#MilitaryFlashlight
I’m a gun guy. I collect and buy firearms, sometimes buying two or three a week. That’s always been my only hobby. But for whatever reason, I want to get into flashlights lol. Guess it’s always a good time to start a new hobby.
flashlights are awesome :D
If you buy a fleshlight you actually can get into it
@WilliamTheGunNut lol "today were doing an led conversion on this here fleshlight"
Those bend headed military flashlights were nearly indestructible. When I was in Basic (20+ years ago) people would throw them away when the bulb stopped working, which was the weakest part of the light. I would gather them up and use the spare bulb in the tail cap. Still have about five floating around in my boxes, and they still work. At the time, they were about $5, now I think the PX sells them for about $12 and that is still a good price. Drop any LED bulb in them and they shine for days. No offence, don't think I could do your conversion. Still amazing work you did.
Dude those were beautiful! Nice builds and really satisfying beam shots, that 3K color temp is fantastic.
Remember what the camera does with color correction, in person 3k will look way different from this, i have one with 4500k and in person looks pretty similar to the video
uni-t means unity tamks
Sweet mod, I love the old angle light.
What an extremely pleasant video. Great builds.
I guess I have to call you the Flashlight Guru. You come up with some pretty good fun ideas. Yeah flashlight reports are fun and imaginative I love watching your show. Keep up with your good work. And as always it fun to watch your episodes on flashlights and idea!
Beautiful military flashlight (angle-head) refit! I'm going to dig mine out from my deployment and show 'em some respect with an LED upgrade. Cool retro factor and sentimental! You should do some production drop-ins with, say, 200 lumens for the angle-head lights and sell them to us vets! If you could get the cost down to $50 apiece, you'd probably sell a ton! Cheers!
I would buy one in a heartbeat!
At $50 a piece, hell, my friend can get one too!
Yes, I would've asked how much the mods cost, so thank you for answering that. Expensive, but must've been fun to make! Nice work!
Another great video, hope you hit 10k subs soon!
dude i love watchin ur videos rather ur building a light modding a light or Reviewing a light keep the videos comein great work bro
Used to be able to find those at army surplus stores all the time back in the day
Omg, that 3k looks retro bulb on steroids 😝. Always loved that vintage army angle head light.
Dude thats really cool
the machining you make only is already expensive plus the customers request. you deserve it
Came out great!
I have one of these angle head lights! Using it to complete a military reenactment uniform from the 80s.
If I have the option I always go for a warmer light color. It is just better when you are confronted with a lot of vegetation, mist or even underwater. I like my Armytek Dobermann in warm white. For that I sacrifice some output if I have to. Anyways, great conversion, great channel!
Yeah, don't apologize for giving the client what he asked for...your engineering and labor have value. I wouldn't ask for such a thing bit apparently someone did, so good job..
I just got mine yesterday and modded with glow tape in filter housing as well as diffuser and better halogen bulb. Imagine my joy when I saw you holding one Soo I had to comment. Although.....I must say I am coming around full circle after going through the whole flashlight rollercoaster of: Old I can halogens growing up, then xenon, then buying weak LED flashlights as they got affordable, then brightness hunting the next best LEDs, moving up to baby mods and expensive enthusiast lights, then hunting non PWM moonlight LED lights, then a taste of HCRI, leading next to ONLY using HCRI lights, and finally..... now I'm looking for supercharged xenon and incandescents?? The light is just fantastic and our batteries are much better. Anyway, thanks for the vid!
Ooo, what do you have cooking up?
Regarding that Military flashlight. I wonder if high CRI makes it easier to spot camouflaged enemies? Perhaps the customer is a Veteran that wanted it to be as close to original bulb as possible and was happy to fork out the extra for High CRI and Warmer Colour Temperature.
Warm white is always the way forwards for me, pretty much every single bulb in the house is now warm white (I went on an led purge when I moved in in 2013)
Warm White LED? Because LED drivers in light bulbs tend to be pretty shit though I installed a few newer ones 3 years ago so we'll see how these fair. LED Flashlights on the other hand are probably bulletproof.
@@stoopidhaters leds are rated for colour temperature, so 2700k is pretty common and warm white, 4000k is neutral white and anything above 5000k is cool white and has a slightly blue tint to it.
The next thing to look at is the CRI or colour rendering index, incandescent light bulbs had a CRI of 100 - identical to sunlight. Cool white tend to have a CRI of around 70 this means colours look washed out and pale, definitely not good if you're trying to cook the perfect steak. Warm white tends to get much closer to 100CRI, generally between 96CRI and 98CRI. It's close enough that you don't end up with a well done steak instead of medium rare.
Yes, the early led drivers were shit, but now, even the cheapest led bulbs seem pretty reliable, my favourites are the led filament bulbs, they look much like a traditional incandescent bulb, but have the power efficiency of led. They also look much nicer in fittings where the bulb is visible.
And yes, led torches are pretty bullet proof, I used to build them over a decade ago, most still work fine, even the every day carry work lights.
@@grahamentwistle2104 Yes, I already know about Colour Temperature and CRI but great explanation anyway. Yeah I'm sure newer LED bulbs are more reliable. My only issue is flicker, it's not hugely noticeable but it is there. Apparently those Filament LEDs also have flicker and those things are more expensive. So I swapped back to my 72W (1000lumens) Halogen because I'm a Lightphile.
Dude so cool I use to look at old Vitnam war photos in grade school library ....45 in one hand and cheep surplus flashlight in the other .....oh how I wish I had a time machine and a bunch of CREE@S
Sounds like those flashlights may be made for a movie prop.
That's what I was thinking. Wonder what movie it's for.
That's a pretty expensive prop, but hey, I'm all for High CRI and Colour Temperature accuracy when it comes to this sort of thing because lighting plays a role when it comes to movies.

The authenticity pays for itself.
I never laughed about 450 dollars so much before, immediate thumbs up for the little editing fun. Just got on CPF finally, but just saw BLF and it looks a little more fun over there. Lots of group buys, just what my wallet needs.
great vid. i also own the same flashlight that i acquired while in the army, got it in 2001, and have been wanting to change it to an LED flashlight. is it possible to just change the original glass bulb to an LED light, without replacing the housing like you did?
ruclips.net/video/KEyAbAewibA/видео.html
I got my angle light in 1993 when I joined the Army. It survived basic training, AIT (medic school), 5 years as a Paratrooper/medic for infantry at Ft. Bragg, jumping from planes and helos, a deployment to the middle east, numerous training/field problem ops in country and so on. I still have it. I'm missing the threaded part that holds the color lenses and the lenses themselves but it still works.
I work at Fulton Industries who is the manufacturer of this right angle light. We love hearing stories of history of actual users! Thanks for sharing.
Fulton sells genuine replacement parts.
Is being able to have it standing up on it's own the only reason to make an angled flashlight, or does that unusual form factor bring other benefits?
Thanks, Matt.
both the GI angle head and the rayovac sportsman are iconic classics.
Even if they're not very powerful they're worth owning.
The eveready Captain isn't bad either, but they cheapened out much sooner than the rayovac did.
My brother plans to gift me these from the base. Im just seeing this video to see how durable it is. Nice!
Cards? You near StL? This video makes me want to get a couple vintage lights converted.
Awesome, found it!
So, which movie do we get to see these as props in? 😉👍️
I did this with a sleeve to fit two 18650 batteries and an LED bulb rated for 6V to 40V. Needless to say it's pretty bright. Only thing I had to toss was the spare bulb holder.
If you thought the Fulton version of the US MX-991/U flashlight you modified was good quality, then check out the version made by G.T. Price based in Los Angeles USA that was also a military contractor for the same MX-991/U flashlight for a limited time but the build quality was much better and are preferred by most people that have tried both versions (including me) over the inferior version made by Fulton.
The G.T. Price versions are harder to find as less were manufactured but worth the extra searching for about the same price.
G.T.Price went out of business a long time ago and Fulton industries bought all the machinery and moulds for the MX-991/U.
Those sorts of flashlight weren't only used by the military back in the late 80s I was issued one when I worked for the royal mail the difference was theirs was red and had no coloured filter set like the military version
I want the military light conversion. I’ll send the lights I have. I had for a very long time
I remember those flashlights, while you walked the light flickered on and off, built by the lowest bidder.
Did they want these for a movie or tv production? Make it bright but keep the authenticity?
HOME RUN!!!!!
@Matt Smith I just found one of the MX-991/U Flashlights passed down from family. Do you have a "simple" Led upgrade and or battery upgrade you could recommend? I was thinkin the 325 LUMEN FIREFLY 2-6 CELL & a single 26650 KEEPPOWER with sleeve would work. Your thoughts? Any concerns for overheating? I have no clue what brightness or runtime would be but anything >80 lumens and 30 min would be awesome! 1 hr would be great! Your input would be greatly appreciated. I just discovered your channel and products and will prob be upgrading my incandescent Mag lights from scouts about 2 decades ago.
Thank s for the tutorial 😎🇺🇸👍
You can lay it down on its side and angle it up on the switch to.
Brother in Flashlights.
Hey so how terrible are those PR2 drop in replacement bulbs with an LED in them?
i like your shirt.
Is the angle still used in the army
Are there led bulb upgrades available for lights like that? If so, which one would you suggest?
www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/flashlight-bulbs/3-watt-flashlight-bulb-pr2-3whp-x/638/
Okay all's I did. Was put in a LED bulb in mine it's like 20 times brighter and I can switch back and forth to the cadesent if I want no conversion kit or nothing like that??
You'd Nuts For Charging A Price Like That.
where can you buy that spare part for the fulton?
So you mod flashlights for customers?
Did you use the 3000k 95cri SST-20 in it?
It's XML2
@@Lumencraft- Those are nice builds. Barbolight sells a reproduction of the FA-5 used by NASA. Uses an XP-L HI 3K High CRI. That's a nice one too. I had to spring for one of them.
I got this mini fulton torchlight which the batteries leaked within. Before this, i think i replace it with a different batteries (already used batteries) to test like whether the batteries are ok. Then i saw the lights dim. So i open the cap and find the batteries leaked (just at the moment) and immediately get a tissue to clean the inner parts. However, recently, when i bought a set of new batteries, i tested it again to see if the torchlight is in good condition (to see if can lit again cause previously i try another battery that still works but the torch does not light up), however, the torch didnt lit. Any suggestions how to repair cause the fulton torch is bought not long (months before)
Yes! Issue solved! Thank you:)
How much would it cost for Fulton conversion? Please
Its a pity then you didnt put that 3000k led into the first flashlight. Try to make some more vintage lights!!!
Sure, just pay up 500 bucks.
Also would you be willing to sell that double barrel lantern mod you made?
I think that one will stay with me for now. Thanks for the support though :)
some items where buy
My DI chucked moon beams at us like they were bricks

AdventureSportFlashlights good day sir
I definitely wanted to convert my moonbeam to LED but at $450, it's cheaper to buy a SureFire.
Russian, пожалуйста напиши мне где ты покупал led lamp и как это найти, заранее благодарю за ответ и помощь
does anyone the size of the socket ? is it P13,5 ?
Can't you just insert battery other way?
Matt Smith, the Top G of Flashaholics.
What can you do to a thrunite tn31?
Hi Bob, I don't do a lot of mod work these days. You might check with Vinh from skylumen.com he is really good with modding and I know for sure he works on Thrunite brand.
Thats a pretty fair price for custom retrofitting something like that. Dont apologize.
Don't sell yourself short bud. Nice work.
i wished to have my German Bundeswehr Taschenlampe converted to LED
Flishlisht led army good,
400! LMAO I'll take 50
No way I would pay that much for any flashlight.
as a retired military vet, those were the worst flashlights ever invented. they weren't even worth stealing.
Is there an LED that would drop-in into this light? I have the exact same plastic green light, I clicked on this video hoping to find an led i can just buy and place in
The Fulton angle head shown in the video is a real military issued flashlight. Military learned why they were great and extremely reliable and over built. Plus you can store the colored filters, fire starter, extra bulb/ led behind the head and tail. It can light a fire easy with steel wool with those large copper contacts in the head, hold and use in the cold with gloves easier with the body/stick out switch design. Fulton sells an LED bulb specifically for the angle head for $17.98 which is optimized for that reflector they say. But the maglite drop in for 2D should at least be more light. The Streamlight polytac angle uses uncommon batteries and has worse battery life and electronic modes using a circuit board and that's something that will cause reliability problems down the road. As long as you know the differences you can buy what ever one is best suited.

good for tunnel rats ,or cave searches.
Just spend $60 and get a Thrunite TC20 V2 and be done with it.
Thats looks like tunnel rats light watch the video on RUclips its ww2 things
Sami YES!! I had never seen that video, but that is the same light for sure! If anyone else wants to see that video its "Tunnel Rats (The Vietnam war)"
Sami Vainonpää it’s an angle head flashlight, it was issued to all personal and still is, it was made so that a soldier could have it on his harness or shirt and firefighters use them too because of that reason!
I am really dumb. I'm sure you went over this already. Send me a link for a drop-in conversion for a 90 degree old school military flashlight. Please and thank you.
Before I'd Pay Anyone $450.00

Yes, this project is very expensive, but Matt is a busy man and this took a big chunk of time off his regular schedule. As long as there's demand for such niche things, people are willing to fork out the money.
