    'Superb' THE TIMES
From his remote moorland home, David Hartley assembles a gang of weavers and land-workers to embark upon a criminal enterprise that will capsize the economy and become the biggest fraud in British history. They are the Cragg Vale Coiners and their business is 'clipping' - the forging of coins, a treasonous offence punishable by death. When an excise officer vows to bring them down and with the industrial age set to change the face of England forever, Hartley's empire begins to crumble. Forensically assembled, The Gallows Pole is a true story of resistance and a rarely told alternative history of the North.

Hi Rob, a great vlog about a subject dear to my heart, as King David Hartley is my ancestor. I'm his great, great, great, great, great grandson so I know the history of the coiners in some depth. Bens book, the Gallows Pole, really is a fantastic book and I think accurately portrays the coiners as the rogues they most definitely were. There are elements of fantasy in the book and your vlog that are undoubtedly enhanced, such as the bodgers murder, though the coiners gang did murder a drunk labourer in one of the Heptonstall pubs when he threatened to inform on Deightons murderers.
A fantastic story that deserves to get a wider audience than it currently does, so thank you for helping bring it to peoples attention.

Thanks for the vlog Robert! I finished the Gallows Pole just as we entered lockdown. Found the story fascinating and haunting, and I've been dying to get up there myself ever since. I think I'll make the pilgrimage on foot from Stockport with a bag of coppers. Good job you know your way around up there, I wouldn't fancy running into the ghost of Absalom Butts after dark if I lost my way!

I’ve walked through those woods & over the moors many times & know the story of King David & the Cragg Coiners, but still really enjoyed Robert’s blog.
Just one thing though, Robert mentioned that Sowerby Bridge is 20 mikes away, when it’s only about 6-7 .

Just found the gallows pole on a $.99 shelf at the used bookstore. Only a couple pages in so this really sets the scene, thank you very much. Very excited about this book like it's a lost chapter of the Baroque Cycle.

That was a great watch. Reminds me of walking Haworth old road out of Hebden Bridge. So they were hung on the word of one man? A wonder they didn't just get ten of their own men to sign that nothing was going on.

The book is badly written, edited and story told. Text is very loose with lyrical and pointless passages, repetition of names. It’s a shame that a true story has been ruined by an inept author and subsequent atrocious TV drama. Give both a miss and read the historical records which are more fascinating, insightful and thought provoking than Myers ramblings.
