That isn't canon. The canon explanation given by Ed Boon is that he was injured while escaping the Cyber Lin Kuei but that they left it intentionally mysterious in Mortal Kombat 3 so fans could speculate.

My guess; as to WHY Sub-Zero wore the younger Sub-Zero's outfit in Quan Chi's vision, is because Quan Chi was trying to continue the fued between Scorpion and Sub-Zero by, not only having him eliminate Bigan, but to confuse/trick him into attacking the younger Sub-Zero later. The younger Sub-Zero wears that outfit to honor his older brother; unaware of what the intent is that's driving Scorpion's fuel for vengeance even further. For us fans it was an Easter egg/reference to let us connect the dots and better understand the rivalry of the Lin Kuei and Shiri-Ryu/ Sub-Zero and Scorpion. This is ONLY my theory however
Very nice video. Very fun to watch. However the fact about the scar is not entirely true. Due to Sub-zero obtaining the dragon medallion his appearance changed quite a bit. His skin went pale, his arms were frozen over and his scar has somewhat healed or completely vanished. Check some Deception pics. In some of them you can barely see the scar and it's actually icy blue which should indicate that the medallion changed that as well.
