- The speed limit of vehicles on National Highways and Expressways in the country may soon increase, said Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari at the India Today Conclave 2021. Gadkari added that the Centre is in favor of increasing the speed limit to 140kmph, but the Supreme Court and the High Court need more convincing in this matter. However, a bill will soon be presented in Parliament for the same to amend the speed limit on Indian roads.

For 8lane(4+4lane) express ways only the right lane should have access to 140km/hr or 180 or 200 as you mentioned
Middle 2 lanes for 100-120 and the left lane to have less than 80kmph
The only major drawback for this is to make citizens understand all the rules, kyuki agar kisi bhi lane mein koi bi speed se chalaoge to it'll be a problem for everyone on road to drive at high speeds and low speeds

German rules. Uniform speed limit, but strict lane discipline. Everyone should drive only in one lane, and only when overtaking use the next lane. If someone is overtaking in that lane already, then use the lane after that and so on. Once overtaking is done, everyone should move back to the left most lane possible. This way right side lanes are always open for overtaking.

Mr Gadkari has made good roads but the time/to distance has either stayed stagnant or become late. In 1980 I could go from Bangalore to Ooty, about 300km in 4.5 to 5hours. Today, with better roads, better machines it takes 7 hours at the least. Random speed breakers, police check posts, toll booths all add to the delays not considering the increase in traffic. Containerization is another hindrance as the roads are NEVER as good as tarmac roads. So, eventually it all goes back to the same thing..slow speeds, whatever the infrastructure may be..

There is no point in increasing speed limit if 4 trucks block all lanes going alongside at much lower speed. We can't even maintain the speed of 80km at an average even on expressway
Why are you creating this hypothetical situation? Why would they do this its not their road, say this also wha if crowd covers the road lets decrease speed limit to 5
Then, it should be enforced that slower moving vehicles should travel in the left lane.
After, the speed limit increase would show.

Monday I travelled from jaipur to Delhi.Nitin ji saying it is access controlled not a castle on the highway,but I saw few dogs in DME expressway due to low height of barricading.Need to improve it few location

140 is too much for India because there are many small cars which would struggle and those guys will still try to do it like idiots. Speed variation is worse than speeding. If all cars are doing 140, that's fine but if some are doing 140, some 120, some 100 or some even 80, that is very dangerous.
I think a national 120 limit is fine!

Ideally, 160km/h (100mph) is considered a high-speed corridor. That should be the goal.

High speed is one of the main causes of accidents
This Minister doesn't know that there are still many National Highways which are worse than village roads - one fine example is Pondicherry-Bangalore highway.
Our Indian Highways are good for 100 kmph speed and that's more than enough.
Not allowing bikers crossing just like that by destroying dividers and proper lane management for 2 wheeler's and last but not least strict lane discipline for slow moving vehicles.
Bikers and auto rickshaw drivers are the worst drivers on Indian roads.

Please make it 140 Km/hr. Have some sense when you want public to pay such kind of money on vehicle and tax to use a vehicle. Please make other two roads at 100 and 80 for slow drivers.
For better efficiency, you should not drive EVs faster than 60 to 80 Kmph. SO where 140 kmpl sits ?

Speed limit in EXCESS of 120kms on expressways is HIGHLY IRRESPONSIBLE. Let us not be led by the nose by certain elements with money to throw around owning fancy cars which are made for race car enthusiasts with a penchant for speed. There is a definite correlation between excessive speed and accidents. Don't let anybody fool you on that score.

Accident probability does not increase because of speed but because of indisciplined driving. Accident can happen even at 70-80 kmph and can be deadly. It makes no sense to go at 80 kmph or 100 kmph on expressways in modern cars. If you can't drive well, you need not stop others from driving at reasonable speeds on mostly empty roads/expressways.

Nevertheless, even disciplined drivers meet a gory end, bcoz finally it's an engine and it can throw tantrum at the most unexpected time, secondly do you think the corrupt NHAI guys will maintain the roads consistently? Certainly not. Indian roads by far don't meet the International standards to a very large extent, so whether you drive Merc or Tesla there's always this fear of things going wrong.
