It has a number of advantages. The biggest being your pupils absorbing light, red doesn’t dilate your pupils as much as white light. Therefore making it easier to adjust to the darkness after turning it off. And trust me, it’s a huge difference.

If you dont have a lantern but have a jug of water, you can attach the headlamp to the jug, be sure its filled with water and the led light is facing inwards so its shining into the water jug. When filled with water, the water jug basically turns into a lamp, and is extremely bright (well... brightness is depedent on your headlamps strength!), but typically its incredibly uniform, and also "soft". You can also do this with the red light option.

All due respect to you sir, I still have my Moon beem, I don't use it. But that is irrelevant, and it does have red light capability as long as you don't lose the lens. Needless to say mine has been set on red light since had it issued in boot camp. Streamlight is the way to go brother

Red lights are used to minimize the disruption of Rhodopsin production, which stop being produced, and will "desolve" when exposed to basically any light. They're the reason you can see better after staying in the dark for a while.

The sure fires i was issued in the army were badass. The only problem is they ate trough batteries and supply didn’t have them a lot of times.

I was always told it was because red light doesn’t make your pupils go small so it didn’t affect you from seeing in the dark when you turned it off

Wonder when they'll just create contacts for yall to see night as almost day. But it has to give that spooky reflection like animals eyes.
