Wow, that's weird! I normally expect high quality blades from Darkwood. Well, flaws in the steel happen... I'm sure they'll replace it for free. Always nice to see you experiment with so many different weapons by the way.
No, Skal! It's the inherently magical lightsaber qualities of the katana! 😜 I suppose a sturdier blade is needed for this. Maybe that line of Kveton blunt sabers that Matt Easton is always promoting?
@skallagrim What do you think of their Miyamoto Musashi Dual blade sparring videos and the general technique, if i may ask? I personally think its some of their most entertaining videos and some of the most thought provoking personally, but I'd like to know what other's think. : )
@@SirConto it depends on the quality of the blade. FIE approved blades generally last around 6 months to a year, and costs around 140 USD. Cheap ones, depending on how much you parry, can last a low of one month, but it only costs around 30 USD. You can only use FIE approved blades for international competitions tho.
As a former saber as well (not olympic) I would also like to add that we do not use full swings like that on a sword that parries. The olympic sabers are made for contact mostly and do not account for heavy parries. A saber that is more akin to a polish saber will probably be better for a real sword fight.
As an Spanish fencer of rapier and saber I have to dissagree. The dueling saber is a very good obtiene to do this, specially because the katana is also a dueling sword. The Polish saber, as you said, is for cavalery, for war, is not designed for dueling, dispait you can duel with it.
I might suggest a Kvetun Easton Mk. 3 Saber. It's a military style saber with a much beefier blade, a lot better for doing mixed weapons stuff. I used one in the Open Steel event at IceBreaker 2022 and it stood up well to shields and longswords.
I believe the saber was Darkwood's Italian Dueling saber. It's a fine weapon as far as it goes, but it's a light-bladed saber designed for dueling against a similar-style weapon. it's not meant for any kind of heavy combat against even other style sabers like the polish military saber. They have a heavier, more military grade blade available that would be far more appropriate. Castille has several saber models available as well, which I personally have used very often against longswords for years, and they stand up very well.
That was beautiful… You guys need to talk to some HEMA people for a Sabre- that looks more like an Olympic sport style fencing, saber- which will have a great advantage in speed because it’s so late compared to a real one.
British or Polish military sabre should be able to fare better, I think. That type of sword, if I remember right, is more so for duels rather than battlefields, a more fitting sword would be one of the battlefield sabres, especially cavalry sabres, those things can be tough.
Yeah, but a cavalry sabre wouldn't be safe for sparring unless the user has loads of control. Certainly, any military sabre would be better than a duelist sabre, but I think either the weapon took a beating previous to this or it had a construction defect. The sabre broke on its own cut against a static parry.
Honestly, a saber of the Kościuszkówka type or similar would work far better for such a duel. Or, if you want a a bit straighter blade profile Batorówka-type saber could be a nice fit for 'vs katana' duel.
Man, that sucks. I really wanted to see this interesting kind of duell. Guess they will give you back the money or send you a good one, becuse it is very clear, that this blade is rubbish, no matter how hrd the katana blade is.
The katana depth (edge to back dimension) is much greater than the saber, making it much stiffer. Stiffness is proportional to the square of the depth of the blade.
That's clearly a manufacturing defect of some sort. They will probably replace the sword if you send it back to the sellers and tell them what happened..
Thank you, that seems to be correct. Not the style of sabre I'd have chosen to match against a katana - which is essentially a short-ish, thick steel bar.
@@mrgoober6320 Agreed, not an especially good style to take the kind of abuse fencing with a katana is likely to cause, but it for sure shouldn't have broken as easily as it did. Must have been a manufacturing flaw of some kind.
1:12 well in a real battlefield the sabre would have not been a sports sabre. :-) but still - you'd expect the damn thing to actually last more than a few hits, lol
This was clearly a poorly-fabricated saber. A good steel should not have broken that way. Maybe they forgot to temper the blade. Maybe the blade had a flaw or crack from the original tempering process. I wouldn't buy another one from that manufacturer.
Funny story, got a VB from PHA, had zero flex so Wasn't safe for sparring at all, I returned it and got a darkwood witch was a big upgrade, five years of weekly sparring and tournaments and it's still better than any VB I ever held. Tho PHA is a reseller so they carry other swords now as well. Swords that are still made by hand can have defects, judge a company by how cool they are about fixing an issue.
Love how the names of the sword changes depending on the country. Saber ,Sable ,Sabre, broadsword are all used here to describe the Chinese Doa ? The Jian demoted to merely the straight Sword ! There doesn't seem to be any agreement or even knowledge of H.E.M.A broadswords or a true Eastern Europe Saber ! Im in shock because i came to learn the Rapier but most have no idea of it ? Daddy Skullgrim knows about Weponism 😮
Bro, he struck the katana with the saber and I just died on the spot laughing.
As an Olympic fencer, and with how frequently blades break in the sport, this hurts me to my bone
Wow, never knew that happens. How often does that happen? And how much does it cost to replace it?

It's 1000000% times worse with HEMA. This Darkwood Dueling saber blade is $165, even more than a bunch of FIE Blades

Can cut through any European sword - as long as the European sword is a renaissance era fencing sword and not anything heavier. XD

There are sabers designed to take heavy blows. Springy steel. Katanas usually are stiff. There are heavy sabers. Fencing models are weak.
The legend of the Katana grows
That saber look rather thin almost Olympic saber thin. I would recommend something like an Easton sabre 3 by Kvetun armory.
Back at it again with the classy saber. Such a shame for what happened to it though...
The katana depth (edge to back dimension) is much greater than the saber, making it much stiffer. Stiffness is proportional to the square of the depth of the blade.
Bad heat treatment, look at the grain structure where the break in the blade occurred, it is likely very uneven.
