Thanks for this! 0:00 INTRO - Thought the topic was going to be about technical mistakes, then put out a FB poll: "Followers, in your opinion, what are the biggest mistakes leaders do in their dancing" 0:32 Results were less to do with technical leading, and more to do with attitude, connection, feedback, musicality. 1:19 #1: "UNDERSTANDING THE FOLLOWER" - Leader starts dancing. Doesn't seem to try to make a connection. Doesn't care about the follower's level, or maybe about the music. "Whatever he wants to do, he will do" -- Listen more to the Follower - Find just the level where she's at - Gradually increase the level - If it doesn't work the first time, can try again but focus on your leading. If it still doesn't work, can let it go "because I don't want to stand and teach on the dance floor". Don't try to force moves. 3:31 #2 "CORRECTING THE FOLLOWER ON THE DANCE FLOOR" - "When you try to explain moves on the dance floor, it's not social dance anymore, it's choreography". If it's not clear enough, it's not clear enough. It can be because of the follower also, but then it's back to the leader, because he didn't know her level. Try to make her think, "Ah! Cool! I didn't know I could do that" instead of making her think that, "Ah, he thinks he's my teacher" 5:07 #3 "TOO ROUGH LEADING" - Holding too tight, too much force. Dance is art, and art is delicate, it's never with force, art is precise. Lead as soft as you possibly can. You might need to be a little more firm with a beginner to send clear signals, but you never need to use force. Followers, if you feel tension, give tension back, don't change too much the angles in your joints because then you become less responsive to the leading. 6:30 #4 Valid for everyone: "HYGIENE" 7:17 #5 Came as a big surprise for Kristofer: "SAY THANK YOU BACK"
WOW! Love it how you are so open and real! From the standpoint of a follower (myself) is so important when the leader really pays attention to the level the follower may be at! I really like your attitude to try and raise the bar some! It also shows that you trust her to have the ability to actually perform better...

Thank you! =) Yeah, that was the most important thing ladies mentioned. You see it all the time, so it is important we learn to take better care and create some connection first. =)
Great tips. I really appreciate it when the guys bring a shirt to change during the night. Particularly during the hot Aussie weather as it shows respect for the lady, as it isn't nice to be pressed up against a chest that is saturated in sweat.

Thanks! For sure! The hygiene point goes both ways though! There are considerations the ladies have to take too.
yes 3 shirts in the summer is necessary, but sometimes girls must to do too . And when you dance a lot every time it's a problem ... Sometime egality of wet is good but very strange but good. And the problem sometime a lot of girl doesn't dance because leaders missing and we haven't the same level of wet. have good dance !
on 1 & 2, problem is that leaders dont know strong basics!!!! on festivals rare teach it, all festivals ar for intermediate and +. Thans the problem. Lot of leaders dont know how to do corectly retrocesso & virgula!

Yes, very true! I learnt in festivals myself, because when I learnt there was no kizomba in Stockholm where I live. But, there is no good progression in festivals. And beginner classes are not really beginner classes.
I think that one of the traps when learning couples dancing is trying to replicate what we see amazing dancers doing before we have the connection necessary to make the move sequences possible. Followers also, understandably, want to be successful and so can "backlead" in an attempt to get the move accomplished. However this creates an odd dynamic because the follower is no longer following. I truly appreciate followers who will allow me to fail so that I can figure out where the problem(s) are happening. You're an excellent instructor Kristofer. I enjoy the way in which you get the information across to students.
This is like women saying what kind of men they are looking for but going for exactly the opposite - bad boys who don´t care about them and treat them like shit. 1:30 - You just described men, women love to dance with. "It doesn´t matter and I don´t care" - that kind of attitude women love.

Interesting point you make. I never thought about that comparison. But yes, in some cases it seems to be the case.
Tough leading is my point... Sometimes it must I feel it must be.... Perhaps I have to reduce the view on the level. Everything else is clear and practice... One beg eaven if it's not the theme here. Followers pls just follow to what you feel not follow to what you are thinking..... Thx...

And here are the biggest mistakes ladies / followers do: ruclips.net/video/DfBs1_O5EJY/видео.html
This is great feedback for leaders not often discussed, and can definitely be applied to salsa and bachata. Thank you!
Thank you very much! Yes, most leading technique can be applied on most dances I would say. =)
Thanks for this!
