- The Western genre is one of the most recognisable genres out there, with many classics such as 'Once Upon a Time in the West' and 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.' When people think of classic films, no doubt Westerns spring to mind. But why are they so memorable? And why have they had such a lasting impact on popular culture and cinema as a whole? This video aims to answer this question by examining what makes them so cool, by focussing on Sergio Leone's western filmography.

I think Outlaw Josey Wales is Chief Dan George's film. Eastwood is more on the supporting side in it.....plus that film lacks the Leone tension is many scenes. Leone would have elevated that film immensely....it had the epicness but lacked the leone finesse. I prefer High Plains Drifter for its explosiveness

I feel like A Fistful of Dollars and A Few Dollars perfected the genre, showing a stranger become one of the coolest mfs in fiction, plus Mortimer is prob my fav Leone character, he has such tragic depth, while also being a badass bounty hunter is truly awe-inspiring 💖
Thank you. I grew up surrounded by this culture with a Western movie fan for a Dad, but I for the life of me. Just could not see the appeal. I try to keep an open mind but my adhd would always get the best of me.

Using The Searchers as the example of John Wayne's heroic and morally good characters is maybe not the clearest choice :/
Leone didn't start the spaghetti western genre, his friend Sergio Corbucci directed two Italian westerns Massacre at Grand Canyon (1963) and Minnesota Clay (1964-but earlier in the year than Fistful of Dollars) and Corbucci had a bigger impact on the style of the spaghetti western than Leone (who Imo only is the greatest filmmaker of all time)
I would argue that Leone started it because when you watch django which came out after a fist full of dollars you can see a clear influence from Leone. Both men contributed greatly to the genre.
This is really well written and thought out, but a lot of the time you sound like you're being forced to read it for a school presentation.

Not as cool maybe, but Clint made them as good or better. However, that may just be a continuation of Leone's legacy given his influence on Eastwood.

I love this movie and there is some truth in what Tarantino once said, that great directors only steal from other movies and bring them to the screen differently - the good, the bad and the ugly, for example, follows the same principle of It's a mad, mad world by Stanley Kramer - in the beginning a man dies and he has a lot of money hidden and wants to give it away, but of course Sergio Leone's interpretation is different and yet I think he came up with the idea after watching this movie - what I would like to mention at the end is the fact that creative filmmakers literally split up several movies like a puzzle and then create their own work.

I think your summation pretty much nails it. Leone took some parts that at the time were considered average to good and assembled his films in a way that elevated all the parts into something more. Other directors could have made decent film with the inputs Leone had, but nobody could have made the films he did. In my home, Leone is a legend and my children all hold Leone, and Morricone, in high regards.

Stop. You have made a large error regarding the Fistful of Dollars (FFD). . .and your reliance on FFD as the template for subsequent westerns.
You over looked the fundamental fact that Sergio Leone borrowed far more from Kurasawa than merely the plot, etc.
The entire concept of the anti hero (Man with No Name/Blondie then Harmonica) was a juxtaposition of Kurasawa's anti hero in Yojimbo and its subsequent Kurasawa films.
FFD is practically a shot for shot remake of Yojimbo ... and many of those concepts were carried over into his subsequent films, including the camera closeups of the characters for dramatic effect.
Leone did take it further and advanced it from what Kurasawa did ... but what really set Leone films apart are below.
What truly and uniquely sets the Leone westerns apart from all others is Ennio Morricone and his soundtracks. The innovative use of the harmonica or the sounds of the compositions for Leone films, differs from all others such as the Symphonic sound of The Magnificent Seven, etc. or Dimitri Tiomkin's score for High Noon.
Imagine the scene that you have put out there ... the last gun fight/standoff of Tuco, Blondie, and the Colonel, in Good, Bad, & Ugly with any other soundtrack than Morricone's.
Regardless, I do generally agree with your conclusions about Leone, but think greater emphasis should be placed on the points that I've enumerated.
