The new one's sound effects sound exactly like they fired up the original game on the lowest sound settings (8khz 8bit), recorded samples and put it in the new game thinking "ah, it's old, of course it sounds like shit". What a shame.

They had John St. John (Duke) rerecord all the lines and new ones for 20th Anniversary so the voice audio quality sounds almost out of place because it is so clean compared to the old audio for everything else.
I have the game on my PS4 and yes I have played the original one but I don’t understand why people are whining so much on the 20th anniversary like I have it and I think the game is great and I think the sounds are much but in the 20th no offense but for me this is just classic duke nukem
If I had both versions I could probably make a sound pack with the megaton soundfiles for effekts but with the voice of this version I would downsample the voice but just a bit to match the overall theme.
Funny thing is, i've first experienced Duke Nukem 3D on my Sega Saturn when i was a kid, this port of the game did feature dynamic lighting like the 20th anniversary does, and it was an incredible port for the console.
What the fuck have they done to the sound in 20thA version!? Did they compress it even more.... and Duke's new recorded lines sounds so bad. They should have let LGR done the voice instead.
Tell me about it. The new voice recordings throw everything off and the sfx(sound effects) sound muffled. I liked the original and Megatron edition because at least everything was consistent. It's awkward hearing the old sound of an enemy getting killed(from 1996) then you get a nice, crisp voice clip from Jon(2016)
While the new voice does sound pretty damn good, it just doesn't fit with the retro (and now shit quality) sound effects of the original. There is an option to turn on "Legacy Duke", but it sounds as bad as the rest of the game.
DukeNukem2020 Nonono. That's not what I'm saying. I love the old sound effects, but the compression in World Tour is so bad that it makes the new Duke lines sound bad with it, and the Legacy Duke option has the same compression issues. The DOS version was the first one I played many years ago and none of the ports have stood up to it in terms of nostalgia and quality.
Pepman True. The World Tour edition sounds like shit compared to the original(1996) and Megaton editions. I don't know why they didn't revamp all sound effects to keep everything sounding good and consistent
Nícolas Mallmann you make some good points. I meant it in a half jokingly way. But yeah it would be cool to hear him criticize the sjw crowd and how ridiculous they are. That crowd would have a field day with duke nukem forever lol.
I actually like that they kept a classic look to the sprites and textures in the 20th Anniversary version; the crappy filtering on Megaton makes everything look super muddled and flat (especially in darker areas). The look of the 20th Anniv. version + sound from the Megaton = $$$
Lol everyone turns it off. The uploader just played it with. I like that Megaton actually has health kits with crosses unlike pills. Its the same r3tard3d thing Doom did. But Left 4 Dead had the balls to show the finger.
@@CrysisFear what did Doom do that was so 'r3tard3d' and why do people care so much about a simple visual difference that has little bearing on the product?
@@samcooper2474 Bend the Knee towards the Red Cross who monopolized an ancient symbol. Having pills as aid instead of crosses is r3tard3d because it actually emphases drug use.
i remember buying the game when it came out forthe first time and i also remember when i got the game for free inside a pc gamer magazine a while back.
It does sound 22 kHz with the lack of brightness. The highest nyquist frequency it could produce is 11 kHz which is below the max threshold of human hearing. I think you're right! It would have been much nicer if they did it at the DVD 48 kHz. I guess the reason why they didn't is because they didn't want to redo all of the sound effects.
IMHO, the sound Quality on the 20th Aniversary take isn't muffled or anything. It's just played back at 22khz instead of the horrible 48khz resampling from the megaton edition. This one sounds way more like it SHOULD be.
I don't know much about sampling but i had played it in a sound blaster 16 and a sound blaster 32 (a master piece of its time), and trust me the sound on the SB32 was almost the same of this in the megaton edition and was a lot better compared to the SB16. The aniversary edition have something diferent in it, the overall sounds like SB16 (and it's crap as hell like it was in the past) but duke's voice sounds like modern games voices, and that's amazing. ATM I hate and love what they made at the same intensity.
Michael, I respect your opinion, but what the fuck, dude. IMO, the Megaton edition sounds crisp as fuck, and the 20th Anniversary sounds muffled and shitty, especially compared to Duke's newly recorded lines.
The megaton edition has weird smooth filters and the 20th anniversary version has super intense red tones, weird excessive contrasts and bad sound. It would be good if there was an option to play this with original graphics and sounds, because that appears to be the version still. The Day of Tentacle remake actually had that option - so good!
You can play with old graphics. I have it and you can disable 3d rendering and ambient oclusión! :) After 15 minutes of playthrough you don't even notice the sound changes they have made
I think World Tour looks the best, but the sound is a noticeable issue. It almost seems like they just used the sound files directly off of the original game instead of finding them from the sound library they came from.
It reminds me of what happened with Quake 64, back when it was ported to N64. Coloured lights just sort of thrown in everywhere for the sake of it. I don't think the visual additions really do much for the game over what we had before, and the disparity in sound quality is jarring to say the least, and inexplicable. A 20 year old game shouldn't really sound better via DOSbox than it does in a modern Windows port.
David Taylor Personally, I think most of them work, especially the ones where it would make sense to have one. There's a couple that need to be turned down though, like the one from the Balls of Steel pinball machine. I also hear that the sound files are pretty easily accessed, so swapping them for the ones from the DOS version or Megaton is pretty simple. They should have been better-quality in the first place, but still.
TheGrayMysterious Well it's a matter of taste obviously, so each to their own. As for the sound though, it's pretty outrageous that the customer has to dick around to fix the game's audio, especially with the price tag that the 20th Anniversary edition has.
TheGrayMysterious I just don't really see enough in this new version to warrant the price of entry. The new episode seems gimmicky, considering the age of the game, as a draw, and there isn't a whole lot else going on. I'm pretty content with the versions I've got already, and I don't know as I believe that this 20th Anniversary version will draw in anyone new either. We shall see I suppose.
The things that were good with the Megaton Edition - that the corners of everything was more smoother and not blocky and full of pixels, like the corners of the weapons and the enemies for example that is very noticeable (3:22 for a very good exemple of what I'm talking about) - The font over the Health, Armor, Weapons, Ammo, Inventory and Keys boxes was way better and easier to read than the text made of pixels So why did they put back the aliasing (pixel corners) around everything ? The things that are good with the World tour version is that the colors of the scenery is better and there is pretty good lightning and also the voice (of Duke) isn't muffled anymore but we can't say the same thing about the other sound effects...
i actually compared the lightning on world tour and eduke32 using original textures. the result is surprising as the world tour has more colorful lightning and depth to the original textures using some sort of lightmapping while eduke 32 has dynamic lights and shadows its a tough call and i think that eduke32 lightmaps need to be reworked to be more colourful. cant decide wich version i like the most.
Kirill Apollyon You can play the new one like the old one by pressing the d pad down. The graphics change so basically you are getting two games in one.
I was ready to congratulate and thank you for using my Arachno SoundFont bank to record the main theme MIDI music ("Grabbag") in your video... Then, I downloaded Megaton Edition, and discovered that this version actually used OGG recordings of the original MIDI music, made with Arachno SoundFont, and bundled with the game without even notifying me about it... and the OGG files do not even come with any credit information indicating that they were recorded using my sounds! I would have liked to discover this fact BEFORE the release of this 20th edition and the withdrawal of the Megaton edition...
Of course! Go to arachnosoft.com and click on the "Download Arachno SoundFont (SF2 Format)" link in the left menu pane. You'll also find many tracks recorded with it (from games or not) in the "Arachno SoundFont" section of the website (there is a Duke Nukem 3D Music Pack as well).
I appreciate the effort of the developers on getting things going and not letting the title fade away overtime, but such a shame they let key details in the game get screwed up like this. I can't believe it!
For the 20th anniversary edition the reason duke is so slow is that he's not running there's a option in the settings so that he always runs and you can turn the legacy sounds on too
2:14 Alien: oh yeah, I'l just leave this loaded shotgun that I am extremely vulnerable to on the table near the entrance to the door of the room that I am in on the planet I am invading. what's the worst that could h-....oh shit, it's Duk **dies**
That's one of the most memorable parts of Duke3D for me, as a kid I'd feel like such a badass every time I grabbed the shotgun and effortlessly spun around to blast that guy.
Cool comparison. I have the Megaton edition and like it a lot so I guess it wouldn't be a good investment to ALSO get the 20th anniversary. That'd probably be a better purchase if I could choose between the two and still had none.
* Jon St. John's delivery on the rerecorded VO is terrible. * Adding colored lighting to a 2.5d game does not look good. * The sound quality somehow is worse. Whatever happened to leaving well enough alone. The only way to improve on Megaton edition would be to get all the original uncompressed sounds (that likely don't exist anymore) and redo all the sprites/textures true to the original (like Capcom did with Street Fighter 2 HD), then again, I'm not sure if that would look authentic.
Now if we could get a version with the texture filtering of the megaton edition and light effects of the world tour edition... maybe when it becomes 30 years old?
The voices are clearly better in the 20th Anniversary Edition. Now if we could mix up the graphics and sound of the Megaton Edition with the lights and voices of the 20th Anniversary Edition, THAT would be the best, awesomest edition of Duke Nukem 3D.
I think the biggest issue (for me) is the lighting. Portal Engine like Doom Engine had a proper dropoff on light sources, so the engine could be very bleak and gloomy in unlit areas. This was pretty well intentional. Duke's early levels are dark and they're bleak on purpose. In the 20th Anniversary they apparently missed the point, and just made everything bright, they defaulted all lights to on. They seem to have missed the point and decided that a world doesn't seem real unless every possible light imaginable is turned on. But why would the lights be on everywhere in the wee hours of the morning when every (common person) would be at home asleep? Duke3D - Exactly how they envisioned it Megaton - It smooths out the lights to make it seem a little more realistic looking, but the light and mood is intact 20th Ann - Do you like neon lights in your face no matter what? Too bad if you said no. HOWEVER, Megaton does have an issue with floaty controls. Feels like Duke Nukem is wearing a pair of inline skates with how fast he moves and how slowly he stops. I haven't played 20th to compare, but I remember back in 1996 how tight and precise the controls felt in comparison to Megaton.
I remember having way better audio quality in original version (it sounded more like Megaton on my old ALS120 card). Not to mention the newest crappy audio.
I think the original release is somehow the best. Megaton's audio is too sharp. I'd probably enjoy the 20th anniversary, but just like Spyro, I need the nostalgia to click.
I have no idea why they re-recorded all the lines in addition to dropping the sound quality to 22KHz in the 2016 edition. WTF? That's just really weird.
The Wandering Dovahkiin Yea, Actually Duke nukem is my fist FPS game. I played it when i was just 3 years old and sad to see how Gearbox ruined this masterpiece...
I recently bought it for the first time and after *3 HOURS* decided to play an user's map based on Doom... ONLY THEN the same thing cliked to me: "these alien sounds are the same as the zombies from Doom! lol".
I see several comments complaining about the sound quality in the 20th Anniversary one, I hadn't even noticed. _I'M_ bugged by the missing HUD elements, LOL! This video made me VERY interested in the Megaton version, though. :)
The texture filtering is grotesque and shouldn't even be a thing in the first place anyway, ask Doom players for their opinion on it being enabled by default in GZDoom. Also, you can just get Eduke32 + the original or megaton files, the PSX Sound pack and WIP 20th Anniversary Voice packs as well as the Roland music pack (recording of midis played on high fidelity midi module instead of recordings from a fake soundfont or windows' shitty default midi player), maybe the bloom mod if you're feeling lucky. Will look, sound and play better than all of them combined.
I think Megaton has the best sound while World Tour has the best lighting, but it's arguable on which of the two has the best graphics. If you want an improvement over the original release, you can't go wrong with The Megaton Edition. For an extra episode made by the original level designers, I'd wait for a Steam sale to get World Tour and grab the Retro Sound Pack from the Steam Community Hub.
The sound in Megaton is very compressed and because of this, for example, the screams of Octabrain hurt my ears. In fact, I prefer the muffled sound of the World Tour. They could do better only if they re-recorded all the sounds.
I have a question that I would like you to help me clarify (without first saying that until today I was unaware of the existence of the 20th anniversary edition and the megaton edition, strange as it may seem) and my doubt is the following 1) The 3 DLC that come in the megaton edition that are: Duke Caribbean: Life's a Beach Nuclear Winter Duke It Out in D.C. Are they included in the 20th anniversary edition?
@@Alejandro-JG And you were so right bro Or well, at least for my part I was looking and you can literally find the complete and free DLC So for my part I'm already fine
Not only old sounds were somehow made worse than they were in original, but Duke's lines are re-recorded, and now sound passionless and neutered. And now people don't get to hear Duke is his former glory, as Anniversary edition is the only version of Duke 3D that is avaliable on Steam. What a disgrace.
you can enable legacy option in the options you moron. Plus the Anniversary version has ambient occ and true3d which looks way better when aiming up and down since is not 2d.
It's almost as if he got excited at first, and got there just to see the guy who made him say "Bazinga!" standing there, he said to himself "Those Gearbox bastards are gonna pay for shitting up my lines!"
monolyth421 i think the problem was that he was told to sound like the 1996 dukelines, but there is just no anger or badassery as the old lines like "Damn! those alien bastards are gonna play! for shooting up my ride!"
As much as I grew up on the 96 version.. I really like the Megaton edition.. I find all the textures in the 20th Ann are super pixelated yet the Megaton has some nice smoothed out textures
But it works. All the sprites are replicated on the other side. Now check the reflections on the windows in ex. Watch Dogs. It shows a generic image of the city. inb4 I know true mirrors would impact performance in a huge sandbox game, nonethless it's fake and cheesy
I used to make maps in the old build editor that Duke uses. When you made a mirror you had to make a "blank" empty room behind the mirror that was the same size or larger then the one you wanted to mirror. This is because the game did pretty much what suuhls is trying to say; It "copied" a mirror version of the room and content and rendered that, including mirrored versions of any player or enemy sprites currently moving around in that room. Doing something similar in modern games would cause you to have to render the whole scene twice with all shaders and vertices repeated and cause much more performance impact then a few extra sprites and surfaces did in duke. What games do a lot of the time if they have reflections today is either a pre-rendered reflection map (basically just a texture based on the surroundings) or screen space reflections (this is a shader tech that does some computing magic using the already rendered frame to produce reflections (this is why you can't use reflections like this to look around corners etc cause it only reflects things already rendered in frame. (BF1 uses screen space reflections.)))
I'm not too big on the lighting effects in the 20th Anniversary World Tour edition but at least it doesn't look blurry like the Megaton edition does. I'm not sure if that's a filtering option in the settings or not. I know the Megaton edition was based on a pretty old port that hasn't been updated since 2005 so it's understandable for Gearbox to release a newer edition. It's just too bad they didn't use eduke32 instead as that is hands down the best source port imo or at the very least re-include the authorized expansions again as that seems to be everyones complaint about it (to my understanding the sound issues have since been fixed).
The re-recorded Duke lines are the nostalgic equivalent of going to see a childhood hero only to realize he's gained 100 pounds and acts like it's still 1996 as a psychological defense mechanism because his life has been on a downward spiral for the past 15 years.
We played all the build engine games (and older FPS games) with keyboard only back in the day. I bet I could still pummel some new young buck using key+mouse in build games, while I'd only use keyboard. Like second nature, man.
The motion sickness Duke Nukem use to give me in 96 was like being in a tugboat getting knocked back n forth into 60 foot waves, mixed with a killer hungover and the nauseous feeling of just coming off a roller coaster while stoned.. Duke Pukem...
Ja, hab ich mir auch gedacht, und vielleicht auch manche der Monsterlaute (wenn sie sich das erste Mal kenntlich machen) und Sounds beim Öffnen von Türen und Betägigen von Schaltern.
I liked Megaton for: The soundtrack was ran through a much better midi synthesizer than world tour was. You can hear the difference. Better looking user interface. It includes all the expansion packs. It came packaged with the full dos version included. It came with a copy of the build editor so that you can make your own levels. Why I liked World Tour: Lighting. New episode. Enhanced Duke voice, even if it sounds muffled. If someone finds a way to jam all that stuff together into 1 version it would be nice. I don't know why they didn't just add the world tour enhancements to megaton edition in the first place. Unless it's all about the shekels...
the sounds in the 20th anniversay sound like they put a tape recorder to the speaker and recorded the sounds but thats just my opinion no one has to agree with what i say
I don't understand... just WHAT exactly do people hate about Duke Nukem as a character?? Sure, he's cheesy and he's a womanizer, but is that really enough to absolutely hate a character? Do you know how many cheesy womanizing popular characters I can name off the top of my head?
This one was on my wishlist but I think I'll stick with Megaton - it was much truer to the original. I knew there were new dialogue lines from Jon st John but I didn't realize that included re-recording old lines and that was unnecessary, they might be by the same guy but they're different sounding enough to kill the nostalgia.
The World Tour version sounds awful. The only advantage is the graphics. And the added episode. But its also incomplete because it doesnt include the 3 expansions. Megaton Edition is best overall but is no longer available. So get Eduke32. If World Tour gets more patches, more graphics options and the expansions then I think it would be a must have. But at the moment its not.
Good memories of this game included map editor too. But I stopped this game while I spent at my college and university before joined GraalOnline Classic. That Duke player - that reminded me of my old killer called SAMAEL [KING OF THE ZONE] who was looked like Duke!
@Patrick Barsalou polymer looks good with hd textures but i still like world tour because it adds depth to the original textures, it would be cool to see someone bumpmap the classic textures and then use a classic voxelpack for eduke.
Did they record the voices on the 2016 version again? They dont sound compressed, they sound really different. And why the hell the 2016 version looks more pixelated than the 2013 one even though it seems to have new stuff like improved light effects? Hope they release a remaster/remake of Blood someday...
The sound in the 20th Anniversary Edition was compressed. I give them good marks for re recording Dukes voice but why compress the sound? The original game and Megaton versions are the best even though the lighting in the anniversary edition have been improved.
As far as the graphics are concerned. Is the lighting the only difference between the 20th and megaton? Obviously it is a big difference, but the megaton edition looks just as smooth and clean as the 20th. Anyone have a real answer for this?
Hey everyone, dont get too down on this game. I bought it and haven't played Duke since N64 -- so this is perfectly acceptable to me. It's fun and runs great on the PS4. My bro and I are playing it over on my channel if y'all want to see the game in action!
@Fodeli let the devil plays as he pleases. He is not judging people that likes the other versions. He just prefer the original versions, and stating it.
The lighting looks a lot better in the 20th anniversary edition. Everyone hates on this version but never mentions that part. Is there a way to get the overhauled lighting in other versions?
I prefer the 20th version over the Megaton, the lightning looks awesome and it doesn't add that ugly filter to the textures and sprites. I like my pixel art without filters!

yeah plus I think is better with the Legacy voice enabled.
Great explanation, I def noticed a huge increase in the sound quality of certain things, like Duke's voice.
I cannot believe they were bot able to hear the difference...the new version is fine when Duke is under the water..👊
gearbox can't even add buttons for vsync, frame cap or that crappy forced mouse acceleration
I trust my own ears, megaton edition sounds better. I missed out on Steam.
The new one's sound effects sound exactly like they fired up the original game on the lowest sound settings (8khz 8bit), recorded samples and put it in the new game thinking "ah, it's old, of course it sounds like shit". What a shame.
And they removed all the expansion packs that were included in Megaton. Gearbox and Randy are sleezebags.
Wait there was more that 5 episodes for Duke nukem 3d?
The only differences I can find are lighting, voice and sound quality, and in the original Duke Nukem, the medikits have red crosses, but the 20th anniversary world tour remake, they're replaced with red and white capsules(similar in Doom BFG edition) to respect the red cross organization.

the red cross organization is just a bunch of thieves and it was absolutely not to respect
The sound quality in the 20th anniversary edition is INCREDIBLY inconsistent. Someone should make a mod to fix it.
No, I played it on Nintendo switch, and it's ok.
World Tour Edition's Lighting & Graphics with Megaton Edition's Sound Effects would have been perfect. :D
Now only if there's a way to mod that.
And have the expansions of megaton with the new episode of world tour and you'd have the perfect remaster
The ZombieMan world tour dropped the expansions?
It's called eduke32

For my taste, the Megaton version looks best. Although I think the lighting in World Tour got improved quiet nicely.
but you are wrong, the Anniversary update adds true 3d to the environment which means no distorcion when looking up or down since is 3d rendererd.
+SuperHns "For my taste" His graphical preference can't really be wrong, since it's just that, a preference.
The sound quality is such a mixed bag in 20th Anniversary... :/
I think the voice sound realy good, but the weapons and monsters sound realy bad.
I think they were trying to find a middle ground but the trade of is the sound effect vs the voice
If I had both versions I could probably make a sound pack with the megaton soundfiles for effekts but with the voice of this version I would downsample the voice but just a bit to match the overall theme.
It seems to be that the new sound quality is missing some brightness. It could be fixed with some equalizing I think.
I think I try it. if it works like I want I make a Video with a new soundpack.
Pepman The sound effects are classic. You young kids are spoiled. I'm just saying the new voice clashes with the old school effects.
I don't know why they didn't revamp all sound effects to keep everything sounding good and consistent
the fact that a shit company like Gearbox is holding a great character like Duke hostage is pissing me off
@Nícolas Mallmann yes bruh u idiot Duke Nukem could be 100x better if it sold it's license to a better studio.
Nícolas Mallmann his character is needed these days more than ever.
You could turn it off
Lol everyone turns it off. The uploader just played it with. I like that Megaton actually has health kits with crosses unlike pills. Its the same r3tard3d thing Doom did. But Left 4 Dead had the balls to show the finger.
@@CrysisFear i think it have something to do with red cross organisation
@@CrysisFear what did Doom do that was so 'r3tard3d' and why do people care so much about a simple visual difference that has little bearing on the product?
@@samcooper2474 Bend the Knee towards the Red Cross who monopolized an ancient symbol. Having pills as aid instead of crosses is r3tard3d because it actually emphases drug use.
Megaton Edition is the best version so far...
But just because it has the Christmas expansion.
Megaton Edition had 3 expansions, as well as GNU/Linux and macOS support. Not to mention traditional quick save/load function...
REA987
yeah, but the Christmas expansion is so fun, and nostalgic. I prefer the new episode over the Washington expansion, and Life's a Beach.
Do you mean Duke: Nuclear Winter? Yeah, that was a nice addition.
i remember buying the game when it came out forthe first time and i also remember when i got the game for free inside a pc gamer magazine a while back.
Why does the 20th Anniversary edition sound so shitty?
Because someone left it at 22KHz instead of 44. I...don't even know why they did this. So stupid.
Also the new recorded lines make the contrast even worse.
at least the voice acting is 10 times better
imagine if they remake duke nukem 3D like they did for doom, omfg I would fall in love
If they just gave the entire franchise to ID software, I would be a happy man. Gearbox can go fuck themselves.
@@starfox300 OH MY GOD same here bro :)
Hopefully without holding the project off for 14 years
They'll censorship it 😞
Seriously, the sound quality sounds way more muffled than before.
IMHO, the sound Quality on the 20th Aniversary take isn't muffled or anything. It's just played back at 22khz instead of the horrible 48khz resampling from the megaton edition. This one sounds way more like it SHOULD be.
Still, I feel like they shouldn't have lowered it all that much.
ATM I hate and love what they made at the same intensity.
no it doesn't. it sounds WAY worse than the originals
Alles_Ratten Megaton edition has that option I think
David Taylor it's most definitely annoying to have to do so, but I'm at least thankful there's a way to fix the sound.
Best FPS of the 90's along with Doom.
BLOOD>DUKE 3D
The things that were good with the Megaton Edition
- that the corners of everything was more smoother and not blocky and full of pixels, like the corners of the weapons and the enemies for example that is very noticeable (3:22 for a very good exemple of what I'm talking about)
- The font over the Health, Armor, Weapons, Ammo, Inventory and Keys boxes was way better and easier to read than the text made of pixels
So why did they put back the aliasing (pixel corners) around everything ? The things that are good with the World tour version is that the colors of the scenery is better and there is pretty good lightning and also the voice (of Duke) isn't muffled anymore but we can't say the same thing about the other sound effects...
Man, the 20th anniversary release feels like such a downgrade
Megaton Edition is fucking better than 2016th version. Lmao. Get this crap back. If I may buy it so better w8 for sale or dont buy this "remake"
Agreed. The only thing the 2016 version has over Megaton is lighting.
i actually compared the lightning on world tour and eduke32 using original textures. the result is surprising as the world tour has more colorful lightning and depth to the original textures using some sort of lightmapping while eduke 32 has dynamic lights and shadows its a tough call and i think that eduke32 lightmaps need to be reworked to be more colourful. cant decide wich version i like the most.
Kirill Apollyon You can play the new one like the old one by pressing the d pad down. The graphics change so basically you are getting two games in one.
zyriuz2 lol you can change the style by pressing a button. Just like the remastered version of Halo.
Steven C yeah i know that i just compared the fanmade source port and the gearbox anniversary port since they look so similar.
lol the pistol sounds in the new one.

I would have liked to discover this fact BEFORE the release of this 20th edition and the withdrawal of the Megaton edition...
nobody gives a fuck
well that sucks people need to give credit where credit is due you can't just steal something and not giving you a credit and claim you own it
aren't you curious do you have a place where I could download the soundfont in a .sf2 format
Arachnosoft - Maxime Abbey thanks
If gearbox can fix the compressed audio then World tour would be the best of both worlds.
I appreciate the effort of the developers on getting things going and not letting the title fade away overtime, but such a shame they let key details in the game get screwed up like this. I can't believe it!
For the 20th anniversary edition the reason duke is so slow is that he's not running there's a option in the settings so that he always runs and you can turn the legacy sounds on too
3D rendering mode causes
game to freeze on PC.
how can i make it slow? mine is too fast

Duke Nukem 3D Megaton Edition is the BEST!
JCM i did not like the hd remake of street fighter, it looked to crisp in an emyty world, made it less
World Tour is 3D. Everything but the sprites were redone. It looks terrible up close, though.
Now if we could get a version with the texture filtering of the megaton edition and light effects of the world tour edition... maybe when it becomes 30 years old?
The new duke speak is nice but the sound effects are terrible in 20th.
@Slifers 23 they patched the sound effects?

The voices are clearly better in the 20th Anniversary Edition. Now if we could mix up the graphics and sound of the Megaton Edition with the lights and voices of the 20th Anniversary Edition, THAT would be the best, awesomest edition of Duke Nukem 3D.
speaking of which any idea how to get the aline world tour episode for megaton?
Give em ten years
I think the biggest issue (for me) is the lighting.
Duke3D - Exactly how they envisioned it
Megaton - It smooths out the lights to make it seem a little more realistic looking, but the light and mood is intact
20th Ann - Do you like neon lights in your face no matter what?
Totally Legit Gaming [TLEG] defeats the purpose of the change
There was also Duke Nukem 3D XBLA on the 360 in 2008. That would have been good to compare. It had different graphics like you're showing here.
xbla is based on the original, 4.3 aspect ratio you can run a filter on the graphics like in megaton edition.
What a great version that was.
I want this game same like doom 2016 :(
CALTRA I just beat doom 2016 I wanted a new game didn't have enough for gears 4 so I got doom story is alright
The Wandering Dovahkiin Yea, Actually Duke nukem is my fist FPS game. I played it when i was just 3 years old and sad to see how Gearbox ruined this masterpiece...
CALTRA My first fps was somthing for the gamecube I don't know what it was
Such memories of playing on T.E.N.
Miss that service...but not the days of having a 56k modem lol.
i had this game when it first came out, I NEVER remember the aliens dying and screaming like the zombie guys from Doom. Wtf?!
i like how the 20th anniversary edition sacrifices texture filtering and audio quality for slightly better lighting.
I don't understand why they fucked over the sound quality so bad in the 20th anniversary! It's so fucking dumb. The Megaton Edition was miles better.
I have a question that I would like you to help me clarify (without first saying that until today I was unaware of the existence of the 20th anniversary edition and the megaton edition, strange as it may seem)
and my doubt is the following
1) The 3 DLC that come in the megaton edition that are:
Duke Caribbean: Life's a Beach
Nuclear Winter
Duke It Out in D.C.
Are they included in the 20th anniversary edition?
I don't think so, the easiest way nowadays to have the expansions is with the Megaton Edition, the CDs of the expansions are very difficult to get.
@@Alejandro-JG And you were so right bro
Or well, at least for my part I was looking and you can literally find the complete and free DLC
So for my part I'm already fine
Not only old sounds were somehow made worse than they were in original, but Duke's lines are re-recorded, and now sound passionless and neutered. And now people don't get to hear Duke is his former glory, as Anniversary edition is the only version of Duke 3D that is avaliable on Steam.
What a disgrace.
*crycrycry*
You know there's an option to turn off the new duke talk and enable the classic, right?
you can enable legacy option in the options you moron. Plus the Anniversary version has ambient occ and true3d which looks way better when aiming up and down since is not 2d.
You know there's an option to go download the old one online for free and not worry about all this shit right?
Nice video :) Why is the sound in the 2016 version so fucking shit? :-( Been seeing many complaining about it!
Thanks!
The sound files have been heavily compressed so there is a loss in quality. The 2016 version is a crappy port made by lazy developers.
Don't have the anniversary one, but so sad! Megaton was an excellent edition, world tour looks and sounds terrible here... think I'll skip it!
go to bed randy
I still reckon it's one of the best games ever created.
Original sounds better than the 20th Anniversary edition
It sucks that Jon St. John doesn't care enough to do a proper impression of himself.
It's almost as if he got excited at first, and got there just to see the guy who made him say "Bazinga!" standing there, he said to himself "Those Gearbox bastards are gonna pay for shitting up my lines!"
monolyth421 He probably couldn't 2 flying ****** anymore because he even knows Duke is dead or has been for years unfortunately to some he is.
It sucks people don't even know how Duke sounds.
No doubt. He did a much better job for Duke 64 and that was a censored port.
monolyth421 i think the problem was that he was told to sound like the 1996 dukelines, but there is just no anger or badassery as the old lines like "Damn! those alien bastards are gonna play! for shooting up my ride!"
As much as I grew up on the 96 version.. I really like the Megaton edition.. I find all the textures in the 20th Ann are super pixelated yet the Megaton has some nice smoothed out textures
I'll keep my XBL, PC(1996 atomic edition) and Megaton editions. I'd rather spend $15 on FFVII
DukeNukem2020 Hey, Duke! You're a certified ass kicker!
ffvii is a good investment, i own megaton and xbl versions. dont see much other than coloured lighting in the "new" version
Damn i definitely need the Megaton Edition for my PS3. Looks awesome, a bit graphically softer, but it still looks good
You'd think they'd try and actually improve the sound quality and speed.
I love how smooth Megaton edition is
That moment when a game in 1996 had better reflection on that tech than most games have now on modern tech
This game hasn't got any reflections, it is the same room, just mirrored with a invisible wall in front of it.
But it works. All the sprites are replicated on the other side.
Now check the reflections on the windows in ex. Watch Dogs. It shows a generic image of the city.
inb4 I know true mirrors would impact performance in a huge sandbox game, nonethless it's fake and cheesy
+Suuhls
I know for fact that's not how mirrors in duke works.
I'm not sure how reflection in games work but effect should get at least partial credit.
Electric Blush Jesus Christ people I was just making a jok- Oh wait, this is the internet where everyone tries to make sense out of FUCKING JOKES!
I'll always consider the N64 version the superior one because it has two-player split screen. There's really nothing better than coop :D
nice job
Thanks
Feels like they´ve amped the voice in the lastest installment. I think audio in the Megaton edition is the better one. Thanks for this comparisson
Was there mouse look in DN3D 1996? I mean Quake had it
in the 1996 version you had to press "u" on the keyboard to activate it, but that wasn't very convenient
Umm no? You could've just set the option to use mouse for either as movement or looking around.
20th Anniversary is not Duke...

I liked Megaton for:
The soundtrack was ran through a much better midi synthesizer than world tour was. You can hear the difference.
Better looking user interface.
It includes all the expansion packs.
It came packaged with the full dos version included.
It came with a copy of the build editor so that you can make your own levels.
Why I liked World Tour:
Lighting.
I agree with what you say though
I like the "old" voice tone.
I don't understand... just WHAT exactly do people hate about Duke Nukem as a character?? Sure, he's cheesy and he's a womanizer, but is that really enough to absolutely hate a character? Do you know how many cheesy womanizing popular characters I can name off the top of my head?
Its none of that. Its how they did him in the newer games.
Thanks for the video..hmm...yup cash grab. Not worth it.
1996 Favorite
Why are the sound effects even MORE compressed in the 2016 version?
The World Tour version sounds awful. The only advantage is the graphics. And the added episode. But its also incomplete because it doesnt include the 3 expansions.
Megaton Edition is best overall but is no longer available. So get Eduke32.
If World Tour gets more patches, more graphics options and the expansions then I think it would be a must have. But at the moment its not.
The guns in world tour sound fine nowadays
Aside from some new lighting, where is the remastering they were talking about?

that's the duke that nukes em' for you voice acting so bad it's good especially the one-liners he has for every scenario.
where's the Nintendo 64 version that one was the best

dont for get the most toned down as well lol
Agent Phoenix Joseph yeah I am am aware of the censoring but it did had better graphics and more content then the psx version
Paw Hunter true and side ammo as well
Eduke32 is the best, where is it at? console versions sucked overall, you could not do much with them being on console.
Cory R You don't know what you're talking about.
Technically the Anniversary edition is more detailed and advanced but something about the Megaton edition visually appeals more to me
I dunno. The lighting is somehow more flat than the original and all of the crisp pixel art is blurred and muddy.
Good memories of this game included map editor too. But I stopped this game while I spent at my college and university before joined GraalOnline Classic. That Duke player - that reminded me of my old killer called SAMAEL [KING OF THE ZONE] who was looked like Duke!
can you do a comparison between the lighteffects found in eduke32s polymer render vs world tours lightningeffects?
@Patrick Barsalou polymer looks good with hd textures but i still like world tour because it adds depth to the original textures, it would be cool to see someone bumpmap the classic textures and then use a classic voxelpack for eduke.
Did they record the voices on the 2016 version again? They dont sound compressed, they sound really different. And why the hell the 2016 version looks more pixelated than the 2013 one even though it seems to have new stuff like improved light effects? Hope they release a remaster/remake of Blood someday...
Stunning audio for DN3D 20th Ann. when I played when I was young I played original DN3D, has fine audio.
So do i
Great video! Thanks!
Weapon sounds + weapon textures from the 2013, with the Duke voice and lighting from the 2016 would result in the best looking/sounding game
Our choice - Megaton
20th Anniversary lighting reminds me of Quake 2 and how it was all the rage when 3D cards were beginning to take off.
I like the original best because that's how everyone played the game back in the day.
@Fodeli let the devil plays as he pleases. He is not judging people that likes the other versions. He just prefer the original versions, and stating it.
apparently everyone who has different opinion is instantly a boomer lmao
Ok boomers
I prefer EDuke32 since it's a bit more accessible and it plays it with HD and not terrible mouse aiming.
@@suckturdslmao and also because of mods.
I like my pixel art without filters!
you can turn the filter off in megaton
