This video really "hit close to home" for me. I've stuttered for over forty years because of having the illness called Reye's Syndrome at the age of ten back in 1978. Although most people knew of why I talked like I do, I still had those few people who would constantly "tease" me about my stuttering and my low - tone of voice. I am a female, and, one bully would tease me by saying "Man Talk! Man Talk!" That made me more or less shut down, and, it took years for me to realize how that person was wrong with thinking how she did. I still struggle with speaking now, but, I don't let it stop me from speaking to anyone. The only thing I don't really like doing is talking on the phone. I've tried the "slow down and think about what you're going to say" method. It helps me some, but, I still stutter a LOT. But, I refuse to let my "speech impediment" rule my life. Thank you to whoever put this video out here.

I'm very grateful for my disabilities. It helps me to quickly identify people worth getting to know versus people I should avoid, based on how they react to me. In short, it really helps weed out the "jerks" very quickly. There was a time when I worried about "what would people think", before I realized that what they think is their problem and I'm better off if I don't have to be around it.

This story misses the mark and makes several significant errors. It implies the girl must rise to the occasion to defeat her stuttering and that even the cruelty from the boy somehow motivated her in part. That places the obligation on the person with the disability/disadvantage to somehow overcome that disability/disadvantage. What's worse, it suggests you could cure stuttering if you just tried harder. So, while the story had a happy ending, it got there in the worst way.

    • @andreaanderson1580

Was looking in the comments for this exactly. It is an ableist point of view that to overcome a disability one only has to have a positive outlook. Sometimes this works but most of the time it just compounds the issues. It is similar to someone having a broken leg and telling them that they can still run a marathon.

I had been stuttering since i was 5. I've also faced many problems...couldn't get a chance to finish what i wished to say. I had horrible problems with stuttering for a while back in hellementary school, but thankfully for me a professional speech therapist was able to help me to get rid of the stutters. Out of everything that she taught me, what helped me the most was being shown how the tongue moves during sounds and words (Hearing them slowly so I could see the exact movements), and the emphasis on the sounds of the vowels, like the a in apple, the e in egg, the i in igloo, the o in ostrich, the u in umbrella, then the 3 ys (Yellow, Dry and Lucky). But most importantly, lots of knowledge, repetition, compassion and patience from someone who truly wanted (And knew how) to help me :)

Stumaring and stuttering isn't a result of fear or nervousness, it's a real disability . Any change in emotional worsens it,be it fear, anxiety , excitement. Among other things that can help is doing mouth exercises, learning to talk slowly, and taking Vitamin B6 ( these were recommended by the medical doctor ).Also learning to control emotions is very important.
Its unfortunately that suffers are usually bullied. I have battled this for so many years, and I remember being bullied for many years in school despite being among the top students, this robbed me of self esteem. Its quiet sad mostly many do not view this as a real disability.
I have improved so much over years.

Like this really really pisses me off. She wouldn't do any kind of presentation at all and if she did I sat outside the classroom and made sure if she was upset I was there.
