Dealing With Perfectionism In Songwriting

- This is just some advice from an "old guy" who has been around the block.
It's something a lot of struggle with, but if you can get over it, it will allow you to finally start writing again!
I concur... :-)
Perfectionism is why I never took off musically. It's been the cancer of anything I've done as far as music production is concerned. I've released so little music yet I've got so much of it withheld in the 4 walls of my home studio.
It’s never too late to start! You might be entertained by the video called “why the hell do you have a recording studio?”
Mate, that video has really struck a chord with me.
I’m a “home only” and very part-time musician, and what you say is right on the money.
Sometimes that first take is the one with all the passion and energy in it (whatever the instrument, and yep, even vocals!)
You just can’t ever recapture it with consequent takes, and a flinch factor sets in while recording that just doesn’t happen live. Sometimes I really tighten up as soon as that red button is glowing, and it’s so very frustrating.
Thank you for imparting your words into this, and freeing the creative juices.
Sage advice. A++
Listen to In Utero by Nirvana. There is 'crap' everywhere. If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me.
Well said Lewin, we can all get over critical of ourselfs and be far to picky, relax, have fun and let the music flow !
Exactly what I needed to hear Lewin! I've went from my brain exploding with creativity and wonderful songs pouring out to back peddling and snuffing out my fire spending too much time making everything perfect . When the reality is You're exactly right everything is so much more real , so much more raw when you just let go of the mistakes and get back to spending more time doing what you love in the first place . Making music!
how much time takes you to write, recording and mixing a song of MusicMonday?
Anywhere between 7-10 hours. Depends on a lot.
@@GaragebandandBeyond well, it's a reasonable time. Thank you. I suppose you spend the most of the time for writing and recording, right?
@@DanieleNasutiComposer I start writing and recording at the same time.
I come up with some music I like, record it. Then work on melody and lyrics, recording them.
When/if I think it's time for a chorus, I write it, record it, give it lyrics and a melody. Same with a bridge.
Then I add all the little stuff and mix and master it.
Then I shoot the video and edit it, which is usually about 2-3 hours.
@@GaragebandandBeyond aah ok, I thought you wrote all before and then only recording etc. 👍
Great advice. Thanks for all you do. I’ve learned more from you than any other RUclips source.
ahah right, this is one of my favourites channels!! 🙂
Huge issue for me... thanks for the advice
You don't look old enough to be in your 40's! Anyway! Thanks for this! The raw emotion is what is so appealing about garage rock and some punk rock bands - not the perfection. An interesting documentary to see, about this, is called "The New Garage Explosion. In Love With These Times." I tend to lean towards being perfect but go back to this documentary when I need to fall back a little. I also want to add that your videos have helped me with garageband more than anything else! Thanks a million!
This really helps me a lot, I am also struggling with perfectionism when making song covers, now i realize because of you, thank you!
You speak volumes, this video really hit me where it counts, musically.
Great topic and truly a struggle for me and many others. Thanks
Thanks for posting that I needed to hear it today
Thanks for the inspirational lift .Although playing and writing music for over 50 years taught me much of what you describe, being new to digital recording and its extreme capabilities allowed me to fall back into that trap. Fix that note, edit that take, re-mix that song ad infinitum!
good advise-Thanks!-I am far from a perfectionist, but this helps-I'm about to put out a CD---a whopping 75 copies--and have gone back and forth about completing it because of the numerous rough spots ...but it is me...and I am going to do it-warts and all
Good advice! So hard to do sometimes. Thanks for sharing!
When I wasn’t sure if a song was good enough, a wise friend gently told me I needed to learn how to “get out of my own way.” I’ve never forgotten that - it’s true, & exactly what you are talking about here. In music & in life, the only thing keeping us from soaring is what’s inside our own heads...
Terrific advice, Lewin
What's with the description box? 🤷🏼♀️ An "old guy"? C'mon, I don't see one!! But so much wisdom! Thanks for the stories, Lewin! The things you say are so true! It's always better done, than perfect. And "perfect" doesn't exist at all! I wish I could've said, I'm not guilty of perfectionism, but I can't. I think, that not only musicians, people in general, tend to doubt and underestimate themselves, and look around to find who's better. But all of us should simply enjoy "our thing", trust the process, and be happy for others, when they are doing something good and succeed!
Have a great weekend! I can't wait to hear a brand new #MusicMonday song! You've got me addicted, so I'm excited there with you! 🙌☺️
It's not songwriting, but I've noticed myself writing you an awfully long comment every time. I hope you don't mind! 😄
I most definitely do NOT mind and in fact I do sit here wondering when your comment will pop up. :D
@@GaragebandandBeyond Really? I couldn't even imagine, that you were waiting for my comment. In fact I was waiting for your "Friday video"! 😄
you are awesome …i will love to see some of your live tours … were can we foud them?

Dude, that music in the background... what kind of commercial am I watching? I hate it
I actually thought it was really funny to put it under this! I’m sorry that you feel so strongly about it.
@@GaragebandandBeyond it's all good, I just feel like I'm being brainwashed when I hear that music
Samantha de Regules 😂🤣😂🤣 sorry!!
