When I was fighting ALL in 03, the Hawks ran a family training event with Camp Quality and Fox Footy where we got to meet Mitch (and the young guns) when he was just made the Rising Star. Then came the premiership dynasty from 08-15 and wherever I was, always made it a habit to stake my argument that Mitch and Hodgey were 2 of the greatest footy minds of our era. Even at 2018 GF party, I was cheering West Coast because I knew Mitch's fingerprints were all over how they were coached (Schofield has even said that Mitch was the missing link to their success). And now as a coach, Mitch is staking his name as the architect of our next success. We have a great culture at the club, the players are exciting and playing with ferocity and passion. Calling it now, when Sam Mitchell retires, he will be held in the same starry eyed regard as Lethal, Chief, Dipper and Kennedy
I was critical of Sam at the beginning of the year. I just couldnt see where the improvement was going to come from. Super defensive tactics being used far too early in games. Shut down roles being played by atracking players....it just drove me insane. Then Daysy cane back in. Now we had a legitimate in and out mid who used the ball superbly all over the field and could run as well as a wingman. Daysy isnt the only reason we changed..Sam began to trust the structures to overcome initial pressures and left players in their positions instead of moving them. The Port Adelaide loss proved to me that coaching had more to do with our success and failures than at any other time in the last three years. We went defensive woth 3.30 to go in the third qtr and played no one in a shut down role on Butters in the final qtr where he amassed 17 disposals. We lost. We all felt that. So, we swap the gameplan and go for all out attack and won many games. Mitch Lewis comes back in against the Cats down at thie tiny 'slim fast' ground.(How they get away with having a ground so narrow in a national comp is crazy. We need standardised field sizes.) Lewis was our key target and played injured....and got more injured. So..we go back to the standard group who had been winning us games: Chol, Dear, Breust, Gunston, Dildo, Ginny and Watson with help from CMac, Weds and Mass and occasionally Dimma. Right, so our midfield is sorted, our forward line is sort and our defense: Sicily, Frosty, Scrimma, Dimma, Weddle, Impey and Amon are doing a grand job restricting offenses. We lose another game from a good lead by switching to the 'guarding grass' tactic and the writing is on the wall. Play that crap again and we lose. I haven't seen it since...there have been good defensive zoning patches but not that 'full field' zone which good teams who use the ball well, like GWS, can just walk through as if not bothered. We must play the 'Hawthorn Brand'. The 'Hawthorn Brand' wins flags. This team will win flags. Maybe this year...a bit early like 2008 but there's no reason we shouldn't if we play with enthusiasm and the energy of todays game. Everyone has learned something this season Especially me. Sam Mitchell knows more about coaching than I believed at first. I have seen where the improvement has come from and I like the gameplan. CARN THE MIGHTY HAWKS!!!
