Operation Rolling Thunder isn't going well for the United States. The North Vietnamese VPAF have acquired the potent MiG-21 interceptor, but fighter ace Robin Olds hatches a plan. He sets a trap, "in disguise" as F-105 Thunderchiefs, his wing of F-4 Phantom fighters will lie in wait to surprise and destroy the MiGs.

I think the bolo he was referring to was the groucho bolo. It's three strands of cordage with balls attached at the ends. You twirl the bolo around your head then let go to hit your target. Which describes what they were doing in combat.
Given world of tanks has helped find tank museums and renovating old tanks, this is a very sensible choice for a sponsor. Appreciate the integrity with the reupload, very few creators have such
better sponsor than betterhelp lol
Will you please make the operation postmasters?
Feel Like a real tank commander, does a 360 flip in a tank.
For those that wonder why this was re-uploaded the original sponsor for this video was Better Help and the operations room didn’t know about their shadiness until people pointed it out in the original release.

Man that wouldve been frustrating for those pilots having textbook shots and the missiles failing to ignite or track
Reminds one of the Mark 14 submarine torpedos.
AIM-7 Sparrows had a bad reputation. AIM-9 Sidewinders, not so much but the ones used in the video were young.
Today, the AIM-9X is super deadly. Its highly accurate, fast and VERY maneuverable. For example, the F-35 Lightning to use IR receivers that can detect targets 360 in any direction and the pilots can track and lock onto them. The AIM-9X can be fired at any target in any direction and turn almost immediately to fly at the target. I'm pretty sure the F-15EX Eagle II might have similar targeting capability but that plane can literally carry a dozen or more missiles.
@@thudthud5423 And for the record, the last versions of the Sparrow were a lot better, too, scoring several kills in the Gulf War. By the 1980s these missiles had all been upgraded with way better electronics and made more reliable.
@@thudthud5423 But how do they handle the tropical environment? If the modern versions electronics are still vulnerable to the tropical conditions, they're no better than they were in the 70s.
AND they didn’t even have cannons early in the war 💀
Robin Old's mustache alone made him a legend in the USAF; the fact that he was the proverbial fighter pilot's fighter pilot was just icing on the cake.
That is certainly a magnificent lip sweater, as TFE called it.
@benn454 yep, and if I remember correctly, all the rest of the Wolfpack decided to emulate the boss and grow their own.
Icing is literally the reason he had to shave it off when he retired. As the mou iced up when he was skiing, complete with snot.
Its incredible seeing someone actually cancelling the sponsorship and even reuploading. Much respect to you sir
3:50 That’s my wives uncle smiling talking with Olds. His name was Bill Kirk and he knocked down 2 MIG 21s during his time in Vietnam. He was there on the BOLO Mission. Kirk would retire a 4 Star general and head all USAF personnel in Europe in 1989. Kirk was also the godfather of the Red Flag exercise in Nevada each year. Kirk actually gave Robin Olds his check out flight in the F-4 Phantom before Olds left for Vietnam. Not bad for a country boy from northeast Louisiana! 😊❤

Not getting Ace status just so you can keep fighting is a gigachad move
Does that mean he ceased flying air-to-air combat missions, otherwise wouldn't that be abandoning duty?
He also managed to get ahold of the mission log books and fudged his mission count to stay in the fight. In Vietnam, pilots were rotated out after 100 missions. Following his retirement, Olds estimated he flew close to 200 missions over Vietnam. True Warrior.
Fun fact: despite the fact that the F-4C didn't have an internal gun, it scored more air to air gun kills (using gun pods) during the Vietnam war than the F-4E (the variant with an internal gun) did during the entirety of its service life with the USAF.
Better training and missile reliability I image helped.
The Navy F4 Phantoms were aided by TOPGUN being formed.

This period of air combat history is so fascinating. Jets had advanced to the point of being recognizably "modern" with avionics, supersonic speeds, and guided missiles but due to the limitations of early electronics you still had close quarters dogfights like this. These episodes on the air battles of the Vietnam, Arab-Israeli and Indo-Pakistani wars are especially interesting because of that aspect.
i just don't understand what was the Vietnamese tactic here. Other then the first Mig, did they even attack? They didn't carry missiles at all? Why did they show up piecemeal? They seem to be criss-crossing the path of the americans without any kind of logic. Would love to see this engagement from the Vietnamese perspective, they must have analyzed this engagement considering the serious losses they had.
@@thingamajigwhy would they carry missiles to shoot down slow and heavy bombers?
@@thingamajig The VPAF had fallen into habit. Since the US planners kept doing practically the same thing. The Vietnamese controllers would listen to the transmissions and specifically target the slow & heavily laden US bombers with their MiGs because those bombers were easy targets. The MiGs would launch once GCI told them the bombers were coming and the MiGs would quickly streak through the formation, shooting as they go, then bug out back to base where they would be safe. Because the White House prohibited it's forces from attacking them. The ruse tricked them into attacking the US fighters instead of the bombers this time. The VPAF temporarily suspended their interceptions until they figured out a new doctrine afterward and could get replacements.
+1,000,000 integrity points for re-uploading this video with new sponsors.
@TheOperationsRoom , I just wanted to thank you so much for the willingness to reupload your video with a different sponsor. I commented on the first version expressing my disappointment, and the fact that you were willing to reupload means so much to me and so many others. And i will give a comment for the algoritm

@@TheOperationsRoom no sir thank you!
@@chardaskie also his code is great, really nice bonuses for new players
No thanks. WoT is a trash, exploitative game (with token backtracking to buy back consumer good will). Only reason its not morally wrong is because they moved out of Russia and headquartered in France after Russia started their invasion and attempted genocide of Ukraine.
Unlike War Thunder devs, Gaijin, who moved to Hungary and Cyprus "officially" (one is a Russian-puppeteered and corrupt shithole thanks to Orban, and the other is a notorious tax haven for Russian companies) to pretend they are no longer Russian not long after the start of hostilities in 2014, and have been caught giving money to Pro-Russian "separatists" in Ukraine. They moved to avoid the heavy taxes, that's it. Their real offices are still in Russia, the locations on their websites are "shells" to get around taxes and abuse EU tax loopholes (a common tactic for international companies, especially corrupt ones). All of their main employees and executives are in Russia. Someone went to their HQ in Budapest last year and only a handful of people were there, less than 10.

Thank god you reuploaded it
Olds didn't really avoid becoming an ace, he was already a double ace coming out of WWII. He became a triple ace in Vietnam with his 4 jet kills, for a total of 16. You're right, though, he knew if he scored 5 in Vietnam then they'd pull him out. Rumor is that he deliberately let his wingmen take shots he could've taken to avoid this.
why do they pull out aces?
@@RainCanadian PR purposes would be my guess, probably not wanting a hero to get killed after becoming famous. Kind of like how John Glenn and Neil Armstrong became heroes they never got to fly in space again.
He couldn't do what he did best and fly planes he'd be treated as a celebrity and be grounded while his squadron was being lead by someone else
@@RCAvhstape John Glenn flew again in the shuttle in '98. They wanted to study the effects of space travel on an older body. But I guess by that point the hero thing wasn't a big deal any more.
@@Mk-qb2ny No, it was definitely still a thing, but after almost 40 years since his historic flight, NASA was now risking his life for PR purposes, just like they did with Krista McAuliffe in 1986. Or so astronaut Mike Mullane argues in his book.
