  • In Model AV8R episode 81, we feature E-Flite's new Twin Timber 1.6! From out of nowhere, E-Flite made the most unique Timber ever! It is rugged, stable, and very capable! In this review we'll cover all the features and options. We'll fly it on 3s and 4s and show you what its capable of...aerobatics, bush flying, 3D, and some wild maneuvers thanks to the differential thrust AND rudder. We tortured the gear, which is the strongest ever installed on a Timber. This will make a great first twin, and it could be Adam's favorite Timber ever...tune in and see!

    Hands down the BEST videos for RC aircraft on RUclips!!! Professional quality, but more importantly, passes on lots of great information about how to improve things. Refreshing to see videos that actually help the RC air community, instead of just "showing off" what airplanes they have acquired. Especially like the way Adam allows you to HEAR the aircraft fly, versus constantly talking over the video!!! I recommend this channel to all our customers, especially the newer flyers. Keep up the great work! 👍

      @@ModelAV8RChannel I may have mentioned this to you but many years ago there was a twin made by Kyosho called the Duet. The single Timber looks very much like its suster tge Etude. There is very much an element of nostalgia with the twin as I owned the Duet way back when. This was of course back when we still used 6 and 7 cell nicads with sub c cells and 8.4 volts was a big deal! Regardless for its time the Duet was a wonderful flier and I cant help but see the similarities between the two. Obviously MUCH, has changed since then. Watching you put the twin through all its paces and seeing how much fun it is earned you a link click. Now if I could just figure out how to put tricycle gear on it lol

      That is so cool David, I looked that plane up on line...I see what you're saying! Thank you brother for using our link, we very much appreciate that! With your modeling skill...you'll figure it out I'm sure. I run the packs as far back as I can get them, so there is room for a nose wheel set up right at the front, and maybe a separate 9g servo. The gear leg would have to be pretty long though, kind of like an Airacobra. Dang man, now I'm thinking about it! Lol

    I have a Bush Mule and a Grand Tundra so won't be getting one of these. BUT this looks like it has the Bush Mule licked! Much better gear and wiring made so easy (I had to spend some time on mine converting to a single plug), non-exploding props and decent wheels are just 3 examples I noted. The Grand Tundra is very nice, though, and hard to pick any fault with it. The Twimber looked the best balance on 4S with slats to me (but I bow to your opinion as I'm only watching video). Love the moon shot (thought it said 'money shot' for a second, lol) and the wrong switch quick recovery.

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel  Год назад +1

      I will say the GT is a great airplane. That said I'd chose the Twimber just because its different and a bit more capable. You're on to something with the slats. I'm leaving them on for what I like to do best with it, and its still very capable when you push it even with them on. Guys that key on aerobatics most will want them off. Yeah man I saw that moon and got right behind Heidi so I could line it up with her line of sight. Dude...that switch snafu was close!! LOL

      @@ModelAV8RChannel - Some way to install and remove slats would be great. Maybe if they made the slat with a plastic strip that slid into a thin slot on the leading edge. Then a couple screws to lock it in.

    Great video as ever Adam. Like you I love practising low and slow bush plane stuff, in particular tight circuits and sideslipped approaches. In this Twin Timber review, I didn't see you testing the plane in sideslips, or knife edge flying it. Do you have any comment on how well it flies those manoeuvres? Also, I have a DX9 transmitter - can the plane be set up out of the box (1) with reverse thrust and (2) ailerons drooping 50% with flaps (ideally with differential being applied when drooped). I can see this plane being a candidate for my next purchase when it becomes available in UK, provided it can be sideslipped well. And if anyone is talking with E-Flite R&D, ask them to think about a model where slats deploy only when flaps are lowered. They could then extend even more into the airflow to maintain unstalled airflow instead of fixed slats that have to use a (poor) compromise position. And if they want to get REALLY whacky, a way to duct propwash into a hollow core in the wing to then blow it out over the ailerons would be really interesting. The leading edge duct opening would only open when flaps were lowered. Oh and make those flaps Fowler flaps. With all that we could have real fun in the STOL envelope.; Keep the great videos coming 👍

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel  Год назад

      Thanks Mike! Yeah we slipped it a bunch (strange I didn't use any of that footage). But yes, anything with a rudder will slip. Knife edge is another story, it won't with the differential thrust working, but you can turn that off through forward programming with the TX. Then it will, but you need a bit of speed. It won't do a slow, high beta KE. With a properly updated DX9, yes, forward programming for AS3X, SAFE, and the ESC works...so yep you can program reverse. You could do the aileron drop mix if you keep then flaps on a Y harness and give the ailerons each a channel. If you want flaps and ailerons all on separate channels you'll need more channels.

      @@ModelAV8RChannel Fantastic and thanks for the quick reply. Knife edging isnt a big deal for me and I have the Extra for that anyway, but STOL Sideslipping is so thats great to know. Glad you found us! Welcome. Yes you can, but if you bind it with SAFE you wouldn't be able to mix in full span ailerons or use thrust reverse. If you bind it with AS3X only you could do one of the other two but not both.

    I'm flying the Turbo Timber Evolution at this time and would like to get a second airplane. I would like your opinion if you compare the Twin Timber to the Cessna 150T. I know they are in a different size category but advantages for the bigger Cessna that appeal to me are better visibility and i am wondering if it would also be a big difference in stability when flying in the wind ? Also would like your opinion on the power difference between the Twin Timber and the Cessna ?

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel  11 месяцев назад +1

      Hey Patrick. I've owned both and have a lot of time on the 150. The 150 is a good bit bigger, and it is a great example of "bigger flies better". It is smoother, less affected by the wind, and as you say much easier to see with a more substantial presence in the air. The downside is it takes up more room in the hangar, and is harder to transport. That said, it is the easiest to assemble (Field assembly) giant scale plane I've ever owned. Only takes about a minute. Power wise it has plenty, but not as much as the Twimber.
      They are both fun airplanes and worthy additions to a hangar, but hands down I'd say if you have never had the pleasure of owning a giant scale plane before, you should. You already have a Timber, so I'd advise going for the 150. It will fly fine on a lot of batteries as well, but I think the sweet spot is 6s 5000's or 6000's. You'll get about 8 to 10 minutes of flight time. When they get that big it is just a different experience, and a great one at that.

    I couldn't stop smiling during the flights. I just found out about this plane and it looks like a perfect fit for my flying. Frankly I was surprised it's as aerobatic as it is being a high wing, but it looks like inverted flying and even knife edge are no problem. Speaking of knife edge, what is your preferred battery? (considering weight and balance)

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel  Год назад +1

      Wayne we put every pack we used as far back as we could get it. The sweet spot for us was the 3200 and 3300 4s packs. Best combination of performance and flight time. Very aerobatic, but you have to be hauling to sustain a knife edge because of the differential thrust. It will do it, but not a high beta KE.

    I've been out the rc world for 8 years, I just got back in last month, bought a carbon cub s2 bnf and picked up a used dxs transmitter. Love the plane but obviously I want to step up already, you think I could get by with a nx8 or do I need the nx10? I'll mostly stick with stol planes like the timbers and cubs bc I fly off grass and occasionally water. My next plane i was considering the timber evolution but now since this released this twin looks awesome and might get this instead.

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel  Год назад

      The NX8 is a great transmitter. That said you can never have "too much transmitter". I use the NX8 for most things, but I have an older DX18 for when I need more channels. It's nice to have options, and with all the features the newest stuff is coming with, you may eventually have a need for more than 8 channels. When it comes to transmitters and chargers I recommend getting as much as you can...you'll always be glad you did. NX10 for the win...

      DX9 is a good TX. I have a DX9 Black as well (I have too many transmitters...lol). It does have forward programming, but the NX series has more capability going forward. If it is possible, it is worth spending the money to get more than you need right now, and know it will be useful to you later. It will be. I see it all the time, and I did this. You get "enough", and a year or so later you're spending the money anyway. Same with chargers.

    Hey Adam how does this guy compare to the bison ?

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel  Год назад +1

      I like them both for different reasons. The Twimber is easy to fly well and the look is different enough to be very interesting. The differential thrust and reverse thrust give it capabilities the Bison can't match.
      The Bison is more of a challenge to fly well ...especially slow, and very good rudder skills are a must to get the most out of it. I like that. The challenge will make a better pilot out of anyone who has the patience to stick with it.
      Basically, the Twimber is easier to fly, and is a more laid back experience. It has some features that require a bit more skill to master, but you don't have to use those to fly it well. The Bison is more demanding, and for a less skilled pilot probably a bit nerve racking. When flown well by a higher skill pilot, it is a capable, fun plane. Both are worth owning honestly, but for different reasons. Hope that helps!
