in order to find out whether any of these are viable options for macro photography besides a dedicated reflector/diffuser kit from Crafty Bells which I normally use when in the field.
I shoot multiple subjects without any diffusion and also with each accessory then look at the end results on my computer for a final decision.
The importance of light diffusion for macro photography can't be overstated and hopefully some of these test shots will demonstrate that fact.

Thanks for showing the technical differences of the available Diffusers. Great video Peter.
Thanks guys, appreciate it!🙌👍 Hope you are having a lovely week! Cheers
Very informative!!!!! Your set up is awesome. Your set up is awesome and I am glad you put it in the description!!! 🤗
Thanks John. It works great so quite happy with it for sure:) Have a good one mate!
@@peterviragphoto You do get some AMAZING shots with it.... and the 80D. I like the focus peaking on the mirrorless M50 and the Laowa!! 🤗
Thanks for your hard work and great advice. I’ll save this video for when I’m ready to splash out on some new equipment.
Thanks a lot for your kind feedback. Enjoy the rest of your week😊
I had a feeling I knew which would win. Quite an exact science it is!!
Haha yep. I was surprised by how well some of the other diffusers performed with a couple of subjects but overall the reflector/diffuser kit was the strongest for sure. Cheers
Great video mate. I'll be using this to refer to when I get my diffuser eventually. Beautiful images as always buddy. Thanks for sharing your findings 🙏
Thanks Adrian, appreciate it mate! Hope you’re having a nice week🤞👍👍
Another interesting and informative video Peter. Well done 👍🇦🇺👏
Thanks Alex, appreciate it!🐦🐦
This is such a great video bro. Of course the images were great and interesting results (didn’t know the amount of detail needed in checking for highlight spots for macro and insects 😁) but I also just noticed your video editing itself. 😂 great use of the jump cuts and transitions. Very informative and enjoyed this one man.
Thanks heaps mate, very kind of you. Glad you enjoyed:) Have an awesome day!
Great video Peter I definitely like the Crafty bells defuser for close up.😊😊😊
Thanks Andy, appreciate it. Me too:) Hope you’re having a nice week mate! That last shot you posted on IG is a banger!
Gorgeous images as always!
They were just test shots, but thanks!😀
Hi Peter this was so interesting and informative. Good to see and learn about things like this. It's good that you are recommending that diffuser. You are way too professional for me hehe, you're so good at all of this and it's great to hear your perspective. Your filming and footage is always so amazing. Thanks. Have a great day and upcoming weekend 🙂👍
Stop it Anna haha! Appreciate the support:) Glad you found it interesting. Have an amazing weekend too mate. Cheers😊
@@peterviragphoto Dave ???? 😃
LOL Anna🤣 sorry
@@peterviragphoto That's OK Amelia 😄🙌
🤣🤣
For me both quality and compactness are important. I have recently started using a cheap diffuser that slides into the lens and you hold it with one finger at 45 degrees. Super cheap very compact great images
Thanks Douglas! As long as you’re happy with the results, that’s all that matters. Have a good one!:)
Interesting video, thanks for sharing!
Thank you. Have a nice day!
Really interesting test. I've never used a speedlight in my landscape photography. That 4th diffuser kit is quite the setup! I'd say overall the Gary Fong deflector and your deflector kit really outperformed the others. Great stuff as always mate! Hope all is well, have a great weekend down there!
Thanks a lot Paul! I could only think of a few scenarios ( focus stacked )ultra wide- angle shots where a speedlite could be used to bring out details in the foreground in certain scenarios but overall not really useful😀. Hope you’ve had a great week buddy. Have an awesome weekend! Cheers😊
Thanks for the video. I agree with you on the Crafty Bells diffuser. I think it looks best I have one and have done similar tests and it always looks the best with a standard flash. I also bought a Flashpoint MF-12 and the crafty bells double flash diffuser. I have not tried the double diffuser yet but others online say it is the best combination. In your first test. I would have taken off the lens hood for a more even test.
Thanks for watching mate, appreciate it! Yes, you’re right re the lens hood but I actually took shots w/o it as well eventually haha. Shouldn’t even have had it on, mainly use it when I record videos.😜 The flashpoint MF-12 looks interesting but usually having the light source as far away from the subject as practically possible yields better results but that could be compensated for with using much less output as well. Again thanks for your comment & feedback, always appreciate it! Have an awesome weekend! Cheers
Wonderful and amazing👍👍
Thank you
Excelente! Obrigado pelo vídeo e saudações do Brasil !
Thx a lot!
Hello...thanks for showing!! Greetings Gijs
Thanks a lot Gijs
good gadget sir, thanks for sharing your macro photography secret
No worries, thx!
Great video, very informative Peter. Great to see all the options side by side. Interestingly I've been considering a sphere recently, but a different brand. I think my main concern with it is that it disperses light in all directions, not just towards the subject. So if I do get it, I was thinking of rigging up something reflective inside the sphere - do you have any thoughts on that? Great video though mate, I can see people finding this one really useful.
Thanks a lot Scott. Yes, you’re right, directing light can be an issue with a sphere but upgrading it with an internal reflector might compensate somewhat. I’ve never been a MacGyver, so if you end up building something, let me know how you go!😀 Cheers
Awesome video enjoyed watching always stay connected 🌷
Thank you very much
Very nice showing
Thanks!
What do you think about using the magmod's magbounce for on camera flash and magsphere for off camera flash?
Hey there. I have never used those but I had a quick look and they should definitely help soften the light. Cheers
The Crafty Bells link does not seems to be working. Enjoyed the comparison.
Thanks Steve. Unfortunately their business closed earlier this year:(
You really need some sort of diffuser for this photography I think. It really brings out the images. Great photos as always.
Thanks Paul, I agree. Some sort of diffuser or at least a reflector is preferred. Have a good one!Cheers👍
Nice test do you have a link to the diffuser kit you said you use ,? Thanks
Hey Mark, thank you, much appreciated. It’s in the description ( Crafty Bells ), but hopefully you can see it here too ( sometimes links are invisible due to some filters ): photographyaccessories.com.au/shop/ols/products/macro-reflector-slash-diffuser-system-kit-small
Have a great day!
good work keep going bro
Thanks a lot Oussama!
Really useful Peter - I actually started watching this about a week ago and got called away midway through, had it earmarked to get back to. I really like your set-up. Just been across to the Crafty Bells website actually, do you know which model it is that you've got - the website isn't really too descriptive - is yours the large with twin bonnet or the combination bonnet? It's something I definitely want to get my hands on. Cheers mate, great video
Thanks heaps mate, appreciate it. I actually have the small reflector/diffuser kit with a couple of bonnets ( one large which is for my Laowa 25 mm ultra macro and the small one for my EF 100mm ). If you have any questions or unsure about something then feel free to get in touch with them directly, they are very helpful. I think they have whatsapp too, just double checked. Let me know how you go:) Thx again and have an awesome wek buddy! Cheers.
Good to see that🤗34with best.. keep share happy conect works
Thanks!
@@peterviragphoto yes💐best way stay retun suport well
Really interesting to see these real world tests between different products . Were you using the ETTL or setting the flash duration yourself ?
Thanks a lotChris! Was using TTL metering for this. I mainly use manual but most of the time it’s at max output to keep the ISO low. Cheers
Hi Peter. I clicked on Crafty Bells, link it says 404 ERROR. Have they gone out if business ??? Enjoyed your video.
Hey Roger. Thanks for watching the video, much appreciated. Yes, unfortunately they closed down their business a few months ago. They tried to sell it and at one stage it looked like they had a buyer but the deal must have fallen through unfortunately. Sorry about that. I’ll potentiyll be reviewing different options down the track such as Cygnustech and the AK diffuser systems. Cheers
@@peterviragphoto Thanks for the very prompt reply. Wishing you well for the future. Roger
You too mate!
where can i purchase the Reflector/Diffuser Kit?? what is the name there are so many in amazone
Hi there. Thanks for watching. It’s in the description ( at the very bottom ) but hopefully you’ll be able to see it there too: photographyaccessories.com.au/shop/ols/products/macro-reflector-slash-diffuser-system-kit-small
You can pick the large one as well if you use a larger setup. This small business will be shutting down on the 20th of January. Cheers
Execelente camara
Thank you
Hello my dear friend!😊👍39
👍
Do you have any lens seggestion for jewellery photography?
Hi Taha. For jewellery a macro lens capable of 1:1 reproduction would be enough. I use the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS. Cheers
@@peterviragphoto thanks man
Very welcome. Have fun, I’m sure you’re gonna take some beautiful shots!👍🙌💎💍
Was looking at purchasing the Reflector/Diffuser Kit from Crafty Bells but when you go onto their site it says they are going out of business. Pity as it looked like one of the better options.
Yes, unfortunately but they can still process orders up to the 20th of January I believe. Cheers
@@peterviragphoto Yup, I took the leap of faith and just ordered it.
It should be fine but feel free to email them as well just to make sure. They have always gotten back to me.
Hi Peter. Aren't you worried about diffraction at F14 on a crop sensor camera? I´m kind of scared of pushing it beyond f11.
I’ve tested it numerous times, f/14 is still acceptable for single shots but f/8-f/11 is a tad sharper. I think the optics of the 100mm is exceptional so can push it much further than e.g. the Laowa 2.5-5x ( well obviously gonna be much more noticeable because of the higher magnification ratio ). Initially I only used to shoot at f/8 myself😀. If f/11 gives you the best results then I’d stick with that.😉 Cheers
Incidentally, I tend to use one of those rectangular foldaway softbox/diffusor things that you strap on to the head of the flash, or my homemade (from a Pringles tube) contraption.
@@peterviragphoto Thanks, I think I'll try pushing it up a bit. I use a Canon 90D with the Tamron 90 mm macro lens (the newer version). I loved the flying insect photos in your other video, by the way. Absolutely fantastic shots.
Thanks heaps for the kind words, appreciate it. I think the 90D can definitely be pushed a little further than the 80D. Have fun experimenting:)
Awesome! Pringles are fun ( and yumm )😀😀👍👍
But with ur fav choice the power from the flash must be reduced a lot.
Yes it is significantly reduced as the light has to travel through multiple layers/bounce off .
Crafty Bells is no longer in operation. Do you know of anything similar from another company?
Yes, unfortunately they closed their business earlier this year:( Maybe try Cygnustech or AK Diffuser. Cheers
I don’t think you can be objective in respective of the highlights on the ichneumon given the insect was photographed at varying angles and some parts of its body are likely more reflective than others.
Yes, that might be true but overall the conclusions are representative. I’ve done many other tests before/since. Thanks for dropping by. All the best to you Roy!👍
is crafy bells out of business
Hi Joe. At one stage the business was going to be bought but it looks like the deal didn’t go through:(
do you know I follow your video
Thx!
