- www.operaphila.org -- On Saturday, October 30, 2010, the Opera Company of Philadelphia brought together over 650 choristers from 28 participating organizations to perform one of the Knight Foundation's "Random Acts of Culture" at Macy's in Center City Philadelphia. Accompanied by the Wanamaker Organ - the world's largest pipe organ - the OCP Chorus and throngs of singers from the community infiltrated the store as shoppers, and burst into a pop-up rendition of the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's "Messiah" at 12 noon, to the delight of surprised shoppers. This event is one of 1,000 "Random Acts of Culture" to be funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation over the next three years. The initiative transports the classical arts out of the concert halls and opera houses and into our communities to enrich our everyday lives. To learn more about this program and view more events, visit www.randomactso.... The Opera Company thanks Macy's and the Friends of the Wanamaker Organ (www.wanamakeror...) for their partnership, as well as Organ Music Director Peter Conte and Fred Haas, accompanists; OCP Chorus Master Elizabeth Braden, conductor; and Sound Engineer James R. Stemke. For a complete list of participating choirs and more information, visit www.operaphila..... This event was planned to coincide with the first day of National Opera Week.

People…remember when there was joy and happiness at this time. Don’t let the darkness of politicians take away from our humanity and what really matters.
I am one of the singers in this video. It is hard to believe that it is 4 years ago that we did this. I'm saying here and now that this was one of the highlights of my life-long choral singing experience. Amazing!
***** Thanks so much! We had such a wonderful time!
Thank you! It must have been wonderful for you as well as those you were singing to!
Jane Myers Jane , it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The organ, (the largest operational organ in the world) and 600 voices singing this particular piece of music, just Amazing!
Wow- that sounds wonderful
Thank you. I never get tired of listening to this.
I don't care what you believe or don't believe: Seeing that many people smiling and singing together in celebration is pure joy! If something like that were to happen again I would love to participate!
I am in tears. I cant imagine not being a sobbing laughing mess if I had been in attendance
Notice how this masterpiece seems to bring out the best in everyone for a few minutes at least. Praise to God.
Was amazing to be a part of, to be fair though, those of us covering and shooting this were a little more frantic and stressed hahah. Once it all came together though it was a huge sigh of relief and then just joy and excitement with how well it all came out
@@b2284 Why is this not being done again?

Coz covid period..soon they start again
This was a random event, and that is what makes it special. All people of all races and creeds experiencing the joy of praising God. It does not get any more uplifting than that. The world could use a lot more of this.
It's music, not a god. People are moved by non-religious music as well. If it's good, that's what matters. Hardly anyone cares or pays attention to antiquated lyrics which mostly speak to the ideology of its time. Replace the lyrics with latin and people are still moved. Or Swedish. Still moved. Or make it about Brittany Spears, still powerful music.
How thrilling to hear the Lord being praised in a public place such as Macy's in Philadelphia! Someday those that have confessed Jesus as their Lord and Savior will sing it before the throne of God. This was a little taste of heaven! Thank you!!!
four years later and still crying.THIS is the good stuff!
Bah Humbug to those who don't love this. I listen to this frequently as it makes me feel wonderful! The spirit of this recording, besides the song itself, is what's important. Perfection is not a requirement.
God Bless those who spread the joy of Christ and Christmas!
I’m a life long choral singer & this must have been amazing to do… bravo !
I am not religious, but I cannot comprehend how anyone can down-vote this. It is so moving. I challenge anyone to name a piece more worthy of a deity.
+jlee29170 2 percent of people downvoted this. Out of a hundred people, how many do you think would accidentally press the down button? Also, out of a hundred people, it's easy to imagine 1 or 2 people to be miserable little fucks no matter.
I know exactly how you feel
jlee29170 There is one religion in particular that would not only down vote this but would destroy all those that participated. They follow a pedo prophet and scream for the killing of all those who do not.
There are no atheists when listening to the Hallelujah chorus. Afterwards, sure. But during, I just don't think it's possible.
Your opinion is that of a sensitive, cultured person with good taste.
I never ever tire listening to, Handel's Messiah Hallelujah
Hi Joe
Me too
They don't call Philly the city of brotherly love and sisterly affection for nothing. If you don't feel it after this, you're dead! OUTSTANDING!
As a choir, I don't think there is a more awesome song than this one. Random act of worship. The true reason for the season.
Erm, no.
The ‘reason for the season” is to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, which happened in April.
Roman emperor Constantine moved it to December 25, and made a big deal out of it.
My first time singing Halleluia Chorus was in concert choir in High school in the 70's. That Music teacher just passed away on January 1st, 2023, at the age of 93. God Bless you Mr. D. You are the reason I became a Music teacher. May you Rest In Peace.
I first saw this yesterday at church. since then, I have seen it over half a dozen times. What a way to present the gospel!!!
It's great how music ties all people together. No matter the nationality, it's what we all can share :)
I honored the tradition and stood up while watching this video.
Many people do know of- or understand- that tradition. I'm glad you do, just as I do. I am also glad that I am of an age and cultural/regional background (Deep South!) to have been taught that this piece requires and inspires great respect.
All due respect, it’s only a rumor that King George II stood in 1743.
Others supposedly stood because he was the King.
Please can you do it again in 2021.........WE NEED TO HEAR IT.
I will always remove my hat, stand to the playing of this, and sing with all my heart. No matter what.
A much needed reminder of all the good in the world.
What a wonderful experience to have been there when they began singing. It's almost enough to make me want to go out shopping in the malls again instead of just shopping on the internet!
Do not ask me to talk right now, I am too moved.
My eyes, my eyes! They leak.
Thank you!
Me 2
After the last couple years of watching these flashmob songs I really wish I could participate in one. What a thrill that would be
Moved by the intensity of God's glory as was the composer.
Mine too, they are not stopping the leaking.
I watch this year-round. Can’t wait for gathering to sing MESSIAH again one day! Love and peace to all!
I can't even imagine what it would have been like trapped in all that beauty. The experience of a lifetime. One of the most inspriring things I've ever watched on RUclips
The most amazing thing I've heard in my entire life.. King of kings and Lord of lords.. and He shall reign forever and ever!!
The kingdom of the Lord and of His Christ!
I'm a Christian and watch this every day...It gives me strength - no more needs to be said.
I love that the opening piece we hear is The Grand March by Giuseppe Verdi which then key changes into The Hallelujah Chorus of the oratorio Messiah by the musical genius Dr. George Friedrich Handel. Truly a wonderful musical performance.
From the very Throne of God to George Frederick Handel's mind and heart, composed in 1741, and mightily executed here in the magnificent acoustics of Macy's Philadelphia ♥
I have watched and listen over and over again
Thank you all ♥️
I am unable to express in words from heart
Sincerely candice werrbach🗽
And He shall reign for ever and and ever. Praise God. Beautiful music in the city of brotherly love
😭😭😭😭beautiful, ty for warming my heart so much. Again Glory to God in the Highest for King Jesus!!!
Hallelujah!! God be praised! What an absolutely beautiful, God glorifying video! Just praised with tears streaming down my face! I love it!!
Hallelujah To Our King Jesus! Praise Him everywhere. So beautiful to see and hear this. We are indeed blessed in this country because of God and His Son, Our King.
This is one of the most amazing and uplifting things I have EVER experienced. It was part of Greg Holders message on Saturday at the Crossing in Chesterfield. I DIDNT stand and felt so compelled to do that. I went back Sunday and stood and cried to Honor my Living Lord and Risen King and He will be King of Kings Forever and Ever Amen Hallelujah. I serve an amazing yet humble God. Thank you to the people who put this together...Random Act of Culture? For me an Act of expressive Worship!
Hear, hear!!
Dear God! Sometimes I think we might just make it.
God will see that we make it!
Amen!
@@websurfin9575 Yes!
Sometimes you can think of God. sometimes you feel Him. When you sing even a few notes of this, for sure you are breathing God.
* arrives with good tidings *
In this world, we see so much anger, selfishness, and hate. I think it's wonderful that in this day and age there are still those who are willing to come together to share a brief shining moment of beauty with everyone. Well done!
Just when I think Philly doesn't care anymore, I see this. Made me cry like a little girl too.
+Brock Landers Still crying, well into my seventies!
Me too! Love my city and our citizens. Will watch this forever and ever. Love the organ at Wanamaker's (I know it's Macy's now but forever Wanamaker's to me) and love to go at noon to hear it being played! Go Philly!
In Tears of Joy while listening and singing with this group...To God be the Glory
ONLY IN PHILADELPHIA! Good job Philly! Well done and I pray this random act will continue.
For the Lord God Omnipotent God Reigneth! This song, and I do not know of many, that is TRULY dedicated, and orchestrated and done accordingly so TO GOD. To be SHOUTED so that it pierces heaven, and rumbles the ground underneath the angels' feet.
How many songs are for Christ, Mary and so forth compared to how many is for God? Hallelujah! Merry Christmas indeed! Merry Christmas to OUR GOD!
Amen
I love this. People shopping and pursuing the material things they're told they need are being reminded, by this joyous, ethereal singing, what it is they REALLY need. It transcends traditional Christianity to touch the hearts of everybody, Christian or not, atheist or theist. No wonder it brings tears to people's eyes.
Tears to their eyes because of the song itself or tears of pain from the sheer volume of almost 700 people singing in the same room?
DeltaPhi79 Gonna go out on a limb and say the Wanamaker was still loudest... :D
SargNickFury The organ is pretty loud, yeah, but unless you're standing directly next to it, you can still understand people talking to you pretty easily. So the sound of that many people would probably be either on par with or a bit louder than the organ.
Now if it just had one of those 100' pressure pipes that the Boardwalk Hall organ has...
Very nice. It is good to see the City of Brotherly Love acting like it! This is what heaven will be like. People of all races/backgrounds singing and worshiping our Lord. Amen! Amen!
TRULY, ONE OF THE GREATEST SONGS EVER WRITTEN. HALLELUJAH TO THE SAVIOR!
I can't believe that it has been 10 years since I first heard this marvelous performance! I don't think I will ever hear this composition performed as well as this! Bless you all!
I can't believe it's been this long, I feel like I was just running around yesterday stressing out that we were not all in position and ready to go the second the first note was struck... Let alone the editing of all 5 cameras after the fact, but glad it turned out so well and that people still come back to watch it after all these years
@@b2284
Hope they may start doing this soon.
That brought tears to my eyes. I know God was looking down on this and smiled.
I will say it again. THAT IS WHERE I want to do my Christmas shopping! GREAT!
Spectacular!!!
Handel's Messiah, the singular greatest music for Christmas, always puts tears in my eyes. God provided us a gift that has lastest for hundreds of years. Merry Christmas everyone
Yet it is actually an Easter song about the resurrection of Jesus Christ, not his birth.
Outstanding!
Was in that store about a week ago and am still awe struck by the magnificent organ and the space that it occupies. If you ever get to Philadelphia, Macy's (Wanamaker's) at City Hall Square is a must! Get there at noon and hear the organ!
Oh how i wish I could
@@diamondaxe4133 Thanks for your response! Make a plan to see Philadelphia! Such a wonderful place!
The City of Brotherly Love all races, creeds, the young and old alike, praise God
So many youngsters joining the choirs,Amen
Love the look on the shoppers faces, and those final huge chords from the organ!!!
To hear the world's largest organ wit six key-boards, over five-hundred controls, over four-hundred stops and thirty-thousand sixty seven pipes doing "Handel's Massiah is a gift for the world to hear. Plus the Chorus of singers to pull this off. Real music to my ears.
"RED!"
What sorry lives those who downvoted this must lead.
I forwarded this to a choir director with whom I work and it brought her to tears as it does mine.
As a church organist in the ELCA Lutheran church and Catholic churches in which I serve the majesty of the organ is enough to move me but the addition of the choirs bring tears.
Thank you Macy's for providing the venue for these majestic performances and the choirs who participate.
The expressions of the non-participant’s faces are priceless. This is the first performance of this piece that brought tears to my eyes.
The Wanamaker organ, now 110 years in its home in what is now Macy’s on the southeast corner of City Hall Square in Philadelpia is one of the largest organs in the world, and it is currently _the largest operating organ in the world._
Free organ concerts are given by various organists every Saturday at noon that the store is open.
I have a friend who plays the organ; she's put her name on the waiting list for the Wanamaker. I'm told you have to submit an audition tape, and it's something like a year's wait once you get on the list. Even so, it'd still be the highlight of an organist's life to get a chance to play on the king of the King of Instruments.
This always brings tears to my eyes. I wish I could have been there. Dr. Conte deserves more credit than he receives in the description! I have played this on the organ and it is not an easy piece!!!
Peter Richard Conte is a Philadelpia treasure, as is the Wanamaker organ.
I know someone who was there. She was a member of the Philadelphia opera company. She said it was an amazing experience.
I loved seeing the younger people know the words.
I wish I'd been there singing. I wish I could share how thrilling it is to be among many people singing "The Halleluia Chorus".
Flashmobs like this always make me wonder who is originally in the flashmob, and who is just singing along to be a part of it. Love it.
Oh, how I would like this to happen in the midst of the madness of Black Friday. Wouldn't this lighten the mood on that day?
That is the greatest idea in the history of retail
"I did think I did see all of Heaven before me and the Great God Himself."
~Handel to his servant after completing "Hallelujah" from Messiah.
+silverminer021 - And bless his soul G.F.H. has allowed so many following him that same vision! This event at Macy's brings that vision to me!
This piece is evidence of that. Every part of my renewed spirit shakes within me, exploding with joy every time I hear this. This was truly a downloaded work of Heaven delivered to Handel.
I don't understand people who can't take a moment and just enjoy! Even if it's not your favourite kind of music, doesn't it make you smile at least a little!!!???
damn sopranoes back at it again with those high notes
I remember singing this with my entire choir in high school. The Soprano part was a beast, but it was an exhilarating experience to sing such a beautiful song. Hats off to this group.
Did you notice the Descant soprano ending on a High D? See 4:49 you’ll hear it when the black gentleman raises his hand 🤚🏽
My friend Billy, who, as a result of previous injuries was a heroine addict saw & heard this and said in tears, "Just when you're ready to give up on society, they go and do this!" (Billy passed away in July of 2019).
I love listening to this at the beginning of each Christmas season. I just wish I could do a new like each time I listen!
Every year around Christmas time I watch this video again. It moves me every time again...so beautiful!!!

@@thebes50 Merry Christmas Hans I was there on this day as a happen stance and it took me back to my Christmas Junior Choir Concert at the F.H. LaGuardia H.S. of Music and Art now the H.S. of Preforming Arts in NYC. This video is a gift worth keeping and celebrating every year.
I have sung this chorus many times with the APALACHICOLA BAY AREA CHORAL SOCIETY. And it still gives me goose bumbs big time whenever I hear it. You did a beautiful job. Wish I had been there to join in.
This video is such a wonderful blessing! Let all the earth praise Him!
It must've felt like heaven for all of them! WOW!!!
God knows this was wonderful to hear, especially that GREAT PIPE ORGAN rigning out Handel's masterpiece. Let's do it again folks
I am not a Christian and I am not a God-believer as well. So, why does it resonate in my heart so powerfully to flood me in tears? I have no idea.
+Amitava Manna The answer to that is that beauty transcends belief or faith and this song is pure beauty.
Jesus is knocking, my beloved.
It was brilliantly written and with so many singing it along with that organ accompanying, the Spirit/Creator/G-d moves/touches Everyone...You are not the only non-believer to be affected this way. I have seen many other comments similar to yours...
I thought hard about your comment. I come to understand no one is born with God-knowledge; that God-knowledge has to be acquired with inner quest. Your comment hides a beautiful truth-we are like a BUD (non-believer), waiting to be bloomed as FLOWER (believer)! It stuns me! Thank you friend.
Have you considered the possibility that you were created that way? I too was once an atheist Thankfully, God still believed in me! He a;;owed me to question everything until I understood I did not have the answers. keep searching my friend.
I watch this each year. And each year I am grateful for all involved in this holiday magic. Many thanks. 💗💗
Sopranos with some serious pipes!
The beautiful SOUND of this does not compare to the countless happy faces in this video. Every time I watch it, I am in tears of joy. This was a moment of utter beauty that all of these people shared.
Never truer words.
For some reason, I rec'd an email to access this; I jumped right in on the alto. Wonderful. I hope next year it happens, and I can be there!
This is masterpiece.
If Christians have an international anthem, this certainly is it. Everybody knows this one, and it is such great fun to sing it!
I think the Christian international anthem should be "All hail the power of Jesus' name". This is another one.

Goosebumps. Every single year.
The Heaven's Proclaim God's Glory...the seven choirs of angels, each having a part with the clear result that His children, stopped to acknowledge He is King of Kings, and Lord o'er Lords. What a touching moment; indeed, Handel has a special place in Paradise for this song. It touches the heart and soul; the human and the devine forever more.
Thank you for sharing this experience.
The genuineness of it all. You see it on all their faces. Politics and racism vanished in the face of love for a few minutes. This was America before American went woke.

Darn it, I always say I won't cry whenever I hear this, but I do. I always do.
What a pleasure to hear such lovely music.
the screen is a little blurry now from tears, so sorry for any mistakes. I have many renditions and heard many (and sung in choirs) of this. This is hands down my favorite. Just stunning and moving at the same time. And what a setting - one of the largest organs, great voices, super acoustics all rolled in together. Wish I was there to hear it in person!
I watch this over and over. Absolutely wonderful!!
I can not help but become all teary-eyed and emotional.....this is without a doubt, a moving piece of art.
thank you so much!

Upon hearing the opening to this I stood and sang- in my own kitchen! I'd LOVE to be in a place where this would happen. I'd sing my ass off!!
I bet everyone had that feel good feeling all day after being there to hear it live!
Even better than the mall flash mob! Especially since there are more singers and the world's second largest pipe organ with multiple voices accompanying them! This the best Hallelujah flash mob on RUclips!
Awesome show of unity in mankind regardless of faith! Thank you!. Absolutely amazing! More. More. More!
I've listened to this numerous times and it' makes me tear up with Joy every time. Whoever was involved with this last year either in singing, or just being inside the store when the choristers broke out in song are VERY luck people. I really really hope they make this an annual event! Thank you.
I think it's just AMAZING to get this many people to sing ANYTHING in unison... outside a church...
BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVO!
Late but no less lovingly sincere.
For one who has enjoyed singing and this wonderful work...God Bless You All.
This uplifting piece deserves to be top of the playlist not only at this time of year but all year round when we all need a lift out of the doom and gloom surrounding us all. A magnificent setting, a magnificent yet virtually unknown (outside of the USA but I am in UK and love this work) instrument and a magnificent choir making the most the building and instrument can offer their talented voices. No apologies for the number of 'magnificents' but how else would you describe the whole experience we can watch over and over when we need a little pick me up!
Makes me cry every time I see this video. Just think... the choruses of Angels in Heaven that will sing when we are called to assembly as the scripture describes.
I cry EVERY time...
