@@firstname5373 the work " speak" is a Malay word meaning " kicking"
Takraw is Thai word for Rattan ball. The old name is Sepak Raga. Raga is a Malay word for Rattan ball.
There is an interesting twist in this sport. It was reported in annal history of Malaysia.
Way back in 15 th century, a group of young men were playing this sport. One of them was the son of the Prime Minister.
A royal entourage was passing through. The Crown Prince was riding his horse in that profession.
The son of the Prime Minister kicked the ball and it went straight to the head gear of the Crown Prince
He was very upset and killed the son of the Prime Minister.
The folks were very upset and went straight to the palace to attack the Sultan.
Upon hearing the news, the Prime Minister quickly pacifier th and reminded them it was not the Malay culture to wage war against a Sultan.
He however said he would never recognise the Crown Prince as future Sultan.
It had far implication as in Malay culture, approval of the Prime Minister was needed to approve ascension to the throne.
The Sultan banished his son to the neighbouring state

In Thailand we call it "Takraw" only, Takraw is a Thai word means "muzzle, woven rattan ball, or woven things".
And Sepak is a Malay word means "kick". So Sepak Takraw is from Malay+Thai word means "kick woven rattan ball" that is used to call this sport in the present.

I'm an English guy living on a small island in Thailand, and you will often see friends playing this on bits of spare land. Thailand is one of the best in the world, and the top level players can deliberately hit the top of the net on a serve so that the ball drops dead on the other side... they can jump up to play a 'smash' but then change and use the sole of their shoe to make a drop shot... amazing! The 'ball' is made from rattan cane or a plastic, and is not 'soft'! Love watching this game!

    1) The ball is traditionally made of woven rattan/wicker. It's hollow, but lightweight and flexible. In these modern times though light plastic can simulate the same thing.
    2) There's no springboard... All those guys are jumping for real. Yeah it's mind-blowing.

This game revolve not only a tactic of how to defeating an opponent but the most important is to fight with your own mental. The players play their own role and a 'Killer' is the one who you saw doing summersault to smack the ball down to touch the floor of the opponent court. The Sepak (kick) Takraw (name of the rattan ball).., a hand full size of ball is relatively hard. Player must carefully avoid for the ball to being hit their face as it may cause the player lose their teeth easily. This torturing game play with pride and each opponent team will mocking the opponent when they score a point. When the opponent raise temper, they will lost their focus and will keeps loosing until defeated. Game over once the score reach 15 points.

Takraw is popular in SEA. 3 players for each team. Striker and Setter (who set the ball for Striker in last hit) are in the front of their own field. Server in the back. Each team has only 3 hits to send the ball to another side (same as volleyball). No spring on the floor buddy :). They practice again and again. Jump > float in the air > hit the ball > one of the leg will be pivot point for full flip kick. Awesome reaction. From Thailand :)

Traditional game originally from Malay Archioelago..Known as "sepak raga"..Played in a circle, with 5-7 peoples as to fill leisure time..Those days, we called the ball as "rattan ball" coz its made out of rattan..Nowadays, its became "synthetic ball"..
If my mind serves me right..USA did have their "sepak takraw team" during 80s and 90s and as a beginner they played well.."Sepak takraw" in Malaysia is like a baseball in USA..Very popular in South East Asia region..
Suggest you to search history of "sepak takraw" and very sure you'll love it..👍👍👍

Find a filipino/malaysian/korean friend they will introduce it to you the basics of sepak takraw. Early when your young in elementary you can practice and join clubs that plays sepak and if you are good enough you can be a varsity and represent your schools. There jumps are higher cuz they practice sepak in early age. One of the basic drills is to jump. Block headbutt, serve.

This sport has been played for over 100 years but not included in Olimpic games... why..?
The original ball was made from wood(rattan), it is quite heavy but no other can play with Thailand with a wood ball. Then, we change the ball to plastic to make the game look near (closer performance).

      wood ball? rattan ball right..

Rattan not wood. Wood is hard would break your leg or head.
Maybe thais play with a wooden ball that doesnt bounce. Or thais have steel legs. 😁

Actually according to Malaysian royal history, it was played since 15th century. So it has been around 600 years ago, not 100 years as you said.
